Time Recorders Service Manual and Parts Reference

This manual references the parts and service for Model 125 & 150 Recorders. Reference Service Manual 06-0115-000 Rev. “D” for clocks that have either metal front cases or back cases. Lubricant: Unless otherwise noted, use NLGI#0 grease for lubrication. I. Motor and Drive Assembly Lubricate the following areas twice a year:

1) The area of contact on Minute Drive Lever and the stud in the Minute Drive Cam. 2) Where the Minute Drive Lever contacts the Minute Shaft and Minute Shaft Bearing. 3) The pivotal points of the Feed and Detent Pawls.

The time recorders are driven by a 115volt AC, 60 cycle, 1rpm motor (240 volt AC, 50 cycles units are also available by request). The motor rotates the minute drive cam one revolution each minute. Accuracy of the recorder is based on the line frequency provided all the drive train parts are properly installed, adjusted and lubricated. These parts should be checked for wear and replaced as necessary. The motor rotates the Minute Drive Cam that turns and pushes down on the Minute Drive Lever allowing it to advance one minute. As the lever is compressed by the Minute Drive Cam the Minute Feed Pawls will advance the Minute Drive Ratchet one tooth allowing it to change the Minute Type Wheel with every revolution of the Minute Drive Cam. The Minute Drive Gear is secured to the Minute Drive Shaft by two set screws. The drive gear is adjusted to the gears of the Minute Type Wheel. When setting the drive gear to the Minute Type Wheel you must turn the Minute Wheel counter clockwise with the Drive Gear until it stops. At this point tighten the set screws in the Drive Gear. Note: If the Drive Gear is set too close against the Minute Type Wheel it could cause the Minute Wheel to bind and not turn properly. II. Typehead Assembly See Typehead Assembly Drawing III. Wheel Alignment To set the 24-Tooth Hour Ratchet to the Hour Wheel Shaft, manually advance the ratchet by actuating the Hour Follower Lever until the Day-Date Ratchet advances, then carefully rotate the Hour Wheel to "12" midnight or "0" Hour to the bottom center printing position and in line with the "00" minutes. Tighten set screws and check for binds or any misalignment. The Day-Date Wheel can now be set to the Hour Wheel. Align the Day-Date Wheel with the Hour and Minute Wheels and tighten the ratchet set screws making sure that the Day-Date Ratchet and the Hour Ratchet are not touching which could cause binding. Grease the Hour Drop-Off Cam on the Minute Wheel and the Day-Date Cam. Also apply a thin coat of grease to the 24, 28, or 31-Tooth Ratchets. This should be done twice per year. When it is necessary to remove the Type Wheels from the recorder, always clean and lightly oil the bearing surfaces upon re-assembly.

It will be necessary to periodically clean the Type Wheel printing surfaces. DO NOT USE A SOLVENT CLEANER as most solvents could eventually "gum-up" the Type Wheel Assembly. Brush the Type Wheels with a soft bristle brush to remove any buildup. If the recorder is a left print model (for left side of card registrations) an Intermediate Gear is fixed over the Minute Drive Wheel and should be carefully engaged so that it only engages the Minute Drive Wheel and not the Minute Drive Gear. A. Removing the Typehead Assembly 1. Remove Hour and Minute Hands. Notice that a lock washer is located behind the Minute Hand. The Hour Hand is attached to the Hour Hand Gear by means of a friction fit and can be removed with a gentle pulling and twisting motion.

a. Remove clock Dial Plate (1 nylon rivet each corner). b. Remove Ribbon c. Remove (4) screws attaching the Front Mounting Plate Assembly. d. Remove the Front Mounting Plate Assembly.

2. Remove four screws (2 on each side) to separate the Assembly Frame from Back Case. Lay Assembly Frame on bench face down and remove the four screws holding the Typehead in the Assembly Frame. One screw is under the Hammer Trip on the Model 125. Pulling down the Hammer will reveal this screw. This will separate the Typehead from Assembly Frame. B. Dismantling Typehead Assembly Due to the complexity of the Typehead we recommend replacing the Typehead Assembly instead of attempting repair in the field. Loosen the two set screws in the Day-Date and Hour Ratchets. Remove the E-Clip from the Detent Stud and remove the ratchets. Disconnect the Detent Spring from Detent Pawl and remove Detent Pawl. Lift Day-Date Follower Lever off the Detent Stud and disconnect the two springs from the Typehead Rear Plate. Remove the Stud Collar. Unhook the Detent Spring from Hour Detent Pawl and remove the Detent Pawl. Unhook two springs from the Hour Follower Lever and remove it. Loosen and remove the four Typehead Spacers. The Type Wheels can now be removed. Before the Type Wheels are separated, remove the set screw burrs on the Hour Wheel Shaft (Brass) and Day-Date Wheel Shaft (Steel) by lightly filing and sanding them smooth. Now the Type Wheels can be separated. There are three different Type Wheels (Day-Date, Hour and Minutes). The Day-Date Wheel has a solid ¼” steel shaft. The Hour Wheel has a brass shaft with a 1/4" hole in the center. The Minute, Tenths or Hundredths Wheels have a molded gear and cam on one side. The Month, Year and Symbol Wheel Bracket is mounted to the Front Plate with screws. C. Reassembling Typehead Due to the complexity of the Typehead we recommend replacing the Typehead Assembly instead of attempting repair in the field. Assemble the Day-Date, Hour and Minute wheels. Put one drop of oil on the tip of the Day-Date Wheel shaft. Place three .010” Shims on the shaft. Lightly grease the brass Hour Wheel shaft and assemble it to the Day-Date Wheel shaft. Place a .005” Shim on the Hour Wheel shaft then assemble the Minute Wheel to the Hour Wheel shaft and lightly grease the Minute Cam. Insert the tip of the shaft of this wheel assembly into the hole of the Rear Plate. Install the Typehead Front Plate and secure with four Short Typehead Spacers. All three Type Wheels should spin

freely. If there is any drag check for burrs. Flip the Typehead over and assemble the Hour Follower to the Lower Rear Plate Stud. Next assemble the Collar Stud and attach the Hour Spring from the Hour Lever to the Rear Plate hole. Now attach the Detent Spring from the Hour Pawl to the next Rear Plate hole. Assemble the 24-Tooth Hour Ratchet to the brass Hour Wheel shaft. Attach the Hour Pawl to the Upper Rear Plate stud. Attach the Hour Pawl Spring to the black Rear Plate stud and Hour Pawl. Insert the Day-Date Follower onto the Lower Rear Plate shaft. Use a .005” or .010 shim as necessary on the Upper Rear Plate Stud (to remove excess play) and secure with an E-Clip. Add the Day-Date Spring to the Day-Date Follower and connect it to the third Rear Plate hole. Add the Day-Date Detent Spring to the Day-Date Pawl and connect it to the last Rear Plate hole. Add the Hour Pawl to the Upper Rear Plate Stud. Attach a spring to the black Rear Plate Stud. Secure the Hour Pawl to the Stud with an E-Clip. The Hour Cam is a white plastic cam attached to the 24-Tooth Hour Ratchet. The 24-Tooth Hour Ratchet has to be in position so that the Hour Follower Lever will operate at 12:00 MIDNIGHT. Rotate the Minute Wheel counter clockwise until it stops. The Minute Wheel will stop when Hour Follower Lever bottoms on the Minute Cam. This will also position the Minute Wheel to be in a "00" printing position. Manually operate the Hour Follower Lever so the Hour Feed Pawl drops into the next tooth of the Ratchet. Release the Hour Follower Lever and the Hour Ratchet will advance one tooth. The Hour Detent Pawl should drop into the ratchet and have about .002" clearance. The Detent Pawl must drop into the ratchet. If the Minute Wheel is in the correct position and there still isn’t any clearance, adjust the Ratchet Pawl Stop Screw. Loosen the Hex Nut and unscrew the Ratchet Pawl Stop Screw about 1/2 turn. Tighten the Hex Nut. Too little clearance will cause binding of Hour Follower Lever resulting in the Typehead losing hours. Too much clearance will cause the hours to be out of alignment. Do not tighten both set screws -- this is a temporary adjustment. The Detent Pawl and Day-Date Follower Lever should have as little side clearance as possible yet be free of binds. There should be 1/16" clearance between the tab on the Day-Date Follower Lever and Hour Ratchet. Too little clearance will bind the Hour Ratchet and result in losing hours. Adjust for approx .002" clearance between the Detent Pawl and Ratchet. The Detent Pawl should be free on stud. If tight or binding you may have to remove the shim. When actuating the Hour Lever by hand it should operate from its own spring tension all the way around the Hour Ratchet. If binding occurs check for clearance between the ratchets. Also check for burrs on the Detent Pawl, ratchets or Type Wheels, and clearance between the Day-Date Detent Pawl and Day-Date Ratchet. If this does not correct the problem it may be necessary to replace the springs. There is a 1/4" hole in all Type Wheels that should be in alignment. When aligned the Minute Wheel should be at "00" position, the Hour Wheel at 12:00 MIDNIGHT position and the Day-Date Wheel should be at “Monday” or “1” depending on if it is a Day or Date Wheel. Hold the Type Wheels in position and use an Allen wrench to tighten the set screws in the Hour and Date Ratchets. If the Typehead has a Month Wheel install it and the Month Bracket. Leave the four Month Bracket Screws loose and align the wheel with the rest of the Type Wheels using a straight edge. Holding the Hour and Detent Pawl out of the way install the 24-Tooth Hour Ratchet. Install the Day-Date Follower Lever by connecting springs to Typehead Rear Plate. Install Shim Washer on stud and Day-Date Detent Pawl. Secure with an E- Clip. Connect the Detent Spring. Press firmly on the straight edge against the Type Wheels and tighten all four Screws in the Month Bracket.

D. Installing Typehead Assembly Install the Typehead in the Assembly Frame and tighten all four screws. Install the Front Plate Assembly -- be sure the set screws in Drive Gear are sitting at the “12:00” and “3:00” position(s). With the set screws in this position you can access both set screws to adjust the Minute Wheel. Rotate the Minute Wheel counter clockwise until it stops. This is the "00" minutes position. While holding the Minute Wheel in this position, install the Front Mounting Plate Assembly. Tighten the four mounting screws in the Front Mounting Plate Assembly. After the Plate has been installed insert the assembly into the Back Case and connect the motor wires. Install the print ribbon with the hex hole in Ribbon Spools to the rear of clock and round hole to the front. Loosen both set screws in the Minute Drive Gear and rotate the gear counter clockwise until it stops. This stop is the Hour Cam backing up to Hour Follower Lever. This will position the "00" Minute to print on the card. Hold a slight counter clockwise tension on Drive Gear and tighten both set screws in Drive Gear. Make sure the molded gear on the Minute Wheel and Minute Drive Gear are fully engaged. Also be sure the Drive Gear has minimal contact with the Minute Wheel -- this would cause binding in the Minute Wheel and Drive Assembly. Print a sample registration on a time card. Always align the other Type Wheels with the Minute Wheel. The Minute Wheel will always be the reference point for aligning other Type Wheels. Now the Minute Wheel is adjusted and tightened. Make another print registration and compare the printed hour to the printed minute. If the hour prints high or low it can be adjusted in the following manner: Use the Hour Follower Lever to advance the Hour Ratchet around until the set screw on Hour Ratchet comes into view on the left side of clock. Loosen the set screws in the Hour Ratchet and rotate the Hour Wheel up or down to correct printing. Tighten the set screws and make another print registration. Continue this adjustment until the hour print aligns with the minute print. Tighten both set screws in Hour Ratchet. Align the Day-Date Wheel in the same manner as Hour Wheel. The Day-Date Follower Lever is the yellow zinc plated lever. Month Adjustment: Year, Month and Symbol Wheels must be aligned two ways: (1) for dark or light printing, or (2) aligned with other Type Wheels.

1. Dark or light printing is corrected by moving the Year-Month Bracket up or down. A simple way to do this is to loosen the four screws in the Bracket and raise or lower bracket as needed. Tighten the four screws. Make a sample print – if print is light, readjust Year-Month Bracket. Continue to adjust the Year-Month Bracket until print output is optimized.

2. The Month Latch has an elongated mounting hole. Loosen the Month Latch Mounting Screw and slide the Month Latch to the left or right to adjust the alignment. Sometimes moving the Month Latch will not align the month printing. In that case, the Year-Month Bracket must be moved. Adjust the Year-Month Bracket to the left or right.

Repeat steps 1 & 2 until the Year-Month Bracket is properly aligned. IV. Hammer Installation and Trim Sometimes it is necessary to install a new Hammer when changing from three wheels to four wheels or when installing a Year or Symbol Wheel. The Hammer can be installed in the following manner: Remove Ribbon and loosen screws in Card Stop, and move Card Stop to the rear of clock. Remove the two screws from Card Table and remove Card Table. Remove Hex Nut from Hammer Trip Stud. Now the Hammer Assembly can be removed. Before installing the new Hammer Assembly you may need to trim approximately 1/8” from the back side of the Rubber Platen next to the minutes to avoid hitting the card stop. Grease the outside of the Hammer Trip Sleeve before installing. Install Hammer Assembly in clock and tighten nut on Hammer Trip Stud.

Install Hammer and Card Table, adjust Card Stop, and install Ribbon. Take a sample print on the time card. If print quality is not adequate the Platen may need to be trimmed around the minutes to remove “shadow print”. V. Model 150 Printing When a time card is inserted in the clock, the card will push the Card Finger and close the Microswitch. The Print Solenoid will energize and pull up both the Center Bar and the Print Hammer. The Contact Lever simultaneously releases the Microswitch Blade, opening the Microswitch and allowing the Center Bar to drop down so that the Ribbon Feed Finger will drive the Ribbon Ratchet. Notice that the Card Stop is recessed where the Card Finger travels. The Card Stop can be moved in or out to adjust the printing depth on the card. After adjusting the Card Stop the Card Finger will need to be readjusted. Left print recorders with more than three Type Wheels do not have this bar. VI. Preventive Maintenance Procedures

1. Remove the Front Case and the Ribbon. 2. Dust out the machine with a dusting brush or with compressed air if available. 3. Remove any grease build-up on the cams and ratchets by using a rag on the end of a

screwdriver blade. 4. Remove any ink build-up on the inside of the Card Table where the Ribbon slides back

and forth using a dry rag. 5. Make sure the Toggle Plate pivots easily and the Shoulder Screw is snug. 6. Put a drop of oil in the oil access hole found on top of the hubs supporting the left and

right Ribbon Shafts. 7. Grease the pivot point of the Trip Latch. 8. Grease each of the three studs that support the Center Bar. 9. The Center Bar should freely return upward after a registration is made. If there is

binding, check and remove grime and deposit buildup and re-lubricate. 10. Make sure all four set screws in the Typehead Assembly, the two set screws in both

Ribbon Reverse Ratchets and the two set screws in the Main Drive Gear are tight. 11. Make sure all four Assembly Frame screws, the four Month Bracket screws and the two

Microswitch screws are tight. 12. Check for excessive wear where the Minute Feed Pawl drives the Minute Drive Ratchet.

Replace the ratchet and pawl, if worn. 13. Look directly down behind the Dial to see if any of the parts mounted on the Front

Mounting Plate are touching the back of the Dial. If so, form the Dial out enough so that nothing touches it.

14. Install a new Ribbon. 15. Make sure the recorder is printing proper Day-Date and Time. 16. Put the Front Case back on the machine.

VII. Service Tips

A. Losing time (minutes). 1. Check 1 RPM motor with Second Hand on watch - Minute Drive Lever should

operate at the same second for 4 or 5 minutes. 2. Check travel on Minute Feed Pawl -- should be 1-1/4 teeth -- check for loose

Minute Feed Pawl Stop. More than 1-1/4 teeth travel will allow Minute Feed Pawl to jump a tooth in Minute Ratchet.

3. Binding Minute Wheel against Drive Gear. 4. Binding Hour Reduction Gears. 5. Minute Cam loose on motor -- set screw loose in Drive Gear.

6. Worn Minute Drive Cam Stud or worn Minute Drive Lever. Replace Front Plate Assembly.

7. Check parts for lubrication. 8. Ask User if they have experienced any power failures recently.

B. Losing time (hours). 1. Hour Ratchet set screws loose. 2. Hour Ratchet binding on Typehead Rear Plate. 3. Hour Detent Pawl binding -- not enough clearance.

C. Gaining time (minutes). 1. Minute Feed Pawl backing up two (2) teeth. 2. Minute Feed Pawl Stop Loose.

D. Gaining Time (hours) - Type Wheels one or more hours ahead of clock face. 1. The Hour Ratchet Pawl Stop screw loose -- causing hours to advance two hours

at a time. 2. Set Screws in Hour Ratchet loose, causing Hour Wheel to spin freely and appear

to gain time. 3. Binding Hour Detent Pawl.

E. Day or Date not changing. 1. Set screws in Day-Date Ratchet loose, causing Day-Date Wheel to spin freely. 2. Too much side-play in Day-Date Follower Lever. 3. Day-Date Detent Pawl binding -- not enough clearance. 4. Day-Date Pawl Stop screw too tight, not allowing pawl to advance. 5. Clock may be set 12 Hours off, Day-Date would appear to advance at noon

instead of midnight. F. Light or weak print.

1. Ribbon worn out or not reversing. G. Ribbon not reversing.

1. Too much tension on Ribbon Tension Spring. 2. Toggle Plate screw loose 3. Toggle Plate binding. 4. Finger Spring broken or disconnected. 5. Ribbon Drive Gear loose on shaft.

H. Center Bar Binding/Malfunction. 1. Check Guide Stud washers & E-clips. 2. Check Print Solenoid Pin and E-Clip. 3. Clock mounting surface not flat. 4. Center Bar Return Spring broken. 5. Sliding areas dry or gummy.

I. Glass Installation (Eye protection should be worn when installing/removing glass) 1. Remove cover and place face down on table. 2. Carefully remove any broken glass 3. Remove round push-on clips that retain the glass. Some of the plastic posts to

which the clips are attached may have to be cut off with pliers to remove the clips. Extra plastic posts are molded into the cover in case the original ones are damaged.

4. Lay replacement glass into cover and push on new clips to retain the glass. A nut driver works well for installing clips.

VIII. Electrical Caution: These clocks use high voltage AC. Only qualified service personnel should attempt repairs. A. Model 125 (120v/240v) AC power is directly wired to the 4-watt motor. If clock is not keeping time, check for the following conditions:

• No power at outlet – reset circuit breaker. • Faulty Motor – replace motor.

• Faulty Power Cord or Power Cord to Motor wire connector – replace.

B. Model 125 (6-volt & 12-volt) Battery Power

• Make sure batteries are fresh and properly installed. • Make sure battery voltage is present at the blue (-) and yellow (+) wires at the circuit

board

• Make sure that 5vDC is present on the orange and gray wires at the circuit board once every minute for about 3 seconds. If yes and motor does not start turning - replace motor. If no - replace printed circuit board.

• If motor does not turn full cycle to advance time check for defective Microswitch and

replace.

C. Model 125 Rechargeable Battery Power

• Make sure batteries are fully charged and properly installed • If batteries are not charging:

1) Check power at the wall and for AC voltage on purple wires, if none check connections from power cord.

2) If AC present, batteries may need to be replaced or printed circuit board may be

defective – replace.

• Make sure battery voltage is present at the blue (-) and yellow (+) wires at the circuit board.

• Make sure that 5vDC is present on the orange and gray wires at the circuit board once

every minute for about 3 seconds. If yes and motor does not start turning - replace motor. If no - replace printed circuit board.

• If motor does not turn full cycle to advance time check for defective Microswitch and

replace.

D. Model 150 (120v/240v) AC power is directly wired to the 3-watt motor. If clock is not keeping time, check for the following conditions:

• No power at outlet – reset circuit breaker.

• Faulty Motor – replace motor.

• Faulty Power Cord or Power Cord to Motor wire connector – replace. AC power is also wired directly to the Microswitch and AC Rectifier. Power routes through the Microswitch to an AC Rectifier and then to the Print Solenoid. If the automatic punch is not functioning, check for the following conditions:

• No power at outlet – reset circuit breaker.

• Faulty Power Cord or wiring to the AC Rectifier, Microswitch or Print Solenoid.

• Check for loose connections on AC Rectifier and Microswitch. For the next portion of the test, remove the upper and lower connections of the AC Rectifier before applying power.

• Close Microswitch by inserting a time card. Check for AC power voltage on the left and right terminals of the AC Rectifier. If not, the problem is most likely a faulty Microswitch – replace both the Microswitch Bracket Assembly and Rectifier.

• Check for DC voltage between 85vDC and 120vDC for a 120volt clock or between

170vDC and 240vDC for a 240v clock. If not, replace the AC Rectifier.
