“All we have to do is peel the shrines like an onion and we will be with the King himself”. Howard Carter, 1922 This area of the Middle East is one of the world’s most intriguing regions. Egypt, in particular, has a well-documented history dating back some 5000 years and the treasures of the Nile Valley bear witness to one of the greatest civilizations ever known. Jordan and Syria also offer a rich bounty to curious travellers, with dramatic ancient cities and dynamic modern cultures. Istanbul was the seat of the Ottoman Empire for over 400 years and the influence of Turkey can be seen throughout the region.

Our tours are not simply designed to show you the highlights of these four great countries. We also take you to see some special places like Aphamea (Syria), Pella and Um Qais (Jordan) - and we have a particular expertise in medieval Cairo and Istanbul, where we’ll show you stunning examples of art and architecture that most visitors miss.

About Active TravelActive Travel is Australia’s most innovative tour operator. Established in 1982, we operate a fascinating and diverse range of holidays all over the world. We were the first Australian company to run cycling tours in China and since then we have developed a wide range of unusual and rewarding holidays to the world’s most exciting destinations. Included in our eclectic range of tours are river journeys in SE Asia, walking holidays in Europe, textile tours to Indochina, trekking adventures in the Himalaya and expedition cruises to Antarctica and the Arctic.

We have a wide range of trips in China, Vietnam, Laos, Cambodia, Burma, India, Europe – and of course in the Eastern Mediterranean. We specialize in colonial-style riverboat journeys along the Mekong, Irawaddy, Brahmaputra and Ganges rivers - and we also offer a range of one-off group tours, focusing on the unique attributes of our many destination.

Active Travel is a long-time partner of the Australian National University (ANU), in Canberra, and each year we operate a stimulating programme of tours in conjunction with its Centre for Continuing Education – from literary trips to England to painting holidays in the Greek Islands.

Our Tours - How do they work?Nearly all the tours in this brochure are designed for independent travellers. They are not group tours, and we can operate any of them just for one person. We have

presented a selection of our most popular itineraries but we can easily amend any of them to suit your flight schedules – in fact we tend to do this more often than not. Just tell us what you want to do, and for how long, and we’ll plan the itinerary for you – at the best possible prices. If you prefer to join a group, we also offer a couple of specialist escorted tours which you’ll find on pages 14 and 15. Or you can create your own group with a bunch of friends.

Who travels with Active Travel?Essentially anyone who enjoys a well thought out itinerary offering all the essentials but without being over-organised. People who enjoy wandering through the markets and exploring the back streets as well as visiting a variety of excellent museums and the more unusual sights. We attract people from all walks of life including families and seasoned travellers. They all share a common interest in travelling ‘outside the square’. Typically they look beyond the ‘glossy brochure’ because they want something more when they travel. We are proud to say that guests from our original tour to China in 1982 are still our customers – over 27 years of client loyalty.

Travelling - ‘the Active Travel way’Our job is not only to show you the sights but also to help you make your own discoveries. We allow you time to explore on your own and we deliberately don’t include all meals, so that you can experience the local cuisine. Past guests have praised the Active Travel style and we trust you will also. Accommodation & Nile CruisesWe operate quality holidays. In the major cities and towns we use both standard and superior 4-star hotels and the majority of our Nile Cruises are 5-star. Our selection criteria for hotels include location and quality of service and, where possible, we use family-run hotels or places with character. For example, in Alexandria we use a hotel built in 1906 and in places like Damascus, Aleppo and Istanbul we book you in the old quarter - in traditional houses that have been converted into boutique hotels.

Tipping or “Baksheesh”Throughout the Middle East, but particularly in Egypt, tipping is a way of life. Known as ‘baksheesh’ it is given for any service rendered and is deeply embedded in the social fabric of the country. Unlike western countries it is not necessarily a reward for good service and it should therefore not be referred to as a ‘tip’, in the western sense of the word. Everyone gives ‘baksheesh’ to everyone else and foreign tourists are expected to comply with this custom, especially as they are seen as people of wealth by the locals. Typically, for a one week tour, you can expect to pay about $100 in tips; we will provide you with detailed guidelines when you book.

Responsible TravelLike many of our travellers, we are well aware of the positive and negative impacts of tourism. When selecting ground operators we consider not only their professionalism but also their treatment of employees and their attitude towards environmental issues. We prefer to work with small local companies and family-owned businesses where the revenue earned from our tours stays in the country of origin.

Through our ‘Savanh Foundation’ we support a number of projects around the world including the total refurbishment and operation of a school in Sri Lanka that was destroyed by the tsunami in December 2004. We have also financed the restoration of a French colonial era house in Luang Prabang, once owned by the Lao royal family. In 2008 we raised over $35,000 for cyclone relief for several charity groups in Burma following Tropical Cyclone Nargis.

Australian-owned and proud of itCorporate takeovers are now common in the travel industry and we frequently hear of new mergers and acquisitions. We are happy to say that Active Travel is a true-blue, privately-owned Australian company where YOU are the focus. As Gandhi once said ... “our customers are the reason for our existence.” And it sums up the Active Travel approach perfectly!

Abu Simbel Excursion

The great temples at Abu Simbel (south of Aswan) are one of Egypt’s most celebrated highlights. Egypt Air operates several flights from Aswan each day and during high season there are also cheaper charter flights available. We do not include Abu Simbel in any of our tours (but we strongly recommend you reserve this option when you book your tour) and to guarantee the lowest possible price we do not collect payment in Australia. You just pay the ‘local price’ directly to our operator (US$ cash only) when you arrive. It’s easy and it saves you money.

Innovative Holidays & Adventures

“We’re really glad you suggested those extra days in Cairo at the end.

I had no idea there was so much to see and the walking tour was

brilliant. By the way, your Cairo rep, Didi, was also really helpful”.

Egypt’s grand monuments have attracted travellers for centuries and this short trip features all the highlights. It’s one of our most popular trips and combines well with a visit to Jordan. In Cairo you stay in an excellent, well-located, superior hotel - a perfect base for your visit to the pyramids, sphinx and the memorable Egyptian Museum. In Aswan you spend a relaxing afternoon sailing around the islands in a traditional felucca sailboat – and there’s also time for an optional tour to Abu Simbel. Boarding your five-star cruise boat you sail north towards Luxor, visiting the wonderful temples at Komombo and Edfu along the way. Arriving in Luxor your guide takes you to the Valley of the Kings, the Temple of Hatshepsut and the celebrated temple complex at Karnak before you fly back to Cairo for your final night.

Alexandria & the Mediterranean 3 dAyS Ex CAiROStarts: Daily

Alexandria is a delight. It enjoys a temperate climate for most of the year and, for many, it is a refreshing change from the noise and traffic that characterizes downtown Cairo. This short trip can be easily added to the beginning of your trip, providing you with a gentle introduction to Egypt. Alternatively, you can head up to Alexandria at the end of your Nile Valley experience for a couple of days of relaxation. Either way, it’s a side-trip that is well worth considering. We generally use the lovely old Windsor Hotel, built in 1902 and full of character. While here you enjoy a tour of the Alexandria Museum, the medieval Fort Qaitbey and the Roman catacombs at Qom El Shogafa – and visit the fabulous new library, the Biblioteca Alexandrina. itinerary

Wonders of the Nile11 dAyS Ex CAiRO WiTH 5-STAR NilE CRuiSEStarts: Every Monday*

This is our favourite trip, one that takes you on an extraordinary chronological journey from the beginnings of the Pharaonic civilization to the birth of Christianity, the establishment of the Moslem caliphate and the arrival of the Ottomans. Indeed, there is no other country in the world that can offer such an incredible depth of history within such a small geographical area. In Cairo you begin with the celebrated Step-Pyramid at Sakkara, built around 2620BC, before visiting the Giza pyramids and the splendid Egyptian Museum. In the south of the country you enjoy a 5-star Nile Cruise from Aswan to Luxor and visit several New Kingdom tombs in the Valley of the Kings. The Greco-Roman period is also represented with the celebrated temples at Edfu and Komombo. Returning to Cairo you leave the Pharaonic period behind as you visit early churches in Coptic Cairo, the excellent Coptic Museum, the exquisite Mosque of Ibn Tulun and two 16th century Ottoman homes. Your final day is spent exploring the heart of the medieval city, visiting an old caravanserai (medieval hotel), the Islmaic Museum, a stunning 16th century home and the bustling Khan el Khalili bazaar.

Essential Egypt & Jordan12 dAyS Ex CAiRO WiTH 5-STAR NilE CRuiSEStarts: Every Tuesday*

Jordan Experience7 dAyS Ex AMMANStarts: Daily

Jordan is somewhat of an enigma. Its premier attractions at Petra, Wadi Rum, the Dead Sea and Jerash are all well-documented, but what else does it offer the curious visitor? Quite a lot, in fact. It is a very ancient land, with numerous sites dating back to antiquity and beyond, and it offers some truly biblical landscapes. On this comprehensive tour you visit all the celebrated highlights as well as a special day exploring the wonderful classical sites at Um Qais and Pella, often missed by people in a hurry to move on to the next destination. Um Qais, in particular, is an extensive site with a massive theatre and the remains of a Byzantine Church. And in addition to the Crusader castles at Shobak and Kerak you also see the great Arab fort at Ajlun, with commanding views towards the Sea of Galilee.

Highlights of Jordan6 dAyS Ex AMMANStarts: Daily

Jordan is often overshadowed by Egypt and the Pharaonic civilization, yet it too has a rich and fascinating history. Known as the Land of the Old Testament, it is an ancient country whose roots go way back into the mists of time. For thousands of years it lay on the busy east-west trade route, and over time a number of important cities were established here. Of these, the most celebrated is Petra, located in a secret valley in the south of the country, and later both Philadelphia (Amman) and Jerash were established by the Romans. Jordan is a small country. The people are friendly, the roads well maintained so it’s easy to get around and the food is great with strong Lebanese influences. This short trip includes all the major highlights including comprehensive visits to both Petra and Jerash and a jeep safari into Wadi Rum’s memorable landscape. You also visit the imposing Crusader fortresses at Shobak and Kerak – and have time for a swim in the Dead Sea.

Syria is one of our favourite destinations with a wealth of ancient sites, vibrant bazaars, great food and friendly people. You begin in the ancient city of Damascus, where you visit the National Museum and in the old city you see the impressive Omayyad Mosque – one of the oldest in the world. You also visit the Azem Palace, explore historic khans and have a full day to explore on your own. A short drive brings you to the ancient village of Maaloula, before continuing through the Syrian steppe to Palmyra, the fabled desert city of Queen Zenobia. North of Damascus, and strategically located overlooking the Orontes Valley, is Krak Des Chevaliers, a magnificent Crusader fortress that remains in a near-perfect state of restoration. You enjoy a visit to this fairytale castle and then continue to Aleppo, stopping along the way at Hama and the ancient Seleucid city of Aphamea. In Aleppo you have a day to explore the wonderful labyrinth of medieval streets and vaulted alleyways before returning to Damascus where your final afternoon is at leisure. A particular highlight of this trip is your hotel accommodation in the Old City of Damascus and in Aleppo – where you stay in charming traditional houses now converted into stylish boutique hotels.
