Dave’s On Leave
Dave Gray is currently on well-earned Long Service Leave and I am
filling his shoes in the office. They say to really know someone, ‘walk a
mile in their shoes’. I already have a great appreciation of the layers of
work and responsibilities that the role requires. That said, I am really
enjoying the variety of tasks and the increased connection with students,
staff and school community that comes with the role as well.
KPS Trivia Night
From all I hear the Trivia night was a great success with over 170 people
in attendance. Seems some questions really got all teams thinking and
‘stumped’, particularly the surname of the Famous Five children!
Congratulations go to the winning school council team. And a great big
thankyou and congratulations to the Parents and Friends club that made
it such a well-run and fun night.
Vicspell
After a very close and difficult, but fair, selection process involving both
written and oral spelling of some very tricky and challenging words,
congratulations go to our Year 6 & 5 KPS representatives and
emergencies.
Year 6 : Kieran Lewis & Ella Roberts. Year 5 : Patrick Bier & Riley
Olden. They will travel to Chairo Secondary College Leongatha on
Wednesday 13th to compete in the South Gippsland Zone competition.
Emergencies Mia Ylagan and Jack Mitchell.
Well done to all the students who tried out. It was very rewarding to see
the values of fairness and encouragement demonstrated by the
competitors.

Parent Opinion Surveys
Congratulations to Cindy Anthony for winning the prize for early
responses to our Parent Opinion Survey. We have had about half the
surveys returned so far. Freddo Frogs are still the reward for returning
your survey so it is not too late!
Secondary College Year 10 Work Experience Students
We welcome Lucy Mulqueeny and Hannah Sparks from Wonthaggi
Secondary College to Korumburra Primary School for their week of Work
Experience with us. The girls have experienced a range of educational
activities at KPS and found plenty to do in the classrooms and specialist
classes.
Strategic Plan 2014-2017
On Monday night the staff continued the process of establishing our
school purpose and values statements for the next four years. This has
proved a valuable and engaging opportunity for all the staff to contribute
their thoughts and professional understandings about why we are here.
We considered the values which are important to underpin the behaviours
and expectations of students, staff and members of the school community
to provide the best education for the children of Korumburra.
(Continued from page 1) The School Council members will also consider these important
questions and make their contributions to the school purpose and values
statements. Together with parent contributions, these will all go towards
the development of the 2014 -2017 Strategic plan
document to guide KPS in the next four years.
Production
Planning, preparation and practise for our Whole School Production are
well underway and well in the hands of our very talented and experienced
specialist staff. An array of colourful costumes and props hang from the
rafters in the art room, Dance music and sharp moves are heard from the
gym in PE sessions. Melodic singing, drumming and strumming comes
from the music and instrumental rooms. Keep Wednesday September
17th free to experience this great event!

The students have begun Term 3 with much excitement and enthusiasm. The 4/5/6 students have already started creating their costumes and painting
backdrops for this years school production. Their work is looking fantastic.
Students in all year levels have also designed fabulous self portraits for the 2014 Tea Towel Project which has been organized by the Parents and
Friends committee.

Junior Department News
The Junior Department are busy working very hard and have settled back in to classroom routines.
The Preps are really enjoying the ‘Tinkering table’ during Investigations where they have been taking apart old radios, broken CD players and sanders.
If anyone would like to donate any other broken ‘treasures’ can you please see a Prep teacher. I know the Prep children and teachers would really
appreciate new items to take apart and explore.
The Year 1 and 2 children are engaged with their inquiry topic of ‘weather’. The children enjoyed recording the multiple weather changes in
Korumburra in a weather diary at school and at home. We would like to thank you for supporting your child with their first piece of homework! The
children have also been busy with their descriptive writing. I would like to take this opportunity to share and celebrate some of our children’s
creative writing with you.

Rain
I see grey clouds, they look a lot lik
e mist or fog.
The mist is a heavy grey colour. Sometimes even a
light grey. If the rain gets really heavy it might
flood. Grey clouds can sometimes mean thunder.
Rain can create puddles.
I can hear crashing, bashing thunder all around
me. I can also hear pitta patter on my roof.
Crashing thunder mixed with rain makes a sound
like waves bashing in to rocks. If I look out my
window I see lightning striking trees and other
objects. I can hear ra
in bounce off concrete.
I can feel small pebbles hitting my skin. If t
he rain
gets harder it can sting or hurt m
e.

Rain
When you’re soaking wet you
hug yourself to keep yourself
warm. When you’re outside and it
starts raining you run inside to
get warm and probably have a
warm bath. I feel m
iserable, cold,
wet, soaking and lonely

Wind
I could see the trees moving side to side. The
trees were also banging together. The leaves
were going down the hill and going around the
pole. Clouds were moving all over the place.
Leaves were banging on the concrete. The
tape was going up and down. Trees were
swaying. The dirt was blowing into people’s
face and eyes.

Music Report
The Production is fast approaching!!!
A big thank-you to the students for their enthusiasm and commitment to learning and participating in their production practises and creations thus far.
The dances are going swingingly with Mrs Snooks, and this week we have been combining Music and P.E classes to see how the items will play out. It
has been a pleasant experience.
Our Art teachers Mrs Simcock and Mrs Warren have been working hard with the students to get their costumes on the go. Most classes have almost
completed the basic structure of their outfits, and it is a testament to our art teachers abilities and expertise. Thank-you lovely ladies for your hard work. I
would also like to thank Atsu Tanaka-Morrison for her help in sewing the grade six chicken costumes. Every bit of help is greatly appreciated!!!
In Music we have been learning lyrics, melodies and auditioning muso’s for the musician support roles in each classes song. The students who are
chosen for these parts will not be doing the dance, but playing on stage on their chosen instrument. Please read with care the note that will be handed
out tonight detailing your child’s costume needs.
It is only the extra bits and pieces of clothing that you will need to start gathering in order to support the made costumes in Art classes. Good luck in
foraging and please don’t hesitate to check with your child’s teacher or myself if there are any queries.
Keep your ear to the ground for more information in the coming weeks…Yee Hahhh!!!!

Year 6 News
The Year 6 team have been focussed on reflecting upon Adrian Paterson’s recent visit to our class. We are also continuing to look at “Work, Citizenship and Government”. The children have been involved in
planning a town that meets the needs and the wants of a community.
The children are busy drawing maps and looking at scales of measurement. Furthermore, next week the children will be involved in coming up with a business that would meet the needs of a community,
designing business advertisements, business cards and the like.
Stay tuned next week for pieces that show the children’s reflections on
Adrian Paterson’s visit.

Year 5 News
New Inquiry Topic
It’s been an exciting few weeks for the Year 5’s as they’ve started their new science topic themed around ‘The Solar System’. Already conversations between students and teachers spiralled into an inspirational session of ‘what if..’, ‘did you know..’, ‘could there be..’ questions. Over the next few weeks, the Year 5’s will be exploring individual planets further and developing a further understanding behind other features that are part of our solar
system.
Math Groups
This week also saw the start of our new ‘differentiated’ math sessions. These sessions allow students to break out into like-minded groups, helping them to consolidate and extend their mathematical skills. Currently all the Year 5’s are focussing on subtraction, having shown they have a clear understanding of addition. Some of the subtraction tasks include working with 8 digit decimal numbers as well as applying known strategies to real life situations. Miss Abbott’s group are really challenging themselves by solving more complex word problems, where students have to apply a range of
different strategies in order to find the answer. Good going guys!
