Welcome to the first edition for 2013 of PACE, the official ACPE Alumni Newsletter.

I hope the first part of your new year has been exciting and rewarding. Mine certainly has. I began in 2013 as Head of College for ACPE after relocating from Western Australia.

There are many positive changes planned and being developed for ACPE this year. Integral to these changes will be a close association and direct input from our Alumni. I have already heard many great things about our Alumni and look forward to meeting many of you in the near future in pursuing avenues to develop this communication.

hEAD OF COLLEGE WELCOME

ACPE CELEBRAtEs 95 YEARs!

ACPE’s 95th anniversary evening was a tremendous success with many Alumni, Staff, ex-staff and members of the Swords Club in attendance on the night.

The evening began with drinks and canapés on the pitch of ANZ stadium and an official welcome by Warren Jacobson, Managing Director Australasia. The big screens on the pitch scrolled through 95 years of ACPE photos, a real highlight for many of our alumni in attendance.

The night was a journey through ACPE’s history and opened with a fencing demonstration by the Sydney Swords Club. The ACPE Dance Company followed with their performance of ‘Underbelly’.

We were lucky enough to have four alumni speakers on the night, providing insight into what life at ACPE was like throughout time and the changes that have taken place.

To conclude the evening, we officially re-launched the ACPE Hall of Fame. In doing so, we have made a commitment to open nominations on an annual basis and induct up to two inductees annually. Further details of our 2012 inductees can be found in this newsletter.

Thank you to all who were in attendance on the night and for those who contributed to making this night such a great success. We are now looking forward to celebrations for 100 years!

ACPE officially celebrated its 95th anniversary in style with an event held at ANZ stadium on Saturday 20th October 2012.

One of my goals for ACPE is to expand the essence of the College through renewed involvement of, and with, ACPE Alumni. I believe it is important to continue the growth of Alumni involvement within the College, as they are an essential part in sharing and growing the family and the soul of the College with current students. Along with our students and staff our Alumni are the key Ambassadors for ACPE.

There will be many opportunities in the near future for you to be involved in the exciting changes that will be taking place at ACPE. I open the door for you to contact me with your ideas in how we can further develop our Alumni.

CuLtuRAL EXPERiEnCE PROGRAMDue to the resounding success of the first ACPE Cultural Experience Program (CEP) in 2011, this program is now an annual event on the ACPE calendar!

Taking place in November each year, the Cultural Experience Program raises much needed funds for the Cambodian Children’s Fund (CCF). The program involves 15 ACPE students and 3 staff members travel to CCF in Phnom Penh, Cambodia representing ACPE.

The group volunteers for three weeks, delivering programs for both children and their teachers in the following: Structured sporting lessons for the children, Teaching sporting programs to the passionate teachers to increase their skills; First Aid courses to senior students and to staff; and assisting with the meal program that provides a guaranteed nightly meal for individuals as young as four from the community to access.

thE COLLEGEunLEAsh YOuR GREAtnEss CAMPAiGnIn the build-up to Semester 1, ACPE launched their 2013 campaign; entitled ‘Unleash Your Greatness’.

This campaign was about promoting excellence at ACPE and using our current students as the ‘face’ of the campaign. The aim was to inspire prospective students to make sport and dance their life and unleash their greatness with a degree from ACPE.

You may have seen this campaign around Sydney through TV, Cinema, Radio, Live Australian Open Tennis Screenings in the CBD or shopping mall advertisements.

are donated to CCF at the conclusion of the trip, allowing for continued learning and opportunities to be physically active.

Whilst in Cambodia, the ACPE students also have the opportunity to experience the culture and history of Cambodia.

The ACPE CEP is a rewarding experience that opens the student’s eyes to a whole world beyond their own in Australia. The students are able to use their skills and knowledge gainedin their studies and put it into practice in an unfamiliar environment, dealing with external factors that they may never experience in Australia.

ACPE has received great support for this program and it would not be as successful if not for the kind and generous donations from our sponsors. As a result of this overwhelming support, ACPE raised $23,000 in 2012!

ACPE was allowed to choose a program within CCF to donate these funds. The decision was made to use the funds to

ACPE PAREnts EVEninGOn Thursday 17th January, ACPE held its inaugural parents information evening in preparation for Sem 1, 2013.

Parents are key influencers in the decision making process of our prospective students and ACPE recognised the need to have a parents only evening where we could provide information on ACPE and also answer any questions they might have about the College and their childs future studies.

The evening entailed speakers from the CDO, ADO and Student Services and we were privileged enough to have a recent graduate and her mother speak at the event and provide first hand insight.

The event was a resounding success with over 60 in attendance.

build 2 play areas for children within the community of Stueng Meanchay, where poverty is clear and where many of the children were working on the garbage dumps before being rescued by CCF and provided the opportunity of formal education and improved health conditions.

These two projects tie in well with the identity of ACPE as the benefits include increased opportunities for the children to be physically active and learn that being active is enjoyable and to incorporate it in their daily lives.

Through supporting CCF, the ACPE community of students, staff, alumni, family and friends should be extremely proud of the positive impact they have made in the lives of many individuals in Cambodia

ACPE OLYMPiAnsHome spun Olympians and ACPE students, Aidan Roach and Simone Kennedy were guests of honour at a Civic Reception hosted by Ryde City Mayor Ivan Petch on January 23 in the Council Chambers.

The event – which was held in conjunction with the Ryde Sports Foundation – recognised the meritorious performances of Australian Sharks water polo sensation Roach and silver medal-winning Paralympic cyclist Kennedy at the 2012 London Games.

Aidan, who is back home in East Ryde on a break from his stint with the VK Budva club in the Adriatic Water Polo League in Montenegro, helped the Sharks finish a creditable ninth in London.

Ryde cyclist Simone, who has left sided hemiplegia, captured the imagination of the sporting public when she brought home a silver medal after finishing runner up to China’s Sini Zeng in the 3km pursuit.

They are pictured above with Ryde City Mayor Ivan Petch; Ryde Sports Foundation chairman Jim Hull and executive members Neita Matthews, Rob Wilkinson and TWT Sports Editor Chris Karas; Australian Olympic Committee stalwart Helen Brownlee and Australian Paralympic Committee’s NSW Development Co-ordinator Kara Retford.

Jon McPhee, now a graduate of ACPE, was given the opportunity of a lifetime to travel with key players and staff from the Bulldogs, to work in a small PNG community delivering key health messages and assisting in building much needed facilities. As the national sport in PNG, Rugby League was used as the vehicle whereby Jon and the Bulldogs made school visits to raise

awareness of HIV and domestic violence, alongside the NRL’s Eat Well Play Well Stay Well, Dream Believe Achieve program.

The visit also saw the repair of the rundown Lemakot health clinic and the delivery of preventative and remedial physiotherapy training to health workers.
