Lake Orion- Dragon on theLake is six years old and thepopular summer community

festival continues to grow.

“The event began as afundraiser for the 30thanniversary for the Orion ArtCenter,” says LaurenDinneweth, Director of theOrion Art Center, theorganization that producesthe event. “It had a few crafts,

inflatables and the chalk artcontest.”

Now there’s a full art faircalled Lakeside Living whichanchors the festival indowntown Lake Orion.National and local artists willsell and showcase their worknear Flint and Broadway. The

fair also features a stage forartists to demonstrate theirwork.

Other features: the Fridaynight 5K Run to benefit HelpKids Succeed, whichprovides clothing, suppliesand other essentials tochildren in need. The unique

evening run is organized bythe Lake Orion UnitedMethodist Church andsponsored by CrittentonHospital.

Another addition to the Fridaynight lineup is a CharityCasino to be held near thefestival’s Dragon Pub, hosted

in partnership with the LakeOrion Knights of Columbus.The evening will includegames like Black Jack,Roulette, and Texas Hold ‘em.The Casino takes place 7-11:30pm Friday night.

The festival is in a celebrationof art, music and Lake Orion’scentury old legend of thedragon. An estimated 15,000people attended Dragon onthe Lake last year.

A main feature of the event isthe dragon boat races. Thisyear 30 teams race againsteach other, including teams ofcancer survivors. There’s alsoa special flower ceremony forthose touched by cancer.

Dragon boat racing is one ofthe fastest growing watersports in the world. Twenty

people join together in a 40-foot boat, all paddlingtogether, while a drummerkeeps the pace.

The festival includes 3 stagesof entertainment- a mainstage in the Dragon Pub, theArt Stage, and a stage in theKidz Zone near the Orion ArtCenter. On Saturday night, the

main stage features theDetroit based Square Pegz foran 80’s music extravaganza.

Artists can also compete inthe Chalk Art Challenge inthe streets of downtown. Thecontest offers $500 in prizes.And there’s the Baby DragonRace in Paint Creek to endthe festival. The baby
