Methods/Sample Response Rates: For all Adams County schools surveyed 22,284 students completed the ACYI Student Survey. Portions
of some schools administered the Healthy Kids Colorado Survey (HKCS) instead of the ACYI survey . Enrollment for
schools/classrooms that were part of the Adams County sample was 28,316, for an overall response rate of 79%. A high
response rate is preferred in survey research in order to achieve adequate power to demonstrate changes from one year
to the next and to ensure that the sample that took part in the survey is representative of the larger population that was
surveyed (i.e., all students). Whether differences exist between those students who responded to the survey compared
to those who did not is not known. Therefore, care must be taken in generalizing the results to the entire school
population when response rates are lower than 70 to 75%.
Survey Sample Characteristics: The gender distribution of the students surveyed was 49% male and 51% female.
The following tables present, in more detail, the demographic makeup of the students who responded to the survey.
Table 1 represents the number and proportion of students who completed the survey for middle/high schools in each
district.

A Closer Look: Substance use factors, and Adult Support
Reported use (in the past 30 days) increases drastically among older students.
The increase is especially large between 8th and 9th grade as students transition to high school; along with a pronounced increase between 7th and 8th grade.
Alcohol use and Binge drinking increase steadily throughout high school
Marijuana use is similar between 9th/10th graders, and then increases among 11th/12th graders
The Adams County Students Survey asks whether students have at least one supportive and trusted adult:
1. At home 2. At their school 3. Outside of home/school

Correlations between Survey data and Academic Success:
Caring Relationships and Graduation
We see higher rates of on-time graduation in Adams County high schools with a larger proportion of students having a caring adult at home, at school, and outside of home or school.
(In the graph, right, each Adams County high school is represented by a point, according to its % of students reporting support in all three locations, and it's 2012/13 Graduation rate)
Social & Emotional Well-Being and CSAP/ TCAP Math Proficiency The Student Survey asks students a set of questions testing "non-cognitive factors" - Social and emotional characteristics that are not measured by academic performance.
Measured using the "Personal Strengths Inventory" (PSI), these questions address three sub-topics including:
Adams county students' responses to these questions are a very good predictor of academic success
Schools with higher average PSI scores (positive numbers) tend to have much higher proportions of students who score proficient in math
PSI score of 0 is average, and positive numbers reflect higher social/emotional competency).
2012/13 Math Proficiency rates for each school, as reported by the Colorado Dept. of Education
Emotion Awareness and Regulation:
• I know what makes me happy.
• I know what makes me sad.
• I am able to tell when other people are upset.
• I can understand another person's way of thinking.
• I know when my mood is changing.
• I can tell what other people are feeling.
Self-Efficacy, Persistence (“Grit”)
• I believe I will succeed in everything I do.
• I have high expectations and standards for success.
• I set goals and plan how to reach those goals.
• I find it easy to try again when I fail.
• I know how to deal with stress.
Social skills/confidence:
• I find it easy to make friends.
• I know how to be accepted in a group.
• I work well in a group.
• I get along well with other people.

1. The survey was administered in the fall of 2013, before Colorado Amendment 64 (legalizing recreational marijuana use) officially took effect. 2. Because the 2013 survey asked separate questions for sub-classes of prescription drugs, results are not directly comparable to previous years
