Action Adventure - Matrix Assessment James Allen Q1)The narrative of the opening scene of The Matrix plays with audience expectations. For example, when the police try to arrest Trinity, an unarmed female, she fights back against 6 armed men and wins. This is in complete contrast to what the audience expects. We think that the police will no trouble in arresting Trinity but we are completely wrong. Another example of this is when, during the chase scene, Trinity and the agent appear to jump an impossible length across the gap between 2 buildings. This is clearly done on purpose as it is followed by one of the pursuing police officers saying “impossible”. We don’t expect anybody to do this, especially a woman. This is completely different to what we expect. However, it does have an action set piece at the beginning. This is typical of the action adventure genre. The characters however completely compliment stereotypes of this genre. Trinity is seemingly the villain in the extract and the agents chasing her seem like the heroes. In the extract Trinity is very much sexualised. This is shown by her costume, made of leather, looking very S&M. The agents seem very typical, considering their jobs. They are wearing suits, looking very formal and intimidating; this makes them seem different to the police officers who are wearing their uniforms. This makes the agents seem more important. The police are generic and look (in comparison to everyone else) very weak. In the scene where Agent Smith and the Lieutenant are talking we hear Smith says about the cops “they’re probably already dead”. This suggests that the Agents are much better and more powerful than the police. James L. Allen Q2) In the extract, camerawork is uses to keep up the tension and make the scene more exciting. For example, at the very beginning we see a low angle close up of Trinity when the police are attempting to arrests her. The low angle makes Trinity seem weak and defeated, antagonising her. It also make the police seem strong in comparison. Another example of using the camera for effect is the low angle tracking shot when Trinity is seemingly flying. The effect of this is making Trinity seem superhuman and incredibly powerful in comparison to the earlier shot of her being arrested. Editing is used to keep the extract flowing. During the gunfights we see the use of shot reverse shot in a fast pat manner to make the scene seem more exciting and tense. Throughout the chase scene there is a lot of cross cutting between the heroes and the villains. This allows the audience to see the chase from the perspective of multiple characters. During the chase scene the cuts are quite fast paced. However the cut often slow down in order to see the reactions and expressions. CGI is used to show Trinity flying through the air. This gives the audience the idea that she has superhuman powers. The mise en scene of the extract is used to immerse the audience. The costumes are used to show stereotypes of the characters. For example Trinity is wearing a leather suit. This is stereotypical because it shows Trinity in a massively over sexualised way. The agents are wearing suits, which are stereotypical of an action adventure film. This make them seem intimidating. The police use guns which

James Allen Q3) The gender roles in the extract are very different from the stereotype. Trinity is shown as a powerful character that is more powerful the barrage of men who are chasing her. This is in contrast to the stereotype showing women as damsels in distress. The agents, however, follow the stereotype very well. They are men who are equally as powerful as the women.

Matrix assessment: opening scene

Joe Amphlett Q1) The opening scene of the matrix fits almost perfectly with the generic conventions of action/adventure movies as you have a large fight scene that ends up with multiple trained police officers sprawled out on the floor in pain as they have been brutally beaten… by a woman. This is an unusual take on the genre as it allows a woman to be a “Bad Ass” as she is unarmed and she beats 6 armed officers with ease, breaking a few gravitational laws in the process. Another example of the events fitting together is the chase scene.in this scene you see trinity running for her life from a group of police officers and 3 deadly agents. You can see that she is highly trained and is in no shortage of energy and skills to out run her pursuers by pulling off impossible feats by jumping from building to building over a massive, busy main road. This fits together with the generic action conventions as you have impossible feats and adrenaline pumping scenes to get you hyped up for the rest of the film. Q2) You have a lot of editing in the film as well. For example when trinity jumps up and kicks the police officer in the face at the start of the extract, also when the multiple weapon discharges occur you have the gun flashes edited in. Another example of editing is when the director uses green-screening to allow both trinity and the agent to launch themselves from building to building with help from some invisible wire work, giving the viewers the sense that the pair have super-human qualities. You see this again when trinity spirals through the air and smashes through a tiny window and tumbles down a set of stairs almost unscathed, forcing her self to continue running as she knows that she will surely lose if she faces an agent head on. The camerawork on this scene varies in style quite a lot, for example you have an extreme close up on the torch , this allows for a dramatic fade into the opening scene where the police officers discover Trinity, sat at her computer, who evidentally whoops them Q3) – no answer -

Nikita Barr Media- Assessed mock- The matrix opening. 1). The two events has worked perfect in this matrix movie for an example there was a fighting scene where the girl was on her own in a dark room and she was talking to someone on the phone but she needed to hang up the phone because they noticed someone was listening on the phone call. The fight scene happened when the police when in the room and told her to put her hands up so when she did the police officer when up to her to cuff her but when he grabbed her hand she went to fighting mode. This scene show a lot of valance is happening. Trinity is a skilled woman who has a lot off power. In this scene the camerawork is used for a lot of things like slow emotion was used when Trinity jumped in the air and kicked the police officer and also they used and she got away. This is typical however the bad guy who is a girl got away and not many people expect that. 2). Editing creates tension in the scene when Trinity is running over the top of the building with the spies not far behind her this creates tension because the audience don’t know whether she is going to get away or if the spies are going to get her it also creates tension in the scene when the police officer jumps over the building as well and nearly falls this creates tension because you don’t know whether the police officer is going to fall or not . 3). Gender is a massive thing in this movie that I have noticed. I have realised that I have only seen one black guy in this movie. Also I have noticed there is only young people in this movie but I understand why because this movie has a lot of action and that means running, fighting, ex…. So old people will find it very hard to work in this movie and they will get tired very fast so that means they would have to keep stopping to take a rest but that also means the move would take a long time to finish. Heroes/Anti heroes. In this movie we have heroes for an example the people who live on the ship r good people but then we have anti heroes for an other example the agents are bad people who looks like they are nice helpful people but really they are not nice people they are evil because they kill people for no reason.

Luke Bayley

The Matrix- Luke Bayley Question 1 The Matrix plays with the generic conventions of the Action/Adventure genre. The film opens with a fight scene in which the film plays to audience expectations with how Trinity wins the fight against the police. This then leads to a typical chase scene, which then throws the audience off again with how Trinity uses her “powers” to escape the agents and the police. The extract presents Trinity as an antagonist and the police and agents as protagonists yet later in the film these portrayals are changed. The extract also portrays Trinity as a “Femme Fatale” character role and surprises the audience with her ability to bend the laws of gravity and perform things that would otherwise be impossible as referenced by the police when they say “That’s impossible”. The extract also sees Trinity play a pursued victim role and hints at the antagonist being a protagonist. We also see Trinity in a leather black suit and the camerawork makes her over sexualised with a particular focus on her behind. This is quite a typical thing for Action/Adventure films as many feature a sexy woman in a black leather suit as seen in another Action/Adventure film, The Avengers. The film breaks audience expectations frequently with how Trinity defeats the police then escapes from the agents via phone. It makes her seem badass and once again fits with the genre in how she is portrayed. The film also sticks with stereotypical roles with the police playing the typical dumb good guys role and is seen by when they sent men up despite the agents’ orders.

Action Adventure - Matrix Assessment

The Matrix- Luke Bayley Question 2 The opening of The Matrix uses camerawork to allow the audience to get a good idea of where the film takes place and who the characters are. The opening features a close-up Trinity to make her seem more important. This also features an in depth shot of her face as her face is in focus whilst the police are out of focus; this makes it seem as though something is about to happen and puts all focus on her. It also uses a range of mid-shots to show body language, an example being how the agents have an upright posture to show that they are important. Editing is used to keep the film going at a decent pace and make everything flow well. For example the use of fast paced shots and reverse shots allow the audience to follow the gun fights with ease. Cross cutting is used between the heroes and villains; continuity editing allows the audience to follow along with the film and allows it to flow well. The film also uses a range of CGI, green screen and special effects to immerse the audience and add a ‘wow’ factor. Mise-en-scene is used to set the scene and immerse the audience and allows the audience to realise how powerful Trinity is. The costumes shows Trinity in a stereotypical sexy black suit and the agents are wearing smart suits to show that they are important. Also, this makes the characters feel intimidating or vulnerable. The soundtrack adds an element of action and tension/surprise and is very tense and upbeat. This allows the audience to understand that something important is happening and that someone such as Trinity is being chased or in danger.

The Matrix- Luke Bayley Question 3 Gender is a stereotype that is broke in The Matrix as Trinity plays a strong female role as opposed to a strong male role. This is seen when Trinity beats the male police in a fight and then escapes from the agents.

Ellie Blair The Matrix question Ellie Blair. Q1). I think that the chase scene and the fighting scene in the matrix shows the action/adventure genre. Trinity (the woman) shows how she is very fast and can defeat the stereotypical ‘stupid police’. When Trinity jumps across the huge gap the police say ‘that’s impossible’ which can present the stereotypical ‘femme fatal’. The opening scene also shows the police officers trying to shoot the woman (Trinity). Trinity is dodging the bullets and is wearing a very sexualised outfit which is very typical of a ‘femme fatal’. The film also presents the police officers being sexist by saying they can defeat ‘one little girl’. The Matrix challenges stereotypical conventions by having a woman defeating the 6 armed male police officers. Q2). The editing shows the action adventure genre by showing trinity fighting in slow mo. It shows around her slowly while she’s doing karate. This shows how fierce she is and shows the ‘femme fatal’. They use special effects to show how what she is doing is impossible and it looks real. This makes him more powerful. Mise-en-scene shows how dark and gloomy it is which makes it look mysterious. Sound Camerawork Q3) – no answer -

30th November. Media - Assessed Mock – The Matrix Opening. Q1) There are two narrative events in the matrix. The first narrative is the fight scene. This is when Trinity is trying to hack into a computer until some *dumb* cops arrive. Then she was taken hostage .Than as the *dumb* cop tries to put hand cuffs on her she attacks him and does so super skilled self-defence acting to protect herself from being arrested. The second narrative event is the chase scene. There are some slow motions like in the scene when Trinity jumps over the really spaced out buildings then as the cops, agents and Trinity all run over some tin roofs. This looked pretty bad ass!. Finally the cops give up and this is time for Trinity to leg it! . As she soars through the sky and fly’s through a window . Q2) Camerawork: The chase scene is very fast tracking and with some close ups when the cops and the agents which are the bad guys but are on the cops “side”. You do get some close ups, over shoulder shots to see the facial expression on the cops as they are trying their hardest to catch up with trinity. You do see some long shots too, so that you can see a little bit of the humorous side of the cops struggling and the Agents and Trinity miles away. Editing: There are some slow motions like in the scene when Trinity jumps over the really spaced out buildings then as the cops, agents and Trinity all run over some tin roofs. This looked pretty bad ass! Mise en scene: The agents are suited on smart clothes with some shades. Trinity has got erotic tight leather outfit. They all seem to still wear the same out fits as the first scene. Sound. The sound track is very actiony music which is sort of tense and “on your toes” music. Q3) – no answer -

Assessed mock 1/The matrix is a typical action/adventure film because it contains narrative elements that

are stereotypically in action/adventure movies. The extract contains a gun-fight involving police officers and a mysterious woman. It also goes on to involve a chase which involves more police officers, 3 agents and the mysterious woman. The gun fight involves the mysterious woman doing stunts such as hovering, running around walls and dodging bullets, which is typical in action/adventure films. The chase involves the mysterious woman running up stairs, running over roof tops, jumping over large distances and jumping through windows. She is followed by agents who can also run over roof tops and jump over large distances. The police officers are typically dumb cops because 6 police officers failed to arrest 1 woman and they can’t keep up with Trinity in the chase.

2/Camerawork is used to create a tense and exciting extract by showing who is important

and who is not. For example when the camera looks over the police mans shoulder which Is called an over the shoulder shot, at Trinity and she is told to ‘freeze and put your hands in the air’, which then follows a policeman walking towards her. Making her look like she has been caught, but then attacks them and the scene finishes with six armed police men at her feet. Editing is used to create a tense and exciting extract by over exaggerating fight scenes. For example when Trinity hovers in front of the police man which creates a feeling that there is going to be a fight, also when Trinity runs around a wall dodging bullets, which shows her abilities. Another example is in the chase scene when trinity jumps across a large distance between two buildings in slow motion, to make I look like she is jumping across a larger distance than it actually is. Mise-en-scene is used to create a tense and exciting extract by making the scenes look very dull and hidden. For example when Trinity is sat in the room hacking a computer at the start of the extract, all that is in the empty room is a chair, a table and the computer, which makes her seem really suspicious. Trinity is given the typical clothing of a sexualised character, black leather and skin tight, when there is an over the shoulder shot on the police men, it shows Trinity’s body including her bum, which also over sexualises her. The agents and the police both look like typical police and secret agents due to there uniforms and suits. Soundtrack creates a tense and exciting atmosphere by stating off with a tense slow music which makes the viewer wonder what is going to happen, however when Trinity is being chased by the police and the agents, the music speeds up which makes it more exciting.

3/ The extract contains police officers and a mysterious woman. It also involves more police

officers, 3 agents and the mysterious woman. the mysterious woman doing stunts such as hovering, running around walls and dodging bullets, which is typical in action/adventure films.

Jessica Hunter Assessed mock–The Matrix Opening Question 1 The opening extract from the matrix does suit a typical action/adventure film because it has dumb cops and secret agent but it also doesn’t because the main character, Trinity is a femme fatale which is a typical villain. The events fit the action/adventure because it is a typical fight but there is one unusual thing is that its Trinity fighting 6 men with weapons and she has no weapons but still manages to win by using martial arts. As well as the fight scene the chase scene is unusual because both Trinity and the agents seem to fly over and between buildings and near the end of the chase scene Trinity seems to fly through a window and gets her guns out to shoot the agent if he was still chasing her. Trinity isn’t a typical stereotype, apart from the fact that she is in tight leather and is over sexualised. She isn’t typical because she beats up 6 cops and some people would say being a woman she wouldn’t be able to do that. The cops are very stereotypical by being stupid and thinking that they’re always right but when the agents come in they prove them wrong and they are quite stereotypical in the way they look but in the way the fight its not because they seem to fly and they can fight Trinity. Assessed mock- The Matrix Question 2 The camerawork creates a tense and exciting extract by making Trinity seem small by using a high angle shot making her seem powerless and like she’s not strong or dominant but the it turns out she is when she fights off 6 police men and they laid dead at her feet as you can see because of the high angle shot. Editing makes the film seem more action packed and when fighting it makes it seem like Trinity can fly and that she can see the other persons punches in slow motion and can run up walls and easily kill people with no effort which makes her seem super human which she is. The mise-en-scene makes it seem dark, dull and mysterious and because Trinity is wearing dark leather clothes it makes her look like the villain and when she’s sat in a room that’s dark lit and she’s on a computer it makes her look like a hacker whereas the agents look like they’re very strong and very powerful. The soundtracks make it seem more exciting because its quick and rapid like the way they’re running and fighting, it makes it seem more lively and exciting because you know something is going to happen. Assessed mock-The Matrix Question 3 This extract refers to stereotypes when it shows the American cops as they are shown as dumb cops and that is the stereotype shown in most action/adventure the cops kick the door open and try and shoot at her and the all miss as she’s beating them all up one by one.

Jessica Hunter Whereas the agents turn up in suits and sunglasses as in every action/adventure movie and they would know everything about trinity and in the chase scene when the agents are chasing Trinity across the roof tops and all the dumb cops and tripping and stumbling as they follow the agents and Trinity. The city in which they are in seems dull and mysterious where as usually they’re bright and amazing but in this one it doesn’t look like you’ll want to be there. Trinity isn’t stereotyped because in a usual action/adventure film it would be a male fighting and killing all the police but in this case it is a woman and some people think that only men can fight and stick up for them self as shown in stereotypical films but this extract shows that women can stick up for them selves as shown by Trinity.

Leigh Mason Assessed Mock –The Matrix Opening.

1) Explain two ways in which the narrative elements (characters and events) fit in to the action/ adventure genre. Use examples from the extract.[10]

The events fit the genre because there is a fight scene. This is usually shown in the action/adventure. In the fight scene the good guy is an unarmed woman There is also a chase scene. In the scene there are different skills. For example she is able to walk up walls and she can fly over things. The characters are fit into the action/adventure films. The characters are: .trinity .the agents Trinity fits into the genre because she is dressed in black and beats up the bad guys. The agents are dressed in light brown suits and are seen as the bad guys in the film. At the end of the scene, Trinity goes inside a phone box so she can leave the matrix. The agents drove a truck into the phone box while trinity was trying to get away, but she still mysteriously gets away even once the truck has crashed into the phone box. This is how the matrix fits into the action/adventure genre.

2) Explain how each of the following elements of media language are used to make a tense and exciting extract:

. Camerawork

. Editing

. Mise-en-scene

.soundtrack Give two examples so each element from the extract (20) The camerawork makes the extract tenser an exciting by using a tracking shot. This makes it more interesting because you are following the main character. It also uses some point of view shots. For example, when the truck is heading towards the phone box, Trinity turns around and we then see what it looks like from where show is. POV shots are also used when she fell down the stairs and pointed the guns to face the stairs. Editing makes it tenser by making it look like Trinity is able to fly, jump really far and escape very easily. For example, Trinity runs up the wall at the start. That would have been edited to

Action Adventure - Matrix Assessment

Leigh Mason make everything more exciting. She also falls directly into a window. Editing would have been used for this. Mise-en-scene is use to create effect by making the actors costumes represent their stereotypes. For example Trinity is dressed in tight clothes. Soundtrack is used to add tension by playing dramatic music when someone is getting chased or complete silence when someone is trying to keep quiet. For example , when Trinity gets chased dramatic music plays in the background.

3) Discuss the representations in the extract. Refer to stereotypes in your answer. Give examples in your answer.

In the extract, the gender types are very stereotyped. For example Trinity is dressed in tight black clothes. This makes her more sexualized, making her more appealing to male viewers. Neo is stereotyped as the regular guy who is slightly geeky. This is a different stereotype for a male character. Morpheus is stereotyped by as the leader, alpha male kind of person. The rest of the team see him as a father figure. The agents are the bad guys in this film. Agents are normally seen as the good guys who try and save the world. But in this film they are the bad guys. The city is stereotyped as what you would expect an American city to look like. For example, it is very busy , has a lot of traffic everywhere and there are a lot of people walking around in the streets.

Liam Sherlock Q1) The opening extract from The Matrix is both typical and not-so-typical. Mostly, just the latter. In the beginning, the female focal character (dressed in villainous black attire) is confronted by the Police. They break into her room in a derelict building. It is dark so we assume that she is trying to hide from the Police, which is what a fugitive would do. We see over the shoulder shots of the Police officers, implying that they are the main characters. There are six armed men, and the woman kills all of them as they attempt to apprehend her. Not in an ordinary manner, either, as she dispatches the first with martial arts, and ends up running along the wall to dodge a spray of bullets from a panicking Police officer. The scene is over in seconds, ending with a high-angle shot of her standing dominantly over the broken bodies of the Police. This gives the audience the impression she is an antagonist. She also comes across as a typical femme fatale, but in reality she is a far from typical main character. Before this scene, we are introduced to the Agents, sharply dressed and well-spoken servants of the law. They seem like typical FBI Agents so we assume that these are the good guys. When she is confronted by the Agents, a chase scene occurs. This scene is similar to other action films, because the Police are chasing down a supposed perpetrator, and it is on a rooftop, too, which is a favoured spot for a chase in films. The soundtrack intensifies throughout the chase, and halts as Trinity leaps from the rooftop to escape her pursuers. The Agent does this too, and the Police lower their weapons in awe, followed by the words ‘that’s impossible’. To summarise…

The focal Femme Fatale, Trinity is portrayed as an impressively agile martial artist. She dresses in attire that makes the audience assume she is the villain of the extract, because it is black. Black often symbolises the dark, which is associated with the ‘bad guys’. She is a strong female character, which is not typical for action films.

The Police and their Lieutenant, who seem confident that they can take down Trinity, who they describe as a ‘little girl’. They are subject to awe when they see the Agent and Trinity jump onto another rooftop, something that no human could possibly do. Their initial hubris and sudden surprise is very typical of the Police in films.

The three Agents, smart-looking and mysterious. A typical character type called a ‘Suit’, so people initially assume that they are the good guys. They are actually ruthless hunters that will stop at nothing to neutralise their targets. Not very typical.

Liam Sherlock Q2) Technical elements used: Camerawork: We see over the shoulder shots of the Police officers, implying that they are the main characters … The scene is over in seconds, ending with a high-angle shot of Trinity standing dominantly over the broken bodies of the Police. This gives the audience the impression she is an antagonist. Editing Mise en scene: She dresses in attire that makes the audience assume she is the villain of the extract, because it is black. Black often symbolises the dark, which is associated with the ‘bad guys’. The three Agents, smart-looking and mysterious. A typical character type called a ‘Suit’, so people initially assume that they are the good guys. They are actually ruthless hunters that will stop at nothing to neutralise their targets. Sound: The soundtrack intensifies throughout the chase, and halts as Trinity leaps from the rooftop to escape her pursuers. The Agent does this too, and the Police lower their weapons in awe, followed by the words ‘that’s impossible’. Q3) Stereotypes are represented in a manner that is not typical in Action/Adventure films… The Police officers are a prime example of an unchanged stereotype. They are classic, incapable Cops with a cocky attitude and itchy trigger fingers. They confront Trinity confidently, believing that they can take her down. The Lieutenant tells the Agents that they can handle ‘one little girl’, which implies that they think the men in this scene are more superior to women, a very common view for ‘dirty cops’. They also fail to keep up with the Agent on the rooftop chase, let alone the person they were supposed to take down. When Trinity beats the Police officers and escapes, everything that stereotypes had previously dictated was beaten into the ground, set on fire and thrown out of a window, because it used to be that women were incapable of freeing themselves from danger, and it was left to the men to save the day. Also, the character type that she is initially portrayed, is a femme fatale. The characteristics of this role usually include a ruthless take-no-prisoners combat style, and little to no positive facial expressions. The Femme Fatale is a role associated with female antagonists, but she is on the side of the protagonist… This film shows the female character is more capable than the men, which defies generic conventions. The Agents are initially typical characters, posing as FBI Agents. This ruse continues until the rooftop chase, in which the Agent and Trinity run across Rooftops, and the Police clamber to try and keep up. Of course, the Agents reveal themselves to be far from normal ‘suit’ characters when one of them leaps from a rooftop in pursuit of Trinity. After this, we would assume that they are a ‘badass’ character, but it still remains ambiguous as to what the roles

Liam Sherlock are. Most films like to establish who is the main villain and who is the heroic protagonist by this point. As for the settings, America is represented a little differently in this extract. In other Action Films, American cities are quite clean looking, shown most commonly in public places during the day… this does the opposite of that. All of the extract takes place in and outside of a derelict Hotel during the night. It appears to be overgrown, and quite dark inside, rather than clean and polished like a lot of other representations of American cities and buildings.

Courtney Stott Assessed mock, the matrix opening. 1a) The narrative events fit in with the extract because they have a fight scene where the good guy beats up the bad guys using marshal arts and gets away this is typical however unusual because in the fight scene the girl is the so called bad guy and she defeats 6 police men and 3 very skilled agents. 1b) The narrative events fit in with the action/adventure genre because of the chase scene where the bad guy who we now think is the good guy which is a girl gets away. This is also typical however the woman gets away from 6 police officers and 3 spies which are all men. 2a) The element of soundtrack creates tension and excitement when in the chase scene when Trinity is running to the phone booth and a spy in a tank is driving towards it ,the music gets quicker and louder and when the tank hits the phone booth and what we think is with Trinity inside it the music goes quiet and slow when the spies are going up to see if they got her this creates tension because the audience don’t know whether the woman is dead or not then it goes quite again and shows her gone which gives the audience a sigh of relief that they haven’t got her. 2b) The element of editing creates tension when they use the shot reverse shot (SRS) in the scene when Trinity has just done a stunt and jumped from one building to a window in another building then rolled down some stairs and lay on her back with guns in both hands staring at the window ready for the spies to jump through this creates tension because you don’t know whether she is safe and the fight is over but then there is more tension when she carries on running because the audience is wondering why is she still running and what is she running from. 2c) The element that is camera work creates tension in the way it cuts from each scene where it goes from a picture of an explosion to a scene where it’s a close up of Trinity which shows her scared emotion on her face whilst she is waiting to see is and spies or policemen jump through after her this causes tension. 2d) The element mis-en-scene is interesting because the costumes are very typical because the policemen look like policemen because of the things they wear such as the hat also the spies are wearing typical suits and glasses to make them look mysterious however Trinity is sexualized with her tight black leather top, pants and jacket to make her look like a sexualized villain however she is a good guy with is confusing to some but makes the movie more thrilling and interesting. 3a) The representation of Trinity is very stereotypical and different to who she actually is, she is made to look very sexualized with her tight clothing but when she acts she acts totally different to the way she dresses

Katie Widdup Question1. The opening extract for the matrix does and does not fit into the action/adventure genre. This is because there are secret agents and dumb cops. It doesn’t fit because it is unusual to have a girl as the main character and to be a villain. The events in the extract fit into the action/adventure genre because there is a typical fight scene and also a typical chase scene. But the unusual thing about it is that the main character called ‘Trinity’ is a woman and is seen as the villain. She manages to defeat the ‘cops’ and ‘agents’ that come after her. Also in the chase scene it looks as it she has got run over, but when the camera looks in the rubble no one is there. So people will question where she has gone and what type of person she is. In the fight scene the ‘cops’ who are seen as dumb go up to arrest ‘Trinity’. But somehow she can run across walls at jump across buildings so of course she manages to escape. This is a typical fight scene because of course ‘the woman dressed in black’ will be able to defeat the agents. In the beginning the ‘agents’, ‘cops’ and ‘police lieutenant’ are seen as the good guys and ‘Trinity’ is seen as the villain, but later on in the film you begin to understand that it is the other way round and really the agents are evil. Katie Widdup Question 2. Camerawork is used to create a tense and exciting extract by using high angle shot of ‘Trinity’ when the ‘cops’ find her; this is to make her seem weak and useless. But she ends up being very strong and powerful. Another example of camerawork is when a low angle shot is shown of the ‘agents’ this is done to make them seem more powerful than the ‘cops’ and ‘Trinity’ in this extract. Editing is also used to create a tense and exciting extract. Using slow motion when ‘Trinity’ is defeating the ‘cops’ does this because it makes her seem more powerful. She manages to jump in the air and kick the ‘cops’ in the face then run around on the walls to try and get away. Mise-en-scene is used to make the extract tense and exciting. It is used when you see the characters outfits. For example in the opening extract you can tell that the first people you see are ‘cops’ because of how they are dressed and as well they have guns out ready to attack the villain. Another example of when it is used is when you see ‘Trinity’ she is seen as the villain at first, she is wearing black skin-tight clothes. As well it is set in a dark, gloomy and dull place. Soundtrack is used to make the extract tense and exciting. It is used when there is a fight scene to make it seem more dramatic. It starts of slow so you are wondering what is going to happen, then it speeds up to create tension.

Katie Widdup Question 3. Age is represented in the extract as young, this is a stereotype, and they are maybe in there 30’s. This is an example of stereotypes being used. People believe that young characters are used to appeal audiences and this is true. The characters especially ‘Trinity’ are presented as young to represent the fitness and ability of them. Gender is also another stereotype that is being used. Normally in films people think that males are the heroes and villains and women are the damsels in distress. But in the Matrix ‘Trinity’ is a female villain. She is very strong and powerful as well. Heroes are stereotypes as well; they are the main characters in the movie. In the extract it makes it seem like the ‘agents’ are the heroes and ‘Trinity’ is the villain, but further in the movie you begin to understand that it is the other way round. Villains are stereotyped as well because in the beginning you can’t tell that the ‘agents’ are the bad guys. So at the beginning you are uncertain of who they are and just automatically judge someone. When really they could be the heroes.
