We have the idioms of "English time"and "Nepali time". The phrases have norelation with GMT but attitude regardingkeeping time. They are guided by thegeneral belief that Nepalese are neveron time. That is why "Nepali time"stands for being late. We call "Englishtime" being punctual, as if that practicebelongs only to the West. Here, I wantto challenge the belief. We have manynational jatras (festivals).
For example, we have been observingKumari jatra and Machhindranath Jatrafor centuries. There is an auspicioustime to start these jatras, which isdetermined astrologically and has to bevery precise just like the time for a rocket
launch. The jatras need lots ofpreparation and team work. Thepreparation is so complicated that itinvolves collaborative effort of many
different teams. Still we have never seenor ever heard of delay from any team. For Kumari jatra, the chariot is alwaysready beforehand. Lakhes, tanakisi, bhairab with all the musician teamscome on time for performance. All theofferings are ready at the exact timewhen needed.

Just like "Nepali time", another label given toNepalis is that they are lazy people. From theWestern standard, Nepalis are less hard working. When I travel to the hills, I am amazed at theterracing in the hills. In offices, one may findNepalis hardly working. But the same peoplebecome hard working in Jatras and duringfarming. What could be the factor affecting theirattitude? From my reading, Nepalis may not behard working, but they are heart-workingpeople. They work hard when and where theirheart is involved.
So, rather than we labeling ourselves of beinglate and lazy, we need to explore what ourmotivations and working styles are. Wonderfulfacts can be revealed if we study how leadershipand team spirit work in all these festivals andtraditional works. It may be worthwhile toexamine the factors for the people involved injatras that motivate them to always work ontime and in coordination with the teams. Weneed to find what our approach is towards work.We may then find our own approaches toleadership and teambuilding, which can beentirely different from western approaches.(The author is a regular columnist in TheHimalayan Times daily.
