SOCIAL AND HISTORICAL James Patrick Bulger (16 March 1990[1] – February 12, 1993) was a boy from Kirkby, Merseyside, England, who was abducted and murdered on 12 February 1993, at the age of two. The killers were sentenced to custody until they reached adulthood, initially until the age of 18, and were released under new identities and on a lifelong licence in June 2001.

Sarah Payne, who lived in Hersham, Surrey, disappeared on the evening of 1 July 2000 from a cornfield near the home of her paternal grandparents. A nationwide search commenced within 48 hours, and Payne's parents made numerous television and newspaper appeals for her safe return. On 17 July, a body was found in a field near Pulborough, some 24 km (15 mi) from Kingston Gorse where she had disappeared.

On 21 March 2002, Amanda Jane "Milly" Dowler, a 13-year-old English schoolgirl, was reported missing by her parents after failing to return home from school and not being seen since walking along Station Avenue in Walton-on-Thames, Surrey, that afternoon. Following an extensive search for her, her remains were discovered in Yateley Heath Woods in Yateley, Hampshire, on 18 September.

On Sunday, 4 August 2002, Holly Wells and Jessica Chapman had attended a barbecue at Wells' home in Redhouse Gardens, Soham. At around 6:15 pm, they went out to buy some sweets. On their way back, they walked past a house in College Close which was the home of Ian Huntley, the caretaker at the local secondary school. (The house was later demolished and the site levelled.[1]) Huntley saw the girls and asked them into his house. He said that his girlfriend, Maxine Carr, their teaching assistant at St Andrew's Primary School, was in the house too. In fact, she had gone to visit family in Grimsby, Lincolnshire. Shortly after the girls entered the house, Huntley murdered them.[citation needed]

SOCIAL AND HISTORICAL

Missing Dan Nolan was set in 2002.

I remember all my contact, regarding the interviews for the play, were organised by landline. Mobile calls were often “pay as you go”, expensive and rarely on contract. Dan, for example had no credit for his phone that evening. I was aware of only a few children who had gone missing in the years leading up to Dan’s disappearance. Notably James Bulger, nine years earlier, and the same age as my Ollie when he went missing. Pauline, Dan’s mum, asked me to guess how many people went missing in the UK at that time per year. I replied about ten, imagining if anything I was over-estimating. I was shocked to hear that the Missing Persons helpline received 100,000 calls per year. 30,000 cases remained unresolved, like Dan’s.Dan’s parents were struggling to get any coverage for Dan’s disappearance. With no Facebook they were entirely reliant on the television news programmes which had decided to focus on the case of Millie Dowler, possibly because she was a girl, and therefore, they perhaps concluded, more likely to appeal to the viewing public.
