A&D 590 Cognition for Interaction Design

Under curriculum approval process as A&D532 Cognition in Design

Course Summary

This course focuses on understanding cognitive issues and theories in design. Students are exposed to different cognitive models and phases while they are designing interactive systems. They will develop the cognitive perspective, analyze user experience, and develop an interaction design.

Course Outline

Learning Outcomes

• Explain and evaluate design decisions in terms of elementary cognitive theories .

• Understand key differences between traditional and emerging models of cognition and the development of these models.

• Learn about specific human strengths and weaknesses in terms of perception, memory, learning, and cognition and how to use this information to optimally design the interface/interaction to leverage this specific human potential.

• Apply current models of individual and group cognition to the design of user interaction.

• Ultimately, analyze, critically evaluate, and improve our interaction with artifacts from the human perspective.

Evaluation Structure• In class contribution and discussion (20%)Each student has two opportunities (10% each) to add content to our weekly lectures. Every week, Cheryl haslisted the required and extended reading materials online. You are encouraged to search for more relatedinformation to enrich our content. If it is your turn, please prepare slides (as many as you need) and get ready totalk for 10 minutes after Cheryl’s lecture. Your sequence and topics will be assigned in the very first class.

• Conference or competition submission (10%)Make ONE submission to one of the following events:o Create 11 Interaction Design Conference: http://www.dexigner.com/news/21893Deadline: February 28, 2011o 8th ACM Conference on Creativity & Cognition: http://dilab.gatech.edu/ccc/Deadline: March 25, 2011o Or, discuss with Cheryl and suggest an event (http://www.dexigner.com/design‐competitions)

• Whirlpool washer and dryer interaction design (70%)Topic: How the washer and dryer teach us to do the laundry properly?You are invited to design the newest generation of washer and dryer for Whirlpool. In order to accomplish the task,firstly you are expected to explore and understand the current mental models of laundry. There are several differentuser groups you should consider: for example, seniors or patients with chronic conditions, young colleague students,or house wives of big families. What are their laundry habits and what do they need? Furthermore, there are manycontemporary issues you should take into consideration: for example, new high‐tech fabric types, new kinds ofdetergent and bleach, ecological consideration, and modern wireless technologies. While learning cognitive designprinciples in the course, you will research on users and their tasks in teams, explore representational andtechnological opportunities, brainstorm more than five design ideas, select ideas from cognitive perspective,prototype with digital media, and obtain user feedbacks through evaluation.
