What is active learning?
“Active learning happens when students are given the opportunity to take a more interactive relationship with the subject matter of a course, encouraging them to generate rather than simply to receive knowledge. In an active learning environment, teachers facilitate rather than dictate the students’ learning” *

Why active learning?“Research has shown that active learning is an
exceptionally effective teaching technique. Regardless of the subject matter, when active learning is compared to traditional teaching methods (such as lecture), students learn more material, retain the information longer, and enjoy the class more. Active learning allows students to learn in the classroom with the help of the instructor and other students, rather than on their own.”*

Interactive teaching method
points to remember… Students should be actively engaged in
the learning process and keep monitoring their own learning.
Ask students questions to determine what they actually know.
Students learn by talking to each other. They organize and articulate their thoughts.
Be aware of where students’ knowledge is and target just above that.
Focus on learning by students and not on teaching by instructors.

From Questions to Concepts
points to remember…
Before class1. Require students to read, think, and
reflect on content materials.2. Stay connected with students online.3. Students anonymously post
questions online. 4. These questions let the instructor
know what the students want to cover.
During class5. Teach by questioning, not by
telling.6. Pose a problem (students
individually reflect). 7. They then try to convince a
neighbor of the correct choice.8. Forces students to develop
concepts and understanding.
