Good Governance and Human Rights

A) Movement to advance women’s right & gender equality

The unequal rights of men and women are the barrier for entire development. The torture of women and the subordination of women is the huge barrier for equity and development. Work for Human and Rural Development (WHRD) has been implementing this program. This program is implemented under this program through various activities on social issues by forming gender change activists, women activists from grass-root level women, Student volunteer group from secondary level and Students facilitators group from higher secondary level and by improving their skills.

Objectives- a) Decreasing the rate early marriage. b) Decreasing the rate of family torture. c) Decreasing the rate of sexual harassment in organization level. d) Increasing the presence of women in the process of decision making in politics.

B) Establishing and Protection of the Rights of Vegetable Producing Farmers

Bangladesh is an agro-based country. Almost 85% people of this country are engaged in agriculture either directly or indirectly. Agriculture is the main economic sector due to the availability of cultivation worthy land, availability of labor, own local market etc. But the farmers of our country is neglected, cheated and deprived in various ways. The agriculture sector is under threat despite the availability of scope for development. The farmers are enslaved to the agriculture based local and foreign marketing companies of fertilizer, seeds and pesticides. Work for Human and Rural Development (WHRD) is implementing this program the own initiatives. To preserve the right of the farmers, to achieve the right of the farmers, and to protect the status of the farmers.

Objectives - a) Establishing the Good governance in Government organization through establishing transparency. b) Ensuring economic and livelihood safety by establishing the access to Government service and technology. C) Promoting Pro-Poor Policy Reforms and Public Services for All

No program can play fruitful role for the development of the people by keeping the ordinary people out of the development process. Bangladesh government had already made principles and taken programs, and implemented programs to reduce poverty, hunger, inequity, depravedness, unemployment and illiteracy and poverty elimination. But no program can play an effective role for the entire development. For this reason, there is a need of increasing public participation in the development process and capacity building for the grass-root level people. In order to achieve this goal, Work for Human and Rural Development (WHRD) will be implementing campaign program in national and grass-root level. Work for Human and Rural Development (WHRD) is implementing the program – “Promoting Pro-Poor Policy Reforms and Public Services for All the own initiatives.

Objectives-

a) Creating accountability on government expenditure in the public service sector and establishing economic justice through creating consciousness and skill of active social civil society on participatory budget. b) Increasing the accountability of Government for this by transforming essential service sector, especially health and education sector as the basic need. c) Making awareness among the strategy maker to submerge the climate change into development program. And improving the capability of civil society so that the pressure is created on Government to cancel foreign debt. d) Strengthening the campaign program in order to disburse 0.7% fund of the GDP of the developed and rich countries. e) Involving with the international citizen movement in order to collect the fund of climate change. f) Increasing the organizational capability of Work for Human and Rural Development (WHRD) to evolve as the Pressure group from civil society.

D) Strengthening Local Governance through Participatory & Responsive Public Service Project:

It is necessary to provide autonomy and strengthen local government to ensure good governance in all cases. The local government of Bangladesh seems to be potential, but this organization is ineffective in reality despite the initiatives taken by the government to strengthen local government and effort of implementation. This is very important to make awareness in local areas by eliminating the birth time weakness of local Government and by making the government service related organization more accountable and effective.

The main feature of this program is to make the better quality service in local government service related organization by keeping an eye on the demand of people through forming and activating the local government more accountable and people oriented.

Objectives- a) Improving the quality of Government services through the improvement of knowledge and skill of Union Parishad. b) Improving the transparency, accountability, and effectiveness of the representative of local government through man to man effective contact with people, Union Parishad, local civil society and the government employees. c) Establishing connection in small and large scale and strengthening the policy advocacy in local and national level regarding good governance locally in local areas.

E) Legal Aid Program:

The act of torture against women and children, murder, rape, dowry and divorce is happening on regular basis also in Dhaka like other district of Bangladesh. The main victims of this situation are mainly women and children of distress family. Most of them cannot take legal aid due to the torture, pressure in the society and family, harassment, ignorance about law, and scarcity of money. In this situation, Work For Human and Rural Development (WHRD) has been supporting legal aid to the women and children victims from the very beginning.

a) Reducing the ratio of women and children victims from the society through the assistance of legal aid and counseling.

F) Waste Smart Management

This topic focuses on the status of not only solid waste but also kitchen waste generation, waste management system and waste management problems in Bangladesh. All waste generation is in increasing trend with the growth of urban population. The country is generating about 8000 tons of solid waste each day from the six major cities (Dhaka, Chittagong, Khulna, Rajshahi, Barisal and Sylhet), of which Dhaka city alone is contributing about 70%. Waste management system is not well organized. Efforts are underway to improve the system of waste collection, transportation, recycling, incineration and land filling. Lack of regulations/standard for waste disposal, landfill & use, lack of awareness,

Page 7: Activities of WHRD · * Department of Dhaka city corporation (North) as a colleague Enterprise, Government of Bangladesh No. 05 -34295, dated 24.12.2015 Department of co-operative

improper choice of technology and inadequate financial support are the major constraints for waste management in Bangladesh.

The term waste is an unavoidable by product of human activities Economic development, urbanization and improving living standards in cities, have led to an increase in the quantity

and complexity of generated waste. Rapid urbanization and population growth

are largely responsible for increasing rate of waste generation in Bangladesh. This is a big threat to the environment and public health. Due to lack of motivation, awareness, proper selection of technology and adequate financial support, a considerable portion of wastes, 40-60%, are not properly stored, collected or disposed in the designated places for ultimate disposal. As a result, this waste creates environmental problems. The solid waste has four components: recycling, composting, land filling and waste to energy (WTE) via incineration. In low-income countries like Bangladesh, much inorganic waste (such as plastic, metal, glass, etc.) is partially recycled by mainly informal sectors, while Work for Human and Rural Development (WHRD) take the lead in composting of organic portion in limited scale and the recycling sector. Nevertheless, much of the organic portion as well as other, value-less waste remains a major problem. This often constitutes more than half by weight of the total waste generated and requires costly removal and disposal are largely responsible for increasing rate of waste generation in Bangladesh.

Hence, this study attempts to summaries the waste generation status, waste management system and waste management technology, existing legal framework related to waste management and problem associated waste management to ensure environmental sustainability.

WHRD Education Program

Basic education programs can assist people who are migrants or people who have never received

a school diploma. These programs are put in place to help adults prepare for postsecondary

education and a career to follow. Some specific programs and formats will be discussed.

Adult basic education can encompass many different skills, from improving literacy levels to

passing the Bangladesh citizenship exam. Typically these programs are designed to help adults

transition to postsecondary education for the purpose of beginning a career that requires such an

education. Adult basic education programs and classes can cover the following topics:

High School Diploma Equivalency:

Many basic adult education programs base coursework on education taught from first through

twelfth grade in a traditional school. Some high school equivalency programs (HSEPs) are for

individuals that are 16 or older and not in school. With these programs, coursework generally

includes basic literacy courses for non-readers or readers with limited skills, such as non-native

English speakers, social studies, English, mathematics, and science.

English as a Second Language

English as a second language programs, better known as ESL courses, are for individuals whose

primary language isn't English. These courses teach Basic English literacy skills as well as

Bangladeshi customs and traditions.

GED Preparation:

Many community and technical colleges offer GED preparation through their basic adult

education departments. These classes can cover all four subjects of the 2014 GED exam:

language arts, mathematics, science, and social studies. These programs also include the chance

to take full-length practice tests, which assess which areas need improvement and which areas

are mastered. Applicants must be 17 years old or older to be eligible for such programs.

Family Literacy:

Family literacy is best defined as the degree in which literacy development is encouraged and

built upon within the home environment of the youth. Family literacy programs focus on

ensuring that multiple members within a household are building their literacy skills. Certain

programs are for parents who lack Basic English skills, while others are for specific areas of

proficiency with language and computer literacy.

Citizenship Exam Preparation:

Citizenship exam preparation programs provide students with the knowledge and skills necessary

to take the Bangladesh Citizenship and Immigration Services citizenship examination. Such

classes also teach English as a second language (ESL), so that a student can pass the Immigration

and Naturalization Service (INS) interview. Students learn about the laws of the land and the

responsibilities involved in citizenship. The classes also help immigrants to access important

resources.

Online Options:

Some schools offer GED training and other adult basic education online. Classes in reading,

writing, and mathematics can often be taken online; students with lower than ninth-grade reading

or math skills are often given remote assignments to help them reach this level. Students must

pass a placement exam upon application to the program. Applicants need to have strong

computer and keyboarding skills, access to the Internet, and several hours per week to devote to

coursework. These online programs may be ideal for people with disabilities or mobility issues.

Basic adult education programs are vital tools for people who do not speak English as a second

language or are attempting to become Bangladeshi citizens. Some of these programs, such as

GED programs, are helpful to individuals who want to receive a high school diploma. Some

programs are available online.

Street Child Education:

From rural areas that have never had a school, to classrooms that have been destroyed because of

disaster or conflict, millions of children are unable to go to school across the world today simply

because there are no schools for them to go to.

For children who are in school, many schools are not good enough quality with hundreds of

students per classroom, a lack of toilets, sanitary facilities, capable teachers or adequate learning

materials.

Parental and community attitudes can often also hold back children's education, especially for

girls from late primary-school age and upwards, stopping them from going to school or making

them earn a living for the family instead of getting an education.

We work with communities to build schools, train teachers, promote the importance of education

and ensure that all solutions are sustainable long-term.

Street Child supports schools to find ways of paying teachers and affording the costs of

education by helping communities grow their income.

Information Communication Technology (ICT) Training Program:

Whether it is providing computer training for low-income women in Bangladesh, or attracting

growth and investment to small business in Bangladesh through the Internet, Information

Communication Technology (ICT) for development is a powerful poverty reduction tool.

A United Nations training program to help government officials and policymakers improve

capacity building efforts and leverage ICT for national and regional socio-economic

development will be launched in Bangladesh on 29 April, 2014.

Led by the Training Centre for Information and Communication Technology for Development

(UN-APCICT) of the United Nations Economic and Social Commission for Asia and the Pacific

(ESCAP), the Academy of ICT Essentials for Government Leaders (Academy) training program

was first launched in 2008 and has since been adopted and rolled-out in 27 countries in Asia-

Pacific and beyond. Academy modules are available in 12 languages, with plans for more

translations underway.

The program is being launched in collaboration with the Bangladesh Computer Council in Dhaka

Bangladesh. The launch ceremony will be officiated by the Minister and State Minister of the

Ministry of Posts, Telecommunications and Information Technology of Bangladesh and will be

attended by more than 100 junior to mid-level officers from 64 districts and educators from

leading public sector training institutions in Bangladesh.

Officers and trainers will also take part in a three-day workshop on the linkage between ICT

applications and development, e-Government information security and privacy.

Health and Sanitation

A) Safe-Water-&-Sanitation-project:

It is a necessary part for public health and environmental safety to ensure safe water, sanitation, care for personal health. These are the issues directly involved with the development. The situation of public health sector is still in alarming conditions due to the unequal distribution of wealth, improper guidelines and absence of planning. The conditions of healthful sanitation are still far backward from the satisfactory level from the perspective

Page 11: Activities of WHRD · * Department of Dhaka city corporation (North) as a colleague Enterprise, Government of Bangladesh No. 05 -34295, dated 24.12.2015 Department of co-operative

of healthful latrine coverage. Dhaka district is no different than this. For this reason, Work for Human and Rural Development (WHRD), with the assistance of own, is playing a vital role for achieving the goal of sanitation coverage by establishing a village sanitation center. Work for Human and Rural Development (WHRD) is implementing this program the own initiatives to create the awareness for safe water distribution and the activities of sanitation and to help to set-up alternate technology for arsenic free safe water side by side.

Objectives - a) Ensuring safe water and sanitation system for rural population. b) Creating awareness regarding personal health care. c) Assisting to set-up alternate arsenic free safe water technology and cooperating for this.

A) Prevention of HIV/AIDS among young People in Bangladesh:

It is HIV and Aids which is spread as pestilence disease that ruined the life of human beings in the world. This virus is also spreading throughout Bangladesh slowly. One third of the total population of Bangladesh is young. They have no idea regarding the infection of HIV and AIDS. As a result, this risk has been increasing day by day and this becomes the obstacle to build safe and developed life for the youth. We need to think about the risk of spreading HIV/AIDS among the youth. In order to achieve this goal, Work for Human and Rural Development (WHRD) will be implementing this program.

Objectives -

a) To provide HIV/AIDS prevention information, skills and services to the young people b) To increase coverage, quality, and comprehensiveness of interventions for vulnerable populations at highest risk of HIV/AIDS in Bangladesh. c) To collect data necessary for informing the development of national policy and programs for the prevention and control.

B) Disability-&-Development Project:

The matter of disability comes to a place where the difference of status between men and disabled men is huge. The status of disabled person in our country is in neglected situation not only in society but also in the family. The disabled person in the society and family is not only the symbol of disrespectful ness but also the symbol of superstitions and religious vagueness. As a result, the disabled person got the impression of the mind-set of self-destructive thoughts regarding themselves and thus loses all of their work skills. The prerequisite of the disabled person is to remove this barrier of the society and taking the measures of preventing the cause of creating disabled person anymore. At present, Work for Human and Rural Development (WHRD) is implementing various programs to develop the socio-economic situation of the disabled persons and their barriers with their own initiatives.

WHRD Domestic Bio-gas Plant:

The first biogas plant for solid waste fermentation with digester volume of 10 m3 was developed

by Issman and Duselier and built in Algeria in 1938.

Why using biogas is important-

The systems that are used to create bio-energy can greatly contribute to reducing

greenhouse gases as they have the possibility of reducing the need to use fossil fuels. By

providing a non-polluting energy source which is also renewable, the earth is being kept clean of

harmful emissions

Is biogas cheaper than LPG?

CNG car cylinder shown above can be easily swapped with Biogas (gobar gas) because both are

the same thing - METHANE. Biogas is more safer than CNG and 3 times more safer than

LPG Cylinder. NEVER USE LPG CYLINDER. ... Biogas is the Cheapest and never ending

multipurpose fuel!

Disadvantages of Biogas:

Few Technological Advancements. An unfortunate disadvantage of biogas today is that the

systems used in the production of biogas are not efficient. ...

Contains Impurities. After refinement and compression, biogas still contains impurities. ...

Effect of Temperature on Biogas Production. ...

Less Suitable For Dense Metropolitan Areas

Page 14: Activities of WHRD · * Department of Dhaka city corporation (North) as a colleague Enterprise, Government of Bangladesh No. 05 -34295, dated 24.12.2015 Department of co-operative

Can we compress biogas?

To compress and bottle, biogas needs to be purified by removing impurities as they come along

from the digester. These impurities reduce the heating capacity of biogas. Because of hydrogen

sulphide and carbon dioxide, biogas needs to be purified in an operation called Scrubbing

Can biogas be filled in cylinders?

Storing in cylinders will make the biogas susceptible to contamination as the storage cylinder

can corrode as a result of the sulphur content of the biogas. Rather than attempt to

store biogas in cylinders, they can be converted to biomethane as stored

How much biogas can be produced from 1kg cow dung?

Hence, 1/0.04 = 25 kgs is required to produce 1 m3 of Biogas. volume required to make 1 kg

biogas = mass ( 1 kg )/ density (1.15 kg/m3) = 0.86 m3. therefore to produce 1 kg of biogas we

need 0.86*25 = 21.7 approx 22 kgs of dung.

Can biogas replace LPG?

Clean Energy from Waste:Biogas is a clean fuel with good calorific value. It can be used as

a replacement for LPG or natural gas and can generate electricity. ... Organic waste of 200

kgs can contribute one LPG cylinder daily.

What are the benefits of natural gas?

Benefits of Natural Gas

Convenience. With natural gas, you'll never run out of fuel. ...

Versatility. Natural gas can do more than heat your home. ...

Savings. Natural gas can save you money. ...

Safety. ...

Consistent, Reliable Supply. ...

Future Possibilities. ...

Environmental Benefits. ...

Abundant Domestic Production.

WHRD Self Entrepreneurship Program:

Becoming your own boss and an entrepreneur is the new coveted career choice of the

21st century. People are fed up with working jobs that leave them underpaid and unfulfilled.

Although some entrepreneurs say they were born to build a company, it’s never been easier for

anyone to learn entrepreneur skills that can propel them into building a successful business.

Some effective ways to build entrepreneurial skills that matter:

Take a different path. “Creativity is the root of entrepreneurship.” -- Karndee Leopairote, Thammasat University.

Page 15: Activities of WHRD · * Department of Dhaka city corporation (North) as a colleague Enterprise, Government of Bangladesh No. 05 -34295, dated 24.12.2015 Department of co-operative

Creativity is the ability to see things differently and to provide solutions where there are gaps. To

build your creativity skills, intentionally try something new. Do something that others won’t do.

Read unusual books. Watch a movie in a different language. Travel to an unexpected spot. Talk

to people that are out of your circle of comfort.

"The Big Short" is a movie that depicts how several opportunist entrepreneurs and investors

managed to profit from the 2020 financial crisis by going against popular opinion.

Start a business. “You don't learn to walk by following rules. You learn by doing, and by falling over.” -- Richard

Branson.

There is nothing like real-world experience. Whether you run a business on the side or full-time,

you get the opportunity to grow your skills such as business planning, negotiation, sales and

marketing.

I started my first business when I was 16 years old, and learned more through making mistakes

than I could through reading any business book. My mobile car detailing business was successful

only because I was able to learn and make changes quickly.

Stick with challenges.

“It’s not that I’m so smart, it’s just that I stay with problems longer.” -- Albert Einstein.

Every successful entrepreneur has learned to develop their perseverance and tenacity muscles.

The life of an entrepreneur is never smooth sailing, and it takes guts to keep going when people

doubt your abilities. To build perseverance, create a goal or challenge that is meaningful and

don’t give yourself the to quit. Alternatively, give yourself a deadline to aim towards. For

example, if you want to create a better blog, make a commitment to write 1,000 words every day

for a year.

Delay gratification.

Elon Musk, the founder of Tesla, Solar City and Space X set himself a challenge to live on only

1taka a day to see if he had what it took to lead life as an entrepreneur.

Entrepreneurs have to get used to countless failures and almost zero rewards until they finally hit

the jackpot. To train yourself to be able to delay gratification, start small. Say "no" to the extra

donut. Keep your old car instead of going into debt to buy a new one. Wake up at 5 a.m. on the

weekends to work on your business idea instead of staying in bed.

Manage your own finances.

Understanding basic finance is essential in running your own company. You don’t have to be an

accountant, but you should at least be able to understand the basics around cash flow, assets, and

profit and loss.

Start by learning how to do your own taxes and manage your own budget and investments.

Volunteer to lead. The ability to lead a team and stay organized is important when you become an entrepreneur.

You can start by looking for volunteer and leadership opportunities around you. Volunteer to

lead a Meet up group, start a fundraising project for your favorite non-profit organization or get

involved with your local community board. Alternatively, coach a local children’s sports team or

just plan your mother’s birthday party.

By getting involved in bigger roles, even if unpaid, you get to practice your time management,

organization, leadership and teamwork skills.

Practice communication skills.

The best entrepreneurs have learned how to communicate their passion and dreams in an

engaging way, both online and offline. To learn how to speak publicly, join a Toastmasters

group, offer to speak at workplace parties, or even emcee at your friend’s wedding.

To improve your online communication skills, stay active on your social media accounts, blog,

set up an online Facebook group or create a newsletter on your favorite hobby or topic.

The more often you put yourself out there, the faster your communication skills will grow.

Learn from a mentor.

The value of a mentor is priceless when it comes to building your entrepreneurial skills. Rather

than make all the mistakes yourself, why not learn from someone else who has already made

them?

Mentors are not only great sounding boards for your ideas but they also can be fantastic

cheerleaders when the going gets tough. If you are lucky, you may find a mentor willing to train

you for free because they believe in you and want to give back. Some mentors will be happy to

teach you in exchange for you helping them out in their own business. Others offer a paid

service.

If you are young enough or at the start of your career, try to apply for internships as those are

great opportunities to wet your feet in the real business world.

Work in sales. “To me, job titles don’t matter. Everyone is in sales. It’s the only way we stay in business.” --

Harvey Mackay.

In every business, sales play a vital role in the survival, sustainability and success of a business.

You can have the best product in the world but if you don’t know how to sell it, it is worthless.

One of the easiest ways to learn how to sell is to get a sales role. It doesn’t matter if you are

selling Tupperware at parties or selling complicated technology solutions, you will pick up

valuable skills, such as learning how to ask questions of your prospect and researching your

target market.

Get involved with other entrepreneurs. Whether it’s attending entrepreneurial events, conferences, seminars or meet ups; spending time

with other entrepreneurs will help you grow in your own entrepreneurial skills.

If you have the time and guts, you can compete in an entrepreneur competition like Shark

Tank where any gaps in your entrepreneurial skills will be revealed very quickly. However such

a demanding experience will also multiply your learning speed.

Help others with their businesses.

“You will get all you want in life if you help enough other people get what they want.” -- Zig

Ziglar.

Being an entrepreneur is about solving problems with the resources that you have. The more you

help others solve problems with their own businesses, the more your own skills will grow.

For example, you can create an accountability group for entrepreneurs where you each help each

other out. In this way, you learn and grow together.

both free and paid, that teach a variety of entrepreneurial skills such as Skill

Incubator, Udemy and Udacity.

With such easy access to knowledge and resources, there really is no excuse that you can’t build

skills to succeed as an entrepreneur.
