Act 4, Scene 1Back to the Witches

• Mac visits the witches and demands info• The scene is full of FORESHADOWING• It also feeds into THEME of appearances can be deceiving: 

• The witches SEEM to want to help Macbeth but they are filling him with info that will lead to his downfall!

The new prophesies (FORESHADOWING)1. "Beware Macduff, Beware the Thane of Fife."2. "None of woman born shall harm Macbeth."

Mac assumes that since Macduff was born of woman he isn't really a threat, but plans to kill him anyway­­hey, might as well play it safe...

3. "Macbeth shall never vanquished be, until great Birnam Wood to high Dunsinane Hill Shall come against him." or (Mac will be safe until the trees from far off Birnam forest move to Dunsinane Castle, where Mac lives. And really, trees moving? Come on!)

Mac demands to know more (never a good idea to make demands of witches) and they show him a string of Kings that lead back to Banquo.

CHARACTER ALERT: Mac is RUTHLESS and IMPULSIVE• "From this moment the very firstlings of my heart shall be the firstlings of my hand." (He will act on every thought. Since Macduff has fled to England, he will kill Macduff's family)

Act 4, Scene 3Malcolm and Macduff

• Macduff tries to convince Malcolm in England to overthrow Macbeth• Malcolm is suspicious and thinks he has been sent by Macbeth• When Ross tells Macduff his family has been murdered Malcolm realizes Macduff is serious• Mal has been raising an army and encourages Macduff to turn his grief into revenge 

More THEME and FORESHADOWING here• Malcolm appears disinterested in Macduff's plan but is really plotting against Macbeth• Macduff will seek revenge for his family's murder: "Beware Macduff."
