About Sugary Drinks

Sugary drinks were once bought at a café. They are now available almost every-where we go and there are many, many brands and flavours to choose from.

47% of children (aged 2 to 16 years) consume sugar sweetened beverages daily, including sugar-sweetened soft drinks, cordials, fruit drinks, sports drinks and energy drinks. Evidence shows a significant association between sugary drinks consumption and increased en-ergy intake. People running markets/events etc. are able to justify sales of sugary drinks by saying that they are “sometimes activi-ties”, so serving “sometimes food” is okay. In reality, Aussie kids are consuming a large proportion of their daily calorie intake in the form of processed sugars. (2007 Australian National Children’s Nu-trition and Physical Activity Survey)

How much sugar is actually in drinks? Just for staters, there are ten teaspoons of sugar in a can of coke.

So what are local people doing to make it easier for families to make healthy choices? Through SEA Change, community group are changing what they sell and the way they display drinks in their drinks fridges. YMCA has removed sugary drinks from all sales and the North Neighbourhood Activity Group no longer sells sugary drinks at its Mitchell Park events. The Portland Squash & Racquetball Club participat-ed in a ‘Drink Trial’ supported South West Sports, which resulted in an increase in water sales from 59.1% to 79.4% of all drink sales and a decline in sugary drinks sales from 25.8% to 16%.

Portland District Health is phasing out the sale of sug-ary drinks. It has already removed one drinks vending machine from the site and replaced sugar sweetened cordial with artificially sweetened. JJ’s Kiosk which is located in the PDH foyer, has made huge changes to the way it displays drinks in two of it’s three drinks fridges.

Here are the changes:

Increased green drink choices from 2 to 5

Reduced SSB choices from 6 to 3

Increased artificially sweetened choices

Displayed an additional row of water
