INTRODUCTION This assignment requires students to design a new process application that involves mixing a liquid with two dry materials to make a polymer additive that is used in making rubber product. This application will involve a series of three 1000 gallons tank that will hold raw materials. The tank that holds the liquid is heated with steam jacket. The temperature sensor is needed to maintain the liquid in desired temperature. A mixing tank is mounted on a rail and it moved under each tank to receive its 200 pounds of the dry ingredient and 100 gallons of the liquid ingredient that will be mixed together to form the polymer additive. The mixing tank must stop at exactly the correct position precisely below each tank so that it can receive the proper amount of each ingredient. The job is to research the actuator needed for this system and recommend which ones you would use and explain the detail of its characteristic. SELECTION OF ACTUATOR

1. VALVE FOR DRY MATERIAL

There are 2 valves that are placed for both tank (dry material).Pinch valve was chosen as the suitable valve which is the location are inlet (for the dry material to flow in) and outlet (for the dry material to flow out to the mixing tank).

PINCH VALVE

Ideal solutions where shut-off and control applications involve abrasive or corrosive slurries, powders or coarse substances.

With enclosed, open, sealed and general line valve bodies.  PVE (enclosed body) and PV (open body) pinch valves are ideal for

demanding flow control and shut-off applications.

OPERATING PRINCIPLE

In the open position, valves are at full bore with no flow restrictions. During closing, two pinch bars squeeze the sleeve shut on the centerline.

Benefits:

Full bore structure with 100 % tight shut-off. The inside sleeve is the only part in contact with the process medium. Self-cleaning, valves provide seal tight shut-off even if solids have built up on the

sleeve wall. When compressed, any crystallized particles flake off the sleeve surface.

2. VALVE FOR LIQUID

For liquid filling process we use two ball valve at different position. Valve 1 is place

at the inlet of the liquid and the valve 2 place at the outlet of the liquid. We choose the

ball valve compare to the other valves because it is easier to handle which is can

shutoff or open in the limited time. Besides that this ball valve can be use in the harsh

condition and at high temperature.

Ball valves are designed with a ball inside the valve.  The ball has a hole through the

middle so that when the hole is in line with both ends of the valve, flow will occur.  

When the valve is closed by turning the ball 90 degrees, the hole is perpendicular to

the ends of the valve, and therefore flow is blocked.  Ball valves are very durable and

usually have excellent shutoff even after years of use.  They are generally preferred

over globe valves in shutoff applications.  The main limitation for ball valves is

proportional control because of the large amount of flow that the ball allows.

3. VALVE FOR STEAM PRESSURE

For steam inlet valve, one of the valves that are suitable to be use is the

double seated globe valve. This valve is able to operate with steam of up to

180 oC. This valve can operate with water, air, and also steam. This valve is

easy serviceability and has low price due to replaceable soft seal and also

safe relief of the actuator spring without having to use spring clamping device.

For the principle of operation of this valve, the process medium flows through

the valve in the direction indicated by the narrow in the flow-to-open direction.

The valve plug position determines the cross-sectional area between the seat

and the plug.

For safety purposes, this valve will have its own fail-safe position. So, this

valve have a fail-close function or in other word air-to-open. The valve is close

upon air supply failure to ensure safety of the workplace.

4. MOTOR FOR MIXING TANK

Motor used in mixing tank is D-050 Portable Mixer by Sharpe mixers. It power is 0.33 Horsepower motor, 110/220 Volt, single-phase. The motor produce 1750 rpm. The high speed of the impellers create localized high-velocity eddies (high shear) where it necessary for many application such as dispersing and dissolving dry powder into solution.

The motor mixer also have some protection for eliminate corrosion and prevent marring the mixer shaft. The main reason D-050 mixer being choose is because of it easy to mount on tank, that mixer is portable and easy to re-clamp at flange of the tank.

5. MOTOR FOR CONVEYOR

For the conveyor motor,AC Gear Motor (IP65 rated) made by Brother is used. It offer superior resistance to water ingress and harsh chemicals used. These motor also offer high torque with greater energy saving. It gearmotors feature hardened steel hypoid gear that can transfer higher loads at greater speeds due to the gradual engagement of the teeth and smooth transfer of the load.

IP65 washdown AC gear motors offer superior resistance to water ingress and harsh environments used in food processing plants.

Longer Life

Compared to a spur gear of approximately the same pitch diameter, Helical gears can transfer high loads at greater speeds. This is due to the gradual engagement of the teeth and smooth transfer of the load.

Maintenance Free

High-quality synthetic grease is used in all gearboxes. They are filled at the factory and do not require maintenance filling or level checks. This saves valuable time at set up and eliminates concern for costly oil disposal required by the EPA.

High Durability Finish

Electrocoat paint is standard for these AC gear motors and provides higher durability and superior resistance vs. traditional painting or powder coat finishes and can also be considered for harsher environments.
