    ACT2 NEWSLETTER MAY 2018

2018-2019 OFFICERSPresident Rick Riordan Treasurer Sheila Henderson

Secretary JoAnne Hansz Past President Betty Mangum

It appears from our surroundings that spring is finally making its way to the Sandhills and we will, after all, end the coldest winter since Jeanie and I arrived almost 13 years ago. I am sure we all know individuals, and/or have family and friends, in other parts of the country that have gotten through, or are still getting through, a very difficult winter as well, where ever they reside. But what this extended winter has done is make me think more about how long we have been here in Moore County, and how many individuals I have talked to that have been here longer, some even much longer. And the fact that ACT2 is about to celebrate 30 years in existence. I found out recently that Act II (as it was known at the time of formation) was formed on August 3rd, 1988. At the time the events included dining, lunches, crafts, bridge groups and "special

events". Over time we have continued to evolve these groups as well as add others that have become ACT2 favorites, like Thirsty Thursday, Book Clubs and the Holiday gathering. The point of highlighting this is that ACT2 is still a viable and vibrant organization that continues to provide social outreach to its members on an ongoing basis, and we expect to continue that tradition for the foreseeable future. As we move forward to the 30th year celebration please let us know how long you have been in ACT2 and feel free to provide us with any memories, or pictures, you would like to share at the celebration in June. Until then, as always, I will see you around town.

Rick (Rick Riordan - [email protected]) PS - as I finished writing this my lovely wife Jeanie informed me today's high will be 48 degrees

☹so maybe spring hasn't quite sprung as yet.

    ORIGINAL ACT2 BOOK CLUB

The next Book Club meeting will be on Monday, May 28 at 12:30 at

the home of Joan Grant, 155 Hearthstone Road, Fairways on 7,

215-0377. Based on the true story of a forgotten hero, the #1

Amazon Charts bestseller BENEATH A SCARLET SKY is the

triumphant, epic tale of one young man’s incredible courage and

resilience during one of history’s darkest hours and is available in

    paperback.

Pino Lella wants nothing to do with the war or the Nazis. He’s a

normal Italian teenager --- obsessed with music, food and girls --- but his days of innocence are

numbered. When his family home in Milan is destroyed by Allied bombs, Pino joins an

underground railroad helping Jews escape over the Alps, and falls for Anna, a beautiful widow 6

    years his senior.

In an attempt to protect him, Pino’s parents force him to enlist as a German soldier --- a move

they think will keep him out of combat. But after Pino is injured, he is recruited at the tender age

of 18 to become the personal driver for Adolf Hitler’s left hand in Italy, General Hans Leyers, one

of the Third Reich’s most mysterious and powerful commanders.

Now, with the opportunity to spy for the Allies inside the German High Command, Pino endures

the horrors of the war and the Nazi occupation by fighting in secret, his courage bolstered by his

love for Anna and for the life he dreams they will one day share.

    Fans of

All The Light We Cannot See, The Nightingale and Unbroken will enjoy this riveting saga of

    history, suspense and love.

Discussion Leader: Jeanne Casinella. Refreshments: Pat Mattoon and Susie Roeder. Please call Susie Roeder for any questions.

The June reading is Before We Were Yours by Lisa Wingate.

On Wednesday, May 23rd we will meet at 11:30 a.m. at Nina's in Pinehurst to dine and discuss 'The Butterfly's Daughter' by Mary Alice Monroe.

Every year, the monarch butterflies fly more than two thousand miles on fragile wings to return to their winter home in Mexico. Now Luz Avila makes that same perilous journey south as she honors a vow to her beloved grandmother who raised her, to return her ashes to her ancestral village. As Luz departs Milwaukee in a ramshackle old VW Bug, she finds her heart opened by a series of seemingly random encounters with remarkable women. In San Antonio, however, a startling revelation awaits: a reunion with a woman from her past. Together, the two cross into Mexico to await the returning monarchs in the little village her grandmother called home, but they are also crossing a border that separates past from present . . . and truth from lies.

We need someone to lead this May meeting. The restaurant reservation will be made ahead of time, and discussion questions will be provided to the leader. Contact Jeanie Riordan if you'd like to attend the May meeting. Email at [email protected] or call 255-6105.

SURVEY REGARDING NEW TAG LINE FOR ACT2

An update on this “contest.” The three judges have received a number of suggestions from the members for a new tag line and hope to announce the winner soon. The Board was pleased with the response and will hopefully announce the winning tag line and name of the submitter soon.

LUNCH BUNCH Please mark your calendar, and begin to make reservations for ACT2 Lunch Bunch at Wolcott’s Restaurant. On Wednesday, May 9, at noon, we will gather at Wolcott’s at 160 W. Pennsylvania Ave., Southern Pines. It is across Pennsylvania from The Pilot building and a little down the block toward Bennett. You have to park on the street- I usually park in the public lot on the corner of Bennett St. and Pennsylvania (behind a defunct Mexican restaurant) and walk one block. You may call Freida at 235-9284 or email her at [email protected] to reserve a place.

The menu offers sandwiches, ‘on the bun’ with fried, chips, fruit, dressed greens or slaw. Blackened chicken, Hawaiian style chicken, Carolina burger, Agnus burger, or mushroom Swiss Angus burger are all $9. Shrimp or Oyster Po’Boys with the same sides are $12. I think I may try the lobster roll for $16. Sandwiches come with the same sides as above. Chicken salad croissant, or grilled cheese (with tomato jam and bacon, or the BLT with Avocado are $8. French toasted ham and cheese, toasted Cuban or Rueben are $9. The lobster burger is $12. There are entrée salads: Caesar for $10, garden at $8, lobster Waldorf at $16, or a ‘simple salad’ for $6. Chicken breast can be added for $4 extra, shrimp for $6 extra. Lobster bisque is always available at $6 and $8. The lunch menu has 3 entrees: shrimp and salmon curry at $12, Chop steak with bacon, onion gravy and side salad, or chicken Marsala at $10.It is an interesting little place; I am sure you will like Wolcott’s. TIME FLIES WHEN YOU ARE HAVING FUN

It’s hard to believe that ACT2 has been around for 30 years and we wanted to do something special to mark the occasion. There have been some changes to our plans

and we have had to change the date to make certain we can accommodate everyone who wants to attend. So, do me a favor and update your calendar with the date change. We hope there will be a huge turn out as we honor past presidents and others who have been a part of ACT2 over the years. If you know anyone who has been a part of ACT2 in the past but you haven’t seen at our events recently, please share this information and invite them to join us for food, fun and fellowship.

The new date is Sunday, June 10 from 6-8 PM.

SUNDAY SOCIAL Realizing how busy everyone is and trying to ensure that our 30th anniversary celebration is well attended, the Board has decided to cancel our usual June Sunday Social. Then it turned out the day would actually be the same DAY. This doesn’t mean there is a hidden meaning to the cancelation and rest assured, Sunday Social WILL be back in the fall. Meanwhile sign up for the special 30th anniversary party on Sunday June 10th.

ACT2 BOARD MEETING The next meeting of the ACT2 Board will be held on Saturday, May 12 at 9AM at the Pinehurst Members Club. These meetings are open to the membership and are usually less than an hour in length and a great way to learn what is going on in ACT2. Just stop in Payne’s Pub and pick up a complimentary “cuppa” before the meeting and join us for the meeting in the Chapman Room.

MOVIE AND DISCUSSION GROUP I have had no one express interest in the 2 part Van Gogh showing the middle of May so it is on to Plan B. I will continue to look for movies that might be of interest to a number of our members and circulate choices. I have also looked into the Temple Theater but nothing really grabbed me. Just let me know if you have any suggestions at [email protected] or 910-215-8814 and watch future newsletters and eblasts. Judy McCaffrey
