2

Brother Doyle Ratterlee will be in service with

us on August 8, 9, 10 -- Wed, Thurs, Friday

to preach and to worship with us.

3

The seven sons of Sceva tried to

cast out a demon.

The demon made the possessed

man supernaturally strong.

in the Name of Jesus who Paul preaches

Acts 19:15 And the evil spirit answered and said, Jesus

I know, and Paul I know; but who are ye? 16 And

the man in whom the evil spirit was leaped on

them, and overcame them, and prevailed against

them, so that they fled out of that house naked and

wounded.

4

17 And this was known to all the Jews and Greeks

also dwelling at Ephesus; and fear fell on them

all, and the Name of the Lord Jesus was magnified.

Just as Paul's ministry was confirmed

by the Lord with miracles,

These unbelieving Jews were discredited when

they tried and failed to do the same miracles.

5

18 And many that believed came, and

confessed, and shewed their deeds.

No one can confess his sins and

try to hide them at the same time.

To overcome the power of any sin over you,

Confess it and forsake it.

6

19 Many of them also which used curious arts

brought their books together, and burned them

before all men: and they counted the price of

them, and found it fifty thousand pieces of silver.

These were works worthy of repentance.

The books would have been a temptation to them to

return to sorcery, so they burned them.

They showed that they had turned from sorcery.

7

19b they counted the price of them, and found it

fifty thousand pieces of silver.

Sometimes doing the right thing is expensive.

There is a cost to whole-heartedly serving God.

Luke 14 28-30 For which of you, intending to build

a tower, sitteth not down first, and counteth the

cost, whether he have sufficient to finish it? Lest

haply, after he hath laid the foundation, and is not

able to finish it, all that behold it begin to mock

him, saying, This man began to build, and was not

able to finish.

8

Luke 14 31 Or what king, going to make war

against another king, sitteth not down first, and

consulteth whether he be able with ten thousand to

meet him that cometh against him with twenty

thousand? 32 Or else, while the other is yet a great

way off, he sendeth an ambassage, and desireth

conditions of peace. 33

So likewise, whosoever he be of

you that forsaketh not all that he

hath, he cannot be My disciple.

9

Matthew 16 24-25 Then said Jesus unto His disciples, If

any man will come after Me, let him deny himself, and

take up his cross, and follow Me. For whosoever will

save his life shall lose it: and whosoever will lose his

life for My sake shall find it.

To lose one's life may mean death, but * it may

also mean to give up our plans and ambitions for

this life and submit our will to God's Will.

What are you willing to give up to

do the Will of God?

10

20 So mightily grew the Word of God and prevailed.

When the church is

cleansed, the Word of God

grows. If we desire to be in earnest in the great work of

salvation, every pursuit and enjoyment must be

given up which hinders the effect of the Gospel

upon the mind, or loosens its hold upon the heart.Matthew Henry Concise Bible Commentary

11

What most hinders you in your walk with God?

Hebrews 12 1 Wherefore seeing we also are

compassed about with so great a cloud of

witnesses, let us lay aside every weight, and the sin

which doth so easily beset us, and let us run with

patience the race that is set before us,

It's not only the sinful things that hinder us.

12

To work is a good thing, but a

workaholic may neglect his

spiritual life.

To watch TV is not a sin, but

too much can become a

hindrance to our spiritual life.

Lay aside every weight -- every hindrance --

That you may freely and enthusiastically

serve God.
