National Physical Literacy Planning Meeting

•  14 National Groups met Nov. 14th •  Focus was on PL Education & Training •  Alignment around the PL Consensus Statement

•  Outcomes

National Organizations

Physical & Health Education Canada (PHE Canada) •  As Canada’s premier professional organization for physical and

health educators, PHE Canada advances physical literacy through various programs, resources, and tools, including: Passport for Life; Move Think Learn; the Fundamental Movement Skills series.

Coaching Association of Canada (CAC) •  The Fundamental Movement Skills of throwing, catching, jumping,

striking, running, kicking, agility, and balance and coordination, form the basis for future sport skill development and for the life-long enjoyment of physical activity.

•  Participants learn how to observe and improve the fundamental movement skills through the format best suited to the participant and their line of work.

National Organizations

Gymnastics Canada •  National Sport Organization for Gymnastics, a foundation sport for

early movement development. PL programming delivered in gymnastics clubs across Canada and with GCG programs like Move Your Body.

•  GCG Foundations-Intro NCCP trains coaches to deliver movement-based programming that supports development of PL.

60 Minutes Kids Club •  Free program that supports students and

schools with Physical Literacy and Health Strategies •  The suite of tools support delivery and tracking of healthy

behaviours, and fundamental movement skills, to students 5-12 years old.

National Organizations

Active for Life •  A national initiative created to help parents give their children the right

start in life through the development of physical literacy. •  Parents and professionals will find all the information, free resources,

and inspiration they need to keep kids moving, healthy, and happy.

Motivate Canada •  Specializes in improving the lives of young people by fostering

positive youth development and promoting youth-led community sport and physical activity programming.

•  They incorporate physical literacy in youth training and youth-led programs to support the healthy development of young people across Canada.

National Organizations

Athletics Canada •  National Sport Organization for Athletics (Track and Field),

foundational sport for early movement development. •  National PL program called Run Jump Throw Wheel

ParticipACTION •  Canada’s premier physical activity brand helping Canadians sit less

and move more through engagement initiatives and thought leadership.

•  ParticipACTION is working to promote, engage and align stakeholders with respect to physical literacy through projects like Canada’s Physical Literacy Consensus Statement and RBC Learn to Play.

National Organizations

Canadian Paralympic Committee •  Leads the development of a sustainable Paralympic sport system to

enable athletes to reach the podium at the Paralympic Games. •  The CPC has Physical Literacy resources and programs that

support the participation of children of all abilities in sport and physical activity – the flagship resource is the Paralympic FUNdamentals Physical Literacy Resource

Canadian Association for the Advancement of Women and Sport and Physical Activity (CAAWS) •  Dedicated to creating an equitable sport and

physical activity system in which girls and women are actively engaged as participants and leaders.

•  Developed several PL resources targeted at females including a PL resources for women 55-70+

National Organization & Standard

Canadian Parks & Recreation Assoc. (CPRA) •  The national voice on the social, health, economic,

community and environmental benefits of parks and recreation and represents over 90% of Canadian communities.

•  Through its 13 provincial and territorial members, awareness and education about Physical Literacy is implemented nationally using tools, resources and training.

HIGH FIVE® •  Canada’s only comprehensive quality assurance

standard for children’s programs. Focused on those who work with children ages 6 to 12.

•  Integrates PL into training, tools and resources about healthy child development to promote intentional ways to enhance positive experiences so kids stay active.

bi-lateral funding in the Canadian Sport System.
