Acta Grammatica Spring 2013 Normally at this time of year I am writing about the onset of spring and the coming summer with its sound of ball on bat….and yet here we are, shivering and watching the long-range forecast for potential snow-closures! Having said that, I’m delighted to say that we’ve survived a long and determined winter without once closing our doors to students. And so we enter Spring 2013 as Boston Grammar School (A Selective Academy), having successfully converted to academy status on January 1 st , as planned. For that, I would like to thank those governors and support staff who worked tirelessly with me to secure a quick conversion to both charitable and company status. There was a great deal to do in a short time, and a great deal of work for people to do beyond their normal day jobs. Of course, being an academy does not shield us from the ever more vigorous education expenditure cuts, but it has given us the opportunity to innovate, and to begin an ambitious programme of regeneration and redevelopment, more of which will follow in future newsletters. Unfortunately, the winter did bring some sadness to the school: we lost Councillor Paul Mould, a long- term governor, Old Boy, and staunch supporter of the school, around the same time as hearing of the sad death of Miss Dora Stanley, a benefactor of the school who had set up the Stanley Trust, which funds one of our scholarship awards for BGS students going on to university. Both offered tremendous support to the school and will be sadly missed. On a happier note, our students have continued to excel. Most recently, our Young Enterprise teams performed exceptionally well, with the ‘Velocity’ company winning ‘Best Company’ the Area Final this month, supported by the ‘Infinity’ team picking up an award for the best marketing. Our young business people continue to thrive, in what has now become something of a tradition of entrepreneurial success for the school.

Spring 2013

Normally at this time of year I am writing about the onset of spring and the coming summer with its sound of ball on bat….and yet here we are, shivering and watching the long-range forecast for potential snow-closures! Having said that, I’m delighted to say that we’ve survived a long and determined winter without once closing our doors to students. And so we enter Spring 2013 as Boston Grammar School (A Selective Academy), having successful ly converted to academy status on January 1st, as planned. Unfortunately, the winter did bring some sadness to the school: we

lost Councillor Paul Mould, a long-term governor, Old Boy, and staunch supporter of the school, around the same time as hearing of the sad death of Miss Dora Stanley, a benefactor of the school who had set up the Stanley Trust, which funds one of our scholarship awards for BGS students going on to university.

Further on in this issue, you will read of the many sporting successes of the school, as BGS continues to punch well above its weight in sports in general, but the football and basketball teams have particularly excelled this year. There are always other, sometimes less high-profile but equally impressive, victories in the offing. One example would be the impressive performance of our quiz teams recently, with our Junior ‘A’ Team heading for the Cambridgeshire Finals, having won their local area heats by beating Kesteven and Grantham Girls’ School by 740-480 pts.

Academically, we are working hard with our examination cohorts, as they see their next –and for some, final – exam season looming just five weeks away. As ever, we have sixth form students working hard to secure the grades they need for their Oxbridge p l a c e s , t h e i r m e d i c i n e , architecture and engineering courses at Russell Group

universities, their advanced apprenticeships with leading firms, and their every aspiration beyond. In these days of league table manipulation and ‘points accrual’, we keep to our policy of entering students for the courses they want and need, taking on the hard subjects with gusto! In the latest league table, it is nice to finally see some recognition for quality as opposed to quantity: the Government now measures the percentage of students achieving at least AAB at A Level in Russell Group ‘facilitating subjects’ (the traditional ‘hard’ A Levels), and we managed 12% last year - twice the national average. We would like to do even better this year! So with Year 11, 12 and 13 students spending their Easter break revising for exams (and parents will know how true that statement is for their own son or daughter), we head towards a new term. As we do, I’d like to thank those parents who responded to the recent BGS Parent Survey. If you haven’t seen them, the headline results are posted on the school’s website. I hope that we can continue to merit your confidence and support. Paul Marsh Principal

School Trips School trips and visits are an important part of Education as it enables our students to gain experience of their subjects outside of the classroom environment. The past few months have been especially busy. I n J a n u a r y M r P u r v i s accompanied four students from Year 9,10 & 11 to the Regional Heat of the National Chemistry Competition, ’Top of the Bench’ at the University of Derby, with our group of students winning their Heat and moving onto the National Final on 20th April This was followed a few days later by an English trip to the Octagon Theatre in Bolton with fifty six students from Year 9 & 10 to see a Production of Of Mice & Men, a text that is studied both in English Language and English Literature. This trip enabled them to gain a greater understanding of the text as well as giving the students the opportunity to see a great stage performance! January also saw Mr Wainwright and Mr Ward accompany thirteen students to the Headingly Stadium in Leeds to watch an open training session with the England Rugby Team, enabling them to see first hand how elite performers prepare and train for a n I n t e r n a t i o n a l R u g b y

tournament. What a wonderful opportunity for those students involved! February was another busy month for visits, the first being of an International Flavour with Our Head of Music, Mrs Rich leading seven musically talented students to Weiz in Austria as part of the United School Bands Trip. The students had the opportunity to meet, perform and rehearse with students from other EU Schools as part of the project. Year 12 DT students visited Chris Sharp Cabinets in Lincoln for a tour of their workshop. They were able to gain a valuable overview of the design and manufacture process of Oak Furniture. This was followed by a stop at The Continium Recycling Centre, the worlds most advanced plastic bottle recycling centre. The Ski Trip to Austria took place in February Half Term and had been over a year in the planning. We are pleased to announce that the trip was an overwhelming success, with 36 students taking part in the Tour. What a great opportunity to experience something that you may not normally get the chance to do. The trip went so well, that we are already planning the February 2014 Ski tour to Italy. Letters are available from

Mr James. The Year 11 Historians attended an Exam Workshop in Lincoln on 28 February, which included a theatre production of “Hitler on Trial” This is an annual educational visit and has been very well received by the students. Mrs Rich took five students to Birmingham Town Hall in March to attend a schools prom featuring the music of Steve Reich, which is a set work composer for GCSE and A-Level Music. A great day out, and a wonderful surprise when the composer himself made an unexpected appearance on stage

Mathematics Once again we are pleased to announce another successful term.

8 pupils from Year 10 entered the Year 10 Team Maths Challenge. The event took place at Christ’s Hospital School in Lincoln on the 8th February, organised by the UK Mathematics Trust (UKMT) and in partnership with the Further

Mathematics Support Programme (FMSP). 16 teams from around the region gathered to test their mathematical skills. The teams performed well for a first outing and we were incredibly pleased at the A and B teams tackling the questions with great gusto! The boys had to work hard on a study round, being able to solve questions on a topic that isn’t usually met until the Sixth Form! It was just not meant to be with some incredibly good teams from other schools in the region.

We also entered the Junior Team Maths Challenge on the 8th March, again organised and supported by the UKMT and FMSP. Our team of four was made from two Year 8 and two Year 9 boys.

The Priory Academy in Lincoln hosted this event and our boys worked hard on a number of rounds including a difficult and fast Relay Round. We were incredibly proud of their achievements as they came fourth in the region, beating a number of teams from other local grammar schools. We were only a few points off the leading teams; they were a very strong team and will hopefully be able to represent the school again next year. As well as the team challenges, the Intermediate Maths Challenge for individuals in years 9 to 11 was held on the 7th February. The results are as follows: Best in School: Luke Bray Best in Year 11: Luke Bray Best in Year 10: Mihir Rao Best in Year 9: Matthew Wearden Gold: Luke Bray Jack Taylor Luke Cocks Edward Jacobs Mihir Rao Silver: Liam Ingamells Tobias Long Lewis Goulder Stuart Wharff Benjamin Jackson Matthew Wearden Bronze: Bilal Minhas James Buckley Shehryar Khan

Isaac Charles Jeremy Lee Michael Flynn Tyler Rowney Luke Cocks

Luke Bray, Jack Taylor and Nicholas Doddrell have all qualified for the Pink Kangaroo on the 21st March. Around 5000 pupils from all three year groups across the UK are invited to participate. The European Kangaroo Foundation is an international organisation based in Paris which organises the Europe-wide European Kangaroo. The name sounds strange, but recognises the fact that the European organisation was inspired by the Austral ian Mathematics Trust. Each year over three million school pupils across Europe (and beyond) take part at various levels. Therefore pupils who sit the Kangaroo are part of a huge European community of mathematics students.

Trip to the German Rhineland in

August This year the German Trippers are hoping for slightly warmer weather, as they have opted to visit the German Rhineland in the last week

of August (26th till 31st—six days and five nights) They will again speed up the journey by flying into Cologne Airport and then take a German coach down to their base in Boppard-am-Rhein, a famous vineyard centre on a bend in the River Rhine. A merry mix of twenty eight junior boys (Year 7s/8s/9s) will be joining the trip accompanied by a tried and trusted group of teachers led by Mr Anderson. We will be taking a boat trip on the river and visiting a fortified castle with dungeons and torture chamber. We will be taking a cable car ride into the vineyards and also paying a return trip to Aqualand in Cologne, with its special slides and pools as well as fitting in our annual visit to a German football stadium (Bayer Leverkusen). In recent years we have “done” the Olympic Stadium in Berlin, the Allianz Arena in Munich, FC Cologne and FC Freiburg in the Black Forest. A highlight for the boys will be a r e t u r n t o t h e f a b u l o u s Phantasialand Theme Park near Bonn, with its thrilling rides, sparkling shows and mouth-watering waffles and ice cream! There are still at least two places to be filled by any junior pupils or any two senior students who would like

to improve their German by assisting with the trip! Please see RWA in Room S asap. Cost (including all excursions) is £550. See Germany while you still can! You will be impressed!

TECHNOLOGY Yr12 trip to Chris Sharp Cabinets

and Continuum Recycling Centre

We have taken the AS Product Design group on a variety of different trips to try and cover the majority of their theory based work out and about in the real world. This allows them to make links from industry in the classroom, while revising and in their exams. At Chris Sharp Cabinets they saw the production of high quality oak furniture, from the design stages using SolidWorks (a CAD package we have in school) through to the warehouse with their impressive display of automated CAM machines. This gave the students va luab le f i rs t -hand ons i te experience of batch production, using CAD/CAM. We then visited the Continuum Recycling Education Centre where students had a tour around the world’s most advanced plastic bottle recycling centre. The visit included a presentation, tour of the factory and activities, again giving students first-hand experience of the processes used.

Yr12 visit to Loughborough Materials Department

The visit gave the students an insight into the exciting world of materials science and its impact on just about every aspect of design, technology and engineering. Students were given a very enthusiastic presentation from one of the lecturers at the university on Polymers with some great examples to highlight why the understanding of material science is so important in the development of everyday products. Students were treated to hands-on activities within the department. They got to see some exciting demonstrations and learn about career options with materials science.

Eco-Garden We have a lovely school site with some nice ‘green’ spaces; it would be great to turn one of these into our ‘EcoGarden’. Some staff have been busy thinking, measuring and coming up with some ideas over the past term - thoughts so far are to grow a selection of vegetables (that could hopefully be used in the school canteen), plant some fruit trees, provide the birds/bats/insects with some houses, a weather station and a pollution sensor. If you would like to be involved in this, you need to be in Yrs7-9 and see Mrs Rich or Mr James for more details. Calling all Parents – If you are a

keen gardener and are planting your crop for this year, could you possibly do a couple of extra and contribute to our EcoGarden? If you also have any equipment in your shed/garage that you don’t use could you please arrange to bring it in?!?!

STEM club The technology aspect of STEM club is going well with a few of the students finishing their projects and already onto new ones. We are offering different projects for you to get involved in, targeted mainly at years 7-9 simply because years 10-13 have plenty of coursework to do! There have been some great p r o j e c t s g o i n g o n f r o m Boomerangs to Thermometers, through to iPod speakers (pictured now complete is James Rodgers’ Minecraft speakers). We run Monday after school until 4.30, giving you the opportunity to explore any project you like. Feel free to come and see the projects that we suggest and equally feel free to come with your own ideas!! We’re hoping to attach the EcoGarden to this, and we’re also investigating the possibility of a Raspberry Pi club for the

programmers amongst you – more to follow if we’re successful. EES (Engineering Education Scheme) - update We currently have four students taking part in this competition, Alice Stacey, Peter Mitchell, Ben Hallam and Zak Woodcock. The team have been selected for their individual expertise in Technology, Maths and Science. They have been paired with Guttridge Ltd, a local firm from Spalding that specialise in conveying a variety of materials. Guttridge have set the brief for the students to design a testing rig for materials greater than 2mm in diameter. They will test the internal friction and wall friction of the materials. The students attended the three day residential at Loughborough University from 17th – 19th December where they worked solidly on their project for 3 days. They spent a lot of time making their test rig (pictured) before the residential, they then spent the three days testing and evaluating their results. They are now in the process of formulating their final report due in on March 28th. This then gives the judges time to read about their project before the celebration event on 25th April 2013. We wish them all the luck and hope for a favourable finish with the possibilities of sponsorship for degrees and possible future employment!

Yr11 students – if you are interested in the EES scheme please research it and see me for details with a view to enter it next year.

Thanks to everyone for their continual support, Mr James

Austria Ski Trip 2013

After a long but funny 24 hour bus journey, we arrived in Austria at the vital hotel. Our hotel was really nice with a good restaurant and excellent food choices throughout the week, it was different each night. Each day we had a packed lunch for the slopes and got to see a variety of different restaurants. The slopes were amazing! They varied in size but were all in good condition, making it easy to ski. The instructors were good fun all week and said they had a good time with us. This made each day better knowing we were going to have fun all day. They all helped us improve loads throughout the

week; even by the second day most of us knew the basics…but some still couldn’t stay on their feet. It was great that everyone progressed as well as they did. Overall it was trip we will never forget and one that I definitely recommend going on if you get the chance. By Owen Clarricoates As Owen says the 2013 Austria trip was amazing. It was the first time some of the staff had skied and the 31st time for others! We all had a great time and a thoroughly enjoyable week away. We’d like to thank the students for being well behaved and polite throughout the week and making it a pleasure to look after you. The hotel commended us as ‘hardly knowing we were there’. It is great to take so many students to a family based hotel and blend in with the other guests.

Overall a brilliant trip, which we hope to repeat next year in Folgarida, Italy. If you haven’t had letters already, please see Mr Hodgkin or myself for one, places are already going quickly though so please hurry. Mr James

Pycock Family Win Big Holiday Prize on ITV Game Show!

Old Boys Leon and Alex Pycock (“star” sportsmen) joined their Dad and sister Hayley in the first edition of ITV’s new family game show, “Dale’s Great Getaway” starring the popular “camp” presenter, Dale Winton! They had to dance cowboy-style

and guess disguised pop tunes,

then Dad had to sing opera, Leon

suffered a “Yes/No” interlude and

Hayley had to milk a goat! They

won through to the “f inal

showdown” and, though they

forfeited their £15,000 cash, they

won a week in sunny BARBADOS.

(other holidays on offer were to

Bergen in Norway and Bognor

Regis!)

After Schuhplattler’s busiest year ever—New blood needed to

keep the show on the road!

Since “Schuhplattling” was only done “for a laugh” at German Tour Reunion Evenings, it is amazing that it is still going 23 years and 705 gigs later! We meet every other Sunday from 4-30 till 6-30 in the BGS Hall and work out the routines which are performed at each gig. Long-standing leader, Jon Coupland has just choreographed his first ever number, “The Circle Dance” (also known as “The Cuckoo Dance”), whilst Mr. Anderson has been putting the dancers through their paces on “The Upside Down Dance.” It is hoped to feature these numbers at the first gig of the year, the Spalding Twinning Dinner on Monday March 25th. The troupe had its best ever year in 2012, performing no fewer than 34 shows, with highlights including the Olympic Torch Relay Show, the Lincolnshire Show (co-starring with

the Lincs FM DJs and Grace and Ted off “Britain’s Got Talent!”) and the honour of opening the Lincoln Christmas Market by presenting their routines in front of Lincoln Cathedral! The troupe members have built up a firm fan base and are an official Lincolnshire Tourist Attraction thanks to their formidable pedigree of ten tours abroad, hundreds of local and national gigs and numerous TV appearances including “Blue Peter,” “My Kind of People,” “Britain’s Got Talent,” “Let Me Entertain You” and “Look North” with Peter Levy joining in the troupe’s antics! They are firm favourites at the Spalding Tulip Parade and Carrington Rally in May and they are looking for further acts to join them on the famous Carrington Waggon Stage and, indeed, NEW SCHUHPLATTLER STARS to follow in the footsteps of the hundreds of pupils who have taken part over the years. IF YOU WISH TO (1) do something completely different (2) travel to places with good friends (3) raise valuable funds for charity (4) improve your level of fitness (5) learn all about German

customs and traditions

Join the activity which combines all school c lubs in one—The Schuhplattlergruppe! See Mr Anderson in Room S at any time. What about two or three good mates having a go? Or contact any of the fourteen stars currently on the books—you will be surprised by their commitment!

Lose to Margaret Thatcher’s Old School in Final!

The BGS A Team of Ben Hallam (Captain), Nicholas Doddrell, Jeremy Lee and Matthew Wearden took part in the East Midlands Senior Chal lenge Quiz at Nottingham High School on Monday, They had a bye in the first round and then took on the host team, beating them by 860 points to 620. This was the highest score that BGS had ever achieved in the

senior competition! Congratulations to our students! They then faced a talented team from King Edward V! School in Louth in the semi-final, beating them by the narrow margin of 500 to 420. Out of nine A and B teams the BGS boys ended up in the FINAL against Kesteven and Grantham Girls’ School A Team. Here they met their match, as they were visibly tiring, the questions were harder and the girls’ team captain was exceptionally quick on the buzzer. They went down 590-280. Our B Team of Thomas Vamplew, Dominic Reynolds, David Wardell and Daniel Ene tried their best but were beaten by Nottingham High B Team 470-230 and Kesteven and Grantham B Team 530-230. Many thanks to Mrs. Ellis and the Y8 duo, Oliver Cammack and Kian Thompson for their great support. We were sorry to lose Mihir Rao and James Burr through illness. As always we live to fight again! Keep up the Quizzing! BGS students Beat KGGS & Head for Cambs Final! Following their success in winning the Junior Challenge Plate Competition at St Ives, Cambs. in 2012, this year’s Junior Challenge Team of Neelay Sant (Captain),

Keep Fit Club X-Country Update Congratulations to the ten U13 boys who represented BGS in the Fenland League race in the grounds of Burghley House, Stamford on Thursday. After a nightmare journey involving a 40 minute detour because of a road closure and a “wild goose chase” to find the course, the boys made it with ten minutes to spare! Blake Garwell finished 2nd to his old rival Bradley Allen and 2nd overall in the series. Well done, Blake! The A Team packed well, with Aaron Bradshaw 17th, Tom Evans 20th and young Daniel Bradshaw

24th, making a respectable score of 63 points. The B Team featured William Parsons (35th), Matthew Connolly (36th), Kieran Duncan-Johal (40th) and Finley Whitaker (44th), with Edward Buckley 45th and Kiril Zahharov 46th. Well done on finishing a lengthy course! Following the Inter-Counties at Birmingham Blake is ranked 254th in the UK and Sam Sharp 284th. (Official result)

Sunderalnd! It was grey and cold when the runners left BGS with RWA at 6-30 a.m., but by the time they reached Sunderland, heavy snow was falling, changing the Herrington Park course into a winter wonderland. It was so cold that the runners could not feel their feet, but our brave duo, Blake Garwell (Y8) and Jack Rushby (Y7) made it to the starting line. Blake went off at the double and ran a very good race, ending up in the top 100 in the UK at no. 92 in a time of 12 minutes 56 seconds. He was in real pain at the end and had to hobble back to the park & ride bus service along with our Jack who finished gamely at no. 187 in 14.54. It was a race which the boys will

never forget for the rest of their

lives!

England Rugby 13 Pupils from Boston Grammar School joined Mr Ward and Mr Wainwright for a trip to attend an Open Training Session with the England Rugby squad on Friday 25th January 2013 at Headingley Stadium, Leeds.

The exclusive “invitation only” event was offered to a selection of lucky pupils from Y7-10 who had made a positive contribution to the game of Rugby, whether it is in the school environment or outside of school in Junior Club Rugby. This exciting opportunity gave the lucky students at Boston Grammar School the chance to take part in a “once in a lifetime” experience and see first hand how elite performers prepare and train for an International Rugby Tournament. There was live commentary on the day which helped enhance the pupil’s knowledge of the game and

gave an understanding of what was happening in the session and the reason behind some of the activity that took part.

To top off an excellent day the lads then got to meet the majority of the squad to get souvenirs such as rugby shirts and balls signed by their heroes as a lasting keepsake of a memorable trip.
