At the fag-end of the semester, while running in a busy schedule, we started to seek a

time slot for our motivational visit which our students are fervently waiting. We selected

first week of April to make no interrupt to regular classes. For getting finest

transportation, food and accommodation to the participants, and also to be well-timed,

we arranged an experienced personality, Mr. Prejish from Meridian Holidays,

Malappuram.

03rd April, 2017

With great expectations, the team departed our home institution on the 3rd of April at

3:15 pm to visit four reputed institutions of Chennai. The journey from the college at

Manjeri to Chennai was quite long. The team made the voyage funny, joyful, and colorful.

We had a tea and biscuits in the evening. To get the experience of sharing and mixing

different savor, team members were already packed their dinner from their home. We

took a short break from travel to have dinner. Students made the night a little bit

sleepless. After a long journey we reached the destination early morning on next day, a

little bit out of scheduled time.

04th April, 2017

We were our lodging at Shivasunder Villa service apartments, near Injambackam,

Chennai. It was finest in terms of its services and is economical with pleasant ambiance.

After check-in to the apartments, busy morning routines, we had a nice, fast breakfast.

We began with the sojourn to Madras Christian College, Thambaram, which was our

first institution to be visited. The institution is famous for developing students with a

fine caliber and moral fiber. Built during the time of British rule in India, the college

stands imperial and regal. Creeping in the unavoidable, usual traffic jam in the city, we

reached there at around 10 o’ clock. We were warmly welcomed to the campus by

students and staff. With prior communication, the principal Dr. R. W. Alexander

Jesudasan, who was away on official purpose, allotted Prof. Arun kumar of Department

of English to helping us to visit the campus.

Prof. Arun led us to the Counsel room where we had a formal interactive session with

Mr. C. Sundaraj, the Principal in-charge of the college. At the counsel room we were

greeted with huge life-like portraits of college visionaries. Mr. C Sundaraj briefed with

the history of the college and explained about academic and co-curricular activities in

the campus.

During interaction with Vice-Principal of MCC

Prof. Arun led us for a campus tour. We visited various departments and laboratories

also. The Chemistry and Physics laboratories, renovated by former student Indra K

Nooyi, were very worthy to watch. Students were very astonished to watch these. Some

of the science students from our team took more time to interact with students in the

lab. Also visited the well-spaced auditorium and sports stadium; which were also

remarkable.

Next visit was to college hostels. There were 6 hostels inside the campus, 3 each for girls

and boys. We were let to visit one among the girl’s hostels, namely, Martin Hall. Prof.

Arun arranged an inmate of the Hall to give us a brief explanation on their student

accommodation system. Highly spirited and talkative, Ms. Anjali, final year B.Com.

student and Welfare Secretary of the Hall guided the students and explained each and

every aspects of their Hall system. Our students were highly enthusiastic and felt free to

interact with the inmates. The warden, Ms. Merlin, received us with a smiling face and

described the events conducted in the Hall. Then we took an express visit to another Hall

named Barnes.

Chatting with Ms. Anjali at Martin Hall

We them moved forward to visit the Miller Memorial Library. The librarian, Dr. P

Yesudoss was very willing to show us the facilities in the library. He explained each and

every key features and characteristics of that library. Team members were permitted to

enter the reference section and to interact with other staffs in the library. From there

Jerome James, final year BCA student joined us. He was very pleasant to talk about his

institution.

Prof. Arun took us next to the Center for Media Studies. Where Prof. B Manikandan took

a hand to help us, very briefly he presented about his department’s activities. We were

taken to the Viewing theatre where shown us a video presentation which took a peep to

the history of the institution. Then we were shown the solar panel built in the roof of a

building. It was a 500KW panel and it has been able to met 25% of electricity needs of

the college.

Our team with Prof. Arun in front of Miller Memorial Library

Since time was running out we had to leave the college premises. However Madras

Christian College, with its wonderful faculty members left a lingering effect on the

students and teachers of the team, motivating and probing the team to move further,

beyond limits.

Our next station was prominent Loyola College. Loyola College, Chennai is an

autonomous Jesuit college of the University of Madras. We reached there at around 3:30

in the evening. The principal was out of station after long time to waiting us. The

Superintendent, Mr. Krishnan received us with a hearty welcome even if it was one and

half hours beyond the scheduled time. He allowed us to visit their departments as well as

labs. We quickly split up the students into groups and allowed them to visit needed

departments and labs; also, declared a time to rejoin.

In the glory of the statue of Saint Ignatius of Loyola

The ambiance of the campus was extremely fabulous. The greenery and the calm-quiet

nature of the campus, inside a city like Chennai, were really dazing. The huge and

beautiful statue of Saint Ignatius of Loyola, in front of the main building, spreads its glory

and greets to everyone. The famous ‘Christ the King’ Church is located inside the campus.

The Gothic style architecture – the pointed arches, the ribbed vaults, rose windows,

three-aisle naves and the flying buttresses out-stands it from the other churches in

Chennai. The spire of the building reaches to an incredible height of 157 feet from the

ground.

Loyola has its own health centre inside the campus. Students of evening courses were

busy with their classes; however, they were ready to interact with our students. A group

of students visited the Chemistry lab, going some research activities there.

Time flew a little bit fast. It was 05:30 pm, the minute to get together. Students were

gathered beneath a tree near entrance. All were very happy and amazed. I put them

another surprise that we going to spend our twilight at Marina beach, which was not

already informed them. They all leapt with delight.

We had already decided to re-gather near our vehicle by abound 7:15 pm. After getting

all guys, with unhappy to leave the beach, we return back to our apartments. Having a

nice dinner there, we fell to our bed for an early good-morning on text day.

05th April, 2017

The day started quite early. Early in the morning, we had to wake up and get ready; we

were going to watch the sun rise at the beach. Our apartment was very close to the

Golden Beach. We had around 2 or 3 minutes to walk to the beach. The students were

playing Kabady with the tides. They stood hand in hand to see the sun rise. The horizon

was ruddy. Slowly, the morning red ball rose upward. We walked along the sandy shore

and played games before taking back to the apartment.

Tamil Nadu Dr. Ambedkar Law University

After refreshment and breakfast, the team boarded the bus, with packed luggage. We

were going to visit The Tamilnadu Dr. Ambedkar Law University.

We reached the college past 10 am and were ushered in by the security staff. Huge

blocks of various departments seemed to welcome the team. We were received by the

staff and comfortably seated us in the Seminar hall. Since there was another conference

taking place simultaneously in the college, we were told, it would take Prof. Dr. D Gopal,

HoD, Department of Environmental Law & Legal Order (we were contacted him already

for the permission for visit) a bit more time to relieve himself.

The team decided to explore the college taking use of the lapse in time. Our first stop was

the library. Signing in names one by one, in the register, we entered the library. The

library was quiet and full.

In front of the library at Tamil Nadu Dr. Ambedkar Law University

We strolled around the campus before calling for an interaction with Prof. Dr. D Gopal.

After get back in the seminar hall, Dr. D Gopal gave a brief explanation about the

University and also about the curricular and co-curricular events conducted in the

campus. Then he asked about our institution and also about the Walk With a Scholar

programme. He appreciated our Government for taking such an initiative for motivating

and inspiring students. He also answered the queries of team members and also invited

us to be a part of the conference that was running there. As we had an appointment with

IIT Madras at afternoon, thankfully, we refused the invitation.

Interaction with Prof. Dr. D Gopal, Director of PG Programmes, TNDALU

We were allowed to have our lunch inside the campus. After that we said good-bye to

Tamilnadu Dr. Ambedkar Law University.

Our next destination was IIT Madras. We reached the IIT campus at 1:45 pm. The

Communication Office of the institute had assigned a volunteer to guide us during the

visit. Our guide, Miss. Mamatha, sixth semester BTech. Aerospace engineering student

was waiting for us in front of the administrative Block.

We were first bring in to the IIT Heritage Centre were names of those iconic men who

played a great role in making IIT a reality was engraved in golden. Short video discussing

the history of IIT, major visionaries and achievements was played to our inspiration and

awe. This was very helpful to understand the past years of IIT and how much it was

worked hard to realize such a dream.

Mamatha then took us to the CFI. Centre for Innovation (CFI) is a ‘Student Lab’ at IIT

Madras. It is set in the building that houses the Central Workshop, right in the middle of

the academic zone in the beautiful IIT Madras Campus. A great workspace, a

comprehensive inventory, ample guidance from faculty & senior-students and the zeal

and passion of the CFI team make CFI a gifted asset for IIT Madras students. And over

time, CFI has successfully evolved into a hub which encourages thinking and provokes

students to generate novel ideas making it truly the “centre” for innovation.

Mr. Raghav from second year BTech electrical engineering and Mr. Arvind from second

year BTech Chemical Engineering explained the innovative projects undergone there.

There were a lot of innovative projects there under making. For instance the students

showed us a plan of houses that could be folded and used for safety in areas prone to

cyclones.

Chat with Mr. Arvind and Mr. Raghav at CFI

Mamatha next led us to the facilities of IIT Madras. The central library, with a lot of

books was really interesting; but we weren’t permitted to enter because of security

reasons. We also visited the student residences, named with famous river names in India

like Mandakini, Pampa, Mahanadi, etc. The open theatre in the campus was very huge, is

used to show the newly released movies to make the students entertained. We also

visited the Swimming pool and Auditorium. There were so many deer and monkeys

crossing the path. Students were trying to take selfie with them, but they were running

out to hide themselves from strangers.

The students of IIT are permitted to use bicycles only to travel from one place to another

inside the campus, to reduce the pollution, another eco-friendly culture of the institution.

Mamatha showed us the famous Himalaya Mess, which offers students a variety of South

Indian and North Indian dishes on need. We walked straight to the sports stadium. It

was much facilitated and well maintained. The track was very set up. Some of our team

members including Faizal sir took a hand to run a round in the track; while rest were

taking rest and viewing the play from gallery.

We took short refreshment from a coffee shop inside the campus. We boarded bus at

5:45 pm with a good bye to Mamatha for giving us her valuable support.

There had feedback session in the return journey; all were very eager to talk about. Most

of them were first time in such an institutional visit. After dinner on the way, we had a

movie played.
