Boosting energy efficiency in pump and fan applications
Variable speed drives (VSD) save energy compared to other flow control methods such as throttling
ABB standard drives have built-in energy efficiency counters that work out energy savings of the application in kWh and MWh; the cost of the energy saved in a local currency; and the carbon dioxide (CO2) emissions equivalent of the energy saved
Built-in statistical tool Load Analyzer saves process data, such as current and torque values, which can be used to analyze energy efficiency of the process
Energy optimizer feature for motor control improves energy efficiency and system operation by up to 10 %

Flexible installation
Benefit: Space savings in cabinets
Feature: The compact drives share the same height and depth in all frame sizes. They can be installed sideways or side-by-side, and mounted with screws or on a DIN rail
Advantage: Drives are flexible to install and their compact and uniform dimensions facilitates cabinet installations

Configuration toolsPanel assistants
Advantage: Fast and easy drive set-up
Feature: The drive’s assistant control panel is equipped with an assistant function, that guides through the setup of the basic parameters for motor set-up, PID control etc.
Benefit: Time savings during drive commissioning

Configuration toolsFlashDrop tool
Advantage: Easy to use tool for high volume machine builders and distributors for pre-configuring drives
Feature: FlashDrop is a powerful palm sized drive configuration tool that copies a pre-defined drive parameter set into a drive in 2 sec without a power connection to the drive!
Benefit: Considerable time savings with volumes of drives
© ABB Group April 23, 2023 | Slide 12
Configuration toolsDriveWindow Light
Advantage: Easy and flexible parameter setting and file management at the office or at the site
Feature: DriveWindow Light is a PC tool for drive start-up and maintenance. It can be used in an offline mode, which enables parameter setting at the office even before going to the actual site
Benefit: Flexible use of the PC tool results in time savings

Energy efficiency toolsPumpSave and FanSave
Advantage: Easy-to-use PC tools for estimating energy usage and potential energy savings
Feature: PumpSave and FanSave calculation tools running in Microsoft Excel estimate potential energy savings when running variable speed drives instead of other pump control methods such as throttling
Benefit: Estimating energy cost savings and time for return on investment with ABB drives

Built-in PID controllers
Advantage: Accurate process control on the basis of actual need versus wasted power of less accurate process control
Feature: Two powerful, independent and built-in PID controllers for regulating pressure, flow or other quantities on the basis of the actual need
Benefits: Energy cost savings, quality of the process and goods, reduced maintenance, no need for external PID controller
© ABB Group April 23, 2023 | Slide 15
Built-in PID controllersPID sleep and sleep boost
Advantage: System operates only when needed
Feature: PID sleep is typically used to avoid many start/stop sequences of pumps and fans especially in level control and booster applications. PID sleep boost can be used to extend the PID sleep time
Benefits: Energy savings, less maintenance, increased system life time
© ABB Group April 23, 2023 | Slide 16
Pump and fan control (PFC)
Advantage: Built-in PFC feature can eliminate the need for an external programmable logic controller (PLC)
Feature: With PFC feature one drive is able to control several pumps or fans in parallel
Benefit: Cost saving of a reduced system component, simple system configuration
© ABB Group April 23, 2023 | Slide 17
Soft pump and fan control (SPFC)
Feature: SPFC feature softens start-up current while connecting auxiliary motors online. Enables lower pressure peaks in pumps/fans and pipelines
Advantage: Reduced mechanical stress in pipes and devices
Benefit: Longer life for pump/fan system and reduced maintenance costs
© ABB Group April 23, 2023 | Slide 18
Supervision of inlet/outlet pressure
Advantage: Integrated protection and control with pre-programmed drive feature
Feature: Supervision of inlet/outlet pressure (cavitation protection)
Benefit: Smoother processes and optimized system. Longer life for system components, reduced maintenance costs

Detection of under/overload
Advantage: Integrated protection and control with pre-programmed drive feature
Feature: User specified under/overload curves for detection of system failures such as belt wear and tear
Benefit: Reduced maintenance costs, smoother process and less off-times
© ABB Group April 23, 2023 | Slide 20
Pump cleaning function
Advantage: Prevent ragging up of pump’s impeller
Feature: Drive executes pre-programmed cleaning sequence for pump at start, when required, with supervision limit (i.e. current) or with digital input
Benefit: Reduced maintenance and repair costs
© ABB Group April 23, 2023 | Slide 21
Pipe fill function
Advantage: Reduced overpressure peaks in the system. Especially useful with booster pumps and irrigation applications
Feature: Pipe fill is a pre-programmed control method to start a pump system and fill the pipelines. Pipelines are filled smoothly with water before closed loop control is activated.
Benefit: Improved reliability. Reduced maintenance and repair costs
© ABB Group April 23, 2023 | Slide 22
Output current ratings
Advantage: Drive can be operated in ambient temperatures up to 50 °C without de-rating the output current
Feature: Full output current at 50 °C ambient temperature
Benefit: Optimized drive dimensioning for wide temperature range, simplified drive selection
© ABB Group April 23, 2023 | Slide 23
Serial communication
Advantage: Built-in serial communication interface as standard for system control and monitoring
