Every good relationship
requires commitment E&J Solutions have been actively involved in lobbying of the
government as the support for renewables in the shape of FiT
and RHI continue to evolve. There have been 10 different
consultations across the two schemes in the last 2 years, with
4 of 5 RHI consultations still with the Government awaiting their
response (all except one of these were due to report before
Christmas 2012).
With this level of uncertainty regarding the state support for
renewables, it is no surprise that the AD industry continues to
struggle to attract support from the banks and other investors.
Furthermore, memories of the hiatus following sudden changes
to the solar PV FiT remain strong, and delays in government
commitment make many wary of taking the plunge.
In the update to the UK Renewable Energy Roadmap
published by DECC on 27th December 2012, commitment has
been given to
...complete implementation of the AD Strategy and Action Plan by
summer 2013…….bring forward the best approach to tackling RHI
tariff reductions to provide greater financial certainty and investor
confidence....by April 2013…...plans to publish the Government
Response (to RHI: ‘Providing Certainty and Improving Performance’
consultation which proposed a preliminary accreditation) in winter
2012/13…...Strategic framework for heat: Publish a heat policy
options paper in early 2013.
We are continuing to lobby government, in co-ordination with
our trade bodies, in order to get some clarity on the
governments intentions, and will continue to keep our clients
and contacts informed as information is released.
JANUARY 2013 EDITION E&J Solutions firstly want to wish all our clients and contacts a
Happy New Year. Just over a week into January and the sun
is shining—long may it continue. On that bright note—
welcome to our first update of 2013
E&J Solutions Ltd specialises in supporting the development of AD facilities throughout the UK from our office in the
Welsh Marches.
We are not a technology provider but develop the design based on client requirements and we work with our clients
from the feasibility stage, through commissioning support, to post commissioning training and optimisation to ensure
that the AD plant designed reflects the clients individual circumstances and operates efficiently.

Small Scale Opportunities Further to our update last month, E&J Solutions have now been approached by two further Anaerobic Digestion
companies looking to expand their number of installations. Again they are principally looking for dairy farmers,
although unlike the company we reported last month, these are a little more open to alternative feedstocks. Once
again the supplier will finance the project and keep the Feed in Tariff and/or Renewable Heat Incentive. The farmer
will be paid for the crops / plant operation and will get free or reduced cost heat and electricity.
E&J Solutions believe this finance model could release projects which cannot otherwise secure funding, and having
multiple offerings (and hence competition) can only be good for getting the best deal for the prospective farm
clients. We are continuing discussion with each, to determine which scenarios would be best for each of them, but
would welcome discussions with anyone thinking this might be of interest. If you would like more details, or know
someone who may be applicable, then please let us know.
Renewables Outputs continue to grow Energy Trends and Quarterly Energy Prices were published on the 27 December 2012 by the Department of Energy
and Climate Change. Contained within was the latest report on the production of energy by renewable sources,
with renewables’ share of electricity generation increased to 11.7% from the 9.1% share in the third quarter of
2011. In Scotland, over 26% of all electricity generated is now from renewable sources.
Offshore wind generation increased by 54%, whilst onshore wind generation also increased (by 38%). Solar PV
increased 452% year on year as a continuing result of last autumn’s surge in domestic installations. AD showed a
27% increase as more capacity is commissioned, although the year on year growth is starting to slow. Overall
renewable generation was up 25% compared to the same quarter in 2011.
