It combines high density fiberglass mat with a mass-loaded vinyl sandwiched between a weatherproof jacketing. Introduction: INSULTECH® Acoustic Blankets are a custom fit high quality pre-engineered insulation blanket system designed to reduce harmful noise levels and improve the surrounding work environment. INSULTECH® is also capable of withstanding weather and chemical environments. INSULTECH® is flexible and easy to remove and reinstall allowing quick access and easy equipment serviceability. Common Applications and Markets served: INSULTECH® Acoustic Blanket Applications include; Low Temperature Process Piping, Pump Housings, Valves, Liquid Chillers, Fittings, Compressor Housings, Fan and Blower Housings, Flow Meters and Piping/Ducting. INSULTECH® Acoustic Blanket Markets include; OSHA Required Sound Limits on Equipment, HVAC Commercial, Process Industrial Markets and OEM Original Equipment Manufacturers. Maximum Service Temperature: This design is to act as a “SOUND ATTENUATION”, and Thermal Barrier, with a maximum service temperature of 180 F (82 C). Product Components: The Outer and Inner Jacket is an 18.0 oz/sq. yd. Vinyl Coated Polyester Fabric. The Insulation Material is an 11PCF Fiberglass Needled Mat-Type “E” Fiber, which acts as a sound “Absorber”. Barium Sulfate Loaded Vinyl Sheet (1lb/sf to 2lb/sf Surface Mass) is layered onto the Insulation Mat to act as a “Reflector” of sound. The “Reflector” and “Absorber” materials are encapsulated by the Vinyl Coated Polyester Fabric jacketing and sewn together, producing a self contained blanket system. The INSULTECH® Blanket System includes fasteners for easy install and removal. Blanket Construction Blanket construction shall be double sewn lock stitch with a minimum 7 stitches per inch. Raw jacket edges will have a tri-fold PTFE Teflon® cloth binding. No raw cut jacket edge will be exposed. Stitching will be done with PTFE Teflon® coated fiberglass thread. Blanket Overlap To improve sound efficiency, the blanket will extend beyond mating flanges unto existing insulation for a minimum of 2”. Where blanket cannot fit over existing oversized insulation, blanket will butt up to existing insulation with a friction fit closing seam. All sections of pipes will be insulated and open gaps are not acceptable. Blanket diameters which are 2” or larger than existing insulation must be end capped to eliminate open air void. Leak Accommodations To accommodate a leak and detect its origin, blankets will have a low point stainless steel or brass drain grommet or the design must incorporate a mating seam at the lowest point of the blanket.

4 – 8 dBA Reduction Blanket Insulation Weight When designing blanket insulation for large equipment where a multi-piece construction is necessary, the total number of pieces will be minimized. Any one piece will not exceed 40 lbs. in weight. I.D. Plate For easy identification, a stainless steel or aluminum nameplate tag will be riveted to each blanket piece. With 1/8” embossed lettering, the nameplate will show; item location, description, size, pressure rating and tag number sequence. Each blanket will require a tag. Quilting Pins To enhance blanket quality and to maintain uniform thickness, Stainless Steel quilting pins will be placed at random locations no greater than 18 inches apart. Quilting pins will prevent shifting of the insulation. Stainless Steel speed washers will secure the quilting pin stem in place. Minimized Air Void Equipment and equipment heads are typically a multi-piece design and are installed in tag number sequence. Compressor Housings, large vessel flanges and pump housings will be designed in two half sections. Blanket design will conform to the equipment with minimized air void. All valve covers will be a two piece design with a separate body and bonnet. Minimized Acoustic Void Leaks All blanket pieces which match mating seams and expose hot spots, will include a 2” PTFE/Septum flap to cover the exposed seam and minimize potential noise leaks.

STANDARD FASTENER ( Wiretwists & Velcro® Flaps ) A 20 gauge stainless steel wire will be doubled up and twisted in a spiral fashion, with a minimum of 4 to 5 twists per inch. Wiretwist length will be 16” or longer. The Wiretwist will be secured to the lacing pin at the pin stem. Lacing pin stems will be 14 gauge. Wiretwists will be spaced 6” on center along closing seams with matching lacing pins to lace and secure to. Velcro® hook-and-loop fasteners are sewn to an outer jacketing flap. A 2” wide hook will be stitched to the blanket and a 2” wide loop will be stitched to an extended outer jacketing flap. The flap design will include vinyl material to minimize “Hot Spots”. FASTENING OPTIONS 1) Lacing Pins - Stainless Steel Type 304 Lacing Pins. These pins will be 14 gauge. Location of pins on the blanket will be 2” or more from blanket edge and 8” or less from centerline to centerline along the blanket edge. 2) Metal “D” Ring Strap with Velcro® Tab - A multi layer fabric strap is double sewn. One strap is a 18” long pull down strap, the other is a 4” long stationary strap. Both straps are stitched to the outer jacketing of the blanket. The stationary strap includes a metal “D” Ring measuring 1.50” in width and placed 1⁄2” from the closing seam edge. The pull-down strap is placed 3” in from the closing seam edge. Both matching straps are spaced along the closing seam edge no greater than 8” apart along the blanket. The pull-down strap includes hook-and-loop Velcro®, measuring at least 1” wide by 6” long, and is box stitched to the strap surface. All closing seams have a 1.5” extended vinyl fabric flap, which is placed along the stationary strap side of the closing seam. 3) Side Release Buckles - The blanket fasteners will be 1 1/2” Polypropylene Side Release Buckles with 1.5” wide Fabric Straps. A tri-fold 1.5” (finished width) belt will be sewn together utilizing PTFE 3 ply thread. A row of stitching, along each side of the belt will be parallel for the entire length. The Buckle strap will be a minimum of 7” long and will be box stitched to the outer surface for a minimum of 5” in length. Upon receipt of project contract, each and every item must be accurately measured for retrofitting to existing field conditions and tagged with an aluminum or stainless steel identification tag showing an item number for installation reference. At the time of installation, blankets must have corresponding item number shown on the blanket tag and must match to existing tagging on fitting. No standard blanket designs will be accepted. This will assure accurate noise reduction performance. Introduction INSULTECH® Acoustic Blankets are a custom fit high quality pre-engineered insulation blanket system designed to reduce harmful noise levels and improve the surrounding work environment. INSULTECH® is also capable of withstanding weather and chemical environments. INSULTECH® is flexible and easy to remove and reinstall allowing quick access and easy equipment serviceability. Common Applications and Markets served INSULTECH® Acoustic Blanket Applications include; Compressors, Motor Housings, Blowers, Rotary Chillers, Gear Boxes, Compressor Housings, Piping and Fittings, Pump Housings and Fan Housings. INSULTECH® Acoustic Blanket Markets include; OSHA Required Sound Limits on Equipment, HVAC Commercial, Process Industrial Markets and OEM Original Equipment Manufacturers. Maximum Service Temperature This design is to act as a “SOUND ATTENUATION” and Thermal Barrier, with a maximum service temperature of 450 F (232 C). Product Components The Outer and Inner Jacketing is a 16.5 oz/sq. yd. PTFE Teflon® Impregnated Fiberglass Cloth. The Insulation Material is an 11PCF Fiberglass Needled Mat-Type “E” Fiber, which acts as a sound “Absorber”. Barium Sulfate Loaded Vinyl Sheet (1lb/sf to 2lb/sf Surface Mass) is layered onto the Insulation Mat to act as a “Reflector” of sound. The “Reflector” and “Absorber” materials are encapsulated by the PTFE Teflon® Cloth Jacketing and sewn together, producing a self contained blanket system. The INSULTECH® Blanket System includes fasteners for easy install and removal.

Application & Specification Guidelines The Blanket System is designed and has been tested to compare the sound pressure levels measured when a constant sound source was enclosed with four different samples of INSULTECH® Blanket Systems. From this data, both the insertion loss and the a-weighted noise reduction for each of these samples could be calculated. See results on page three. Blanket Construction Blanket construction shall be a double sewn lock stitch with a minimum of 7 stitches per inch. Raw jacket edges will have a tri-fold PTFE Teflon® cloth binding. No raw cut jacket edge will be exposed. Stitching will be done with pure Teflon® thread.

Blanket Overlap To minimize heat loss from fittings, the blanket will extend beyond mating flanges unto existing insulation for a minimum of 2”. Where blanket cannot fit over existing oversized insulation, blanket will butt up to existing insulation with a friction fit closing seam. All sections of pipes will be insulated and open gaps are not acceptable. Blanket diameters which are 2” or larger than existing insulation must be end capped to eliminate open air void. Leak Accommodations To accommodate a leak and detect its origin, blankets will have a low point stainless steel or brass drain grommet or the design must incorporate a mating seam at the lowest point of the blanket. Blanket Insulation Weight When designing blanket insulation for large equipment where a multi-piece construction is necessary, the total number of pieces will be minimized. Any one piece will not exceed 40 lbs. in weight. I.D. Plate For easy identification, a stainless steel or aluminum nameplate tag will be riveted to each blanket piece. With 1/8” embossed lettering, the nameplate will show; item location, description, size, pressure rating and tag number sequence. Each blanket will require a tag. Quilting Pins To enhance blanket quality and to maintain uniform thickness, stainless steel quilting pins will be placed at random locations no greater than 18 inches apart. Quilting Pins will prevent shifting of the insulation. Stainless Steel speed washers will secure the quilting pin stem in place. Minimized Air Void Equipment and equipment heads are typically a multi-piece design and are installed in tag number sequence. Blanket design will conform to the equipment with minimized air void. All valve covers will be a two piece design with a separate body and bonnet. Minimized Acoustic Void Leaks All blanket pieces which match mating seams and expose hot spots, will include a 2” PTFE/Septum flap to cover the exposed seam and minimize potential noise leaks. STANDARD FASTENER (Wiretwists & Velcro® Flaps) A 20 gauge stainless steel wire will be doubled up and twisted in a spiral fashion, with a minimum of 4 to 5 twists per inch. Wiretwist length will be 16” or longer. The Wiretwist will be secured to the lacing pin at the pin stem. Lacing pin stems will be 14 gauge. Wiretwists will be spaced 6” on center along closing seams with matching lacing pins to lace and secure to. Velcro® hook-and-loop fasteners are sewn to an outer jacketing flap. A 2” wide hook will be stitched to the blanket and a 2” wide loop will be stitched to an extended outer jacketing flap. The flap design will include vinyl material to minimize “Hot Spots”. FASTENING OPTIONS 1) Lacing Pins - Stainless Steel Type 304 Lacing Pins. These pins will be 14 gauge. Location of pins on the blanket will be 2” or more from blanket edge and 8” or less from centerline to centerline along the blanket edge. 2) Metal “D” Ring Strap with Velcro® Tab - A multi layer fabric strap is double sewn. One strap is a 18” long pull down strap, the other is a 4” long stationary strap. Both straps are stitched to the outer jacketing of the blanket. Leak Accommodations To accommodate a leak and detect its origin, blankets will have a low point stainless steel or brass drain grommet or the design must incorporate a mating seam at the lowest point of the blanket. Blanket Insulation Weight When designing blanket insulation for large equipment where a multi-piece construction is necessary, the total number of pieces will be minimized. Any one piece will not exceed 40 lbs. in weight. I.D. Plate For easy identification, a stainless steel or aluminum nameplate tag will be riveted to each blanket piece. With 1/8” embossed lettering, the nameplate will show; item location, description, size, pressure rating and tag number sequence. Each blanket will require a tag. Quilting Pins To enhance blanket quality and to maintain uniform thickness, stainless steel quilting pins will be placed at random locations no greater than 18 inches apart. Maximum Service Temperature This design is to act as a “SOUND ATTENUATION” and Thermal Barrier, with a maximum service temperature of 1000˚F (538˚C). Product Components The Outer Jacketing is a 17.0 oz/sq. yd. PTFE Teflon® Impregnated Fiberglass Cloth enclosed by .011” Dia. Type S.S. 304 Knitted Mesh. The Insulation Material is an 11PCF Fiberglass Needled Mat-Type “E” Fiber, which acts as a sound “Absorber”. Barium Sulfate Loaded Vinyl Sheet (1lb/sf to 2lb/sf Surface Mass) is layered onto the Insulation Mat to act as a “Reflector” of sound. The “Reflector” and “Absorber” materials are encapsulated by a .002″ thick Stainless Steel type 304 sheet foil enclosed by .011” Dia. 1.) How do I add two or more sound levels?

Sound levels, measured in dB, represent a logarithmic ratio which cannot simply be added or subtracted without lengthy calculations. Tosimplify this, follow the below chart:

Adding two sound levels:

1. Subtract the lower level from the higher level.2. Find the correction below.3. Add the correction to the higher sound level.

Example: 80 dB + 81 dB = 81 + 2.6 = 83.6 dB

Adding multiple sound levels:

1. Place all levels in groups of 2.2. Calculate the overall levels for each pair, using the method above.3. Repeat step 1 until all values represent a single overall dB.

Example: Add 80 dB, 89 dB, 86 dB, 85 dB, 88 dB and 85 dB.

2.) Is a 7 dB overall reduction good?

Since decibels represent a logarithmic ratio, the before and after sound pressure levels cannot be simply expressed as a percent reduction.The absolute reduction in dB, regardless of the levels, can be determined using the following chart:

Therefore, a 7 dB reduction represents a 55% sound pressure level reduction.

3.) Does sound pressure decrease with distance?

As the distance between the source and the receptor increases, the sound pressure decreases. In fact, each time the distance is doubled,the sound intensity decreases by 3 dB. Please refer to the chart below to determine the sound level decrease. Also note that 3’ away from thesource is the standard measuring distance.

4.) What is the difference between dB and dBA?

Decibels, abbreviated dB, are a logarithmic unit for expressing sound power and sound pressure levels. A-weighting this unit, referred to asdBA, adjusts the low and high frequency levels to more closely approximate the human ear’s response to noise. This scale is based on a child’shearing.

To convert dB to dBA, simply subtract the following corrections for each frequency using the following table:

About Industrial Noise

Many years ago, a noisy workplace meant a productive workplace. Industrial workers assumed that the noise levels were just part of theirjobs. Multi Stage Centrifugal Compressors, Piping, Coolers & Gearbox

Machine 1 - Atlas 3 Stage Compressor

Centrifugal Air CompressorsThis case study was performed on 2 each multi-stage centrifugal

air compressors. Using a sound pressure level meter, an ambientdBA reading of 94 dBA was taken in the utilities powerhouse. Thisreading was of equal distance to both compressors thirty feet apart.In addition, readings were taken 3 feet from each machine at variouslocations around the compressors.

Sound ReadingsReadings were taken before and after installation of INSULTECH

Acoustic Blanket Insulation while both compressors were at full load.Using a 1.5” inch thick design LT-450A-TT, blanket insulationperformance varied as shown below.

Additional Sound SourcesThe two centrifugal air compressors were accompanied by lower

level contributing sources from five other reciprocating compressorssmaller in size and output. The Joy and Atlas Compressors representedthe majority of sound source. However, significant levels still remain dueto other related equipment.

Quick and Easy Blanket InstallationBlankets were custom fit to match existing surface conditions.

Installation was simple and quick. All blankets were tagged with anumerical sequence corresponding to an installation assembly drawing.Blankets included Velcro flap fasteners and stainless steel wiretwists.Blankets were designed to be removed and reinstalled at any time.Installation assembly drawings were provided for future reference toindividual blanket location.

Hydraulic Pump Motor StudyPerformed on a hydraulic pump and motor housing assembly

located in an equipment room, the sound pressure level meterreading resulted in an ambient sound reading of 91.1 dBA.

Pump Motor Blanket Application This INSULTECH Acoustic Blanket Insulation was designed and

manufactured to insulate the motor housing surface, pump housing surfaceand connecting shroud.

Source ReadingsSource readings were taken at approximately 24” inches from the

actual equipment surface plane, before and after being fitted withINSULTECH Blanket Insulation. This estimate was based on the minimalavailable reading (90.0 dBA) from the meter used.

Final ReadingThe final motor housing reading showed a minor reduction due to

the fact that the motor housing vent ports were located on the side ofthe motor. These ports could not be covered. The blanket designconstruction included an extended Velcro flap fastening system on allclosing seams. Conduit and bracketing was accommodated for in theblanket design. Both the motor housing and pump housing were designedin two half section pieces.

Screw Compressor Discharge Line & Oil Separator

Compressor Discharge LineStudy

This case study was performed on 2 each CompressorDischarge Lines connected to Vertical Oil Separators. Using adigital sound pressure level meter with a 1/3 Octave Band Filter,ambient as well as source readings were taken around thecompressor skids as well as ambient readings.

Source ReadingsTaken at approximately 36” from the compressor skid

framework around the entire machine and 36” from the floor, themain objective was met: to lower the mechanical room ambientlevel to meet the same levels metered at the other side of themechanical room. In addition, it was determined that a “Pure Tone”existed, which added to the overall sound problem.

Acoustic Blanket SystemSolution

INSULTECH Acoustic Blanket Systems were customdesigned, manufactured and installed to treat 2 each of 4 eachVilter Rotary Screw Compressor Discharge Lines as well asmatching Vertical Oil Separators. Blankets were designed to

accommodate brackets, clearance conflicts, braces, supports andother surface penetrations after determining the highest soundlevels radiated from the machine components. Blanket pieces weresupplied with identification tags as well as all necessary fastenerhardware. Following an Installation Assembly Drawing, pieces wereinstalled in tag number sequence. All closing seams included aVelcro Fastener Flap for better sound performance.

Target Performance ResultsThe treatment included 25 blanket pieces per skid assembly,

installed within the allotted time frame of 32 man-hours. Sound sourcereadings were taken before and after installation with calculated overallaverages, resulting in an overall 9 DBA reduction average before andafter readings. Additional ambient readings were taken 25 LF from theskid with a measured reading of 95 DBA Before Treatment and 89.5DBA After Treatment. This measurement was well within the matchedambient reading taken on the other side of the mechanical room. Thetarget performance of less than 9 DBA met the objective. The “PureTone” was also removed from the sound makeup as a result of theAcoustic Blanket Treatment.

Engine Exhaust ApplicationThis case study was performed on a series of reciprocating

engine exhausts located in a gas compressor station. Using asound pressure level meter, an ambient dBA reading of 83 dBAwas taken between two engine exhaust pipes located outside thecompressor building near the silencers.

Sound ReadingsReadings were taken 3 feet away from the piping, expansion

joints and silencer of randomly chosen engines, before and afterINSULTECH Blanket Insulation had been installed. Using a 2 1/2”thick blanket design with 1 lb loaded vinyl, performance varied asshown in the table below.

Although an octave band filter was not available for determiningactual frequency concentrations, dBA readings were taken, providing agood indication of overall source levels. The general sound level was alow frequency which makes sound reduction more difficult. However, theresulting performance is still noteworthy.

Custom Fit to Assembly DrawingINSULTECH Blanket Insulation was custom fit to existing field

conditions. The blankets were fitted onto piping, flanged expansion joints,elbows, engine manifold transitions and engine silencers. Installation wasmade easy with stainless steel wiretwist fasteners provided on allblanket pieces. All pieces were tagged with an aluminum identificationtag which corresponded to an installation assembly drawing. Thisdrawing has been filed and can be used for future reference in the eventthat blankets must be removed.

Insultech ApplicationThis case study was performed on a Trane Model 255-300

Rotary Screw Liquid Chiller. INSULTECH Acoustic Blanket Insula-tion was used to treat various components of the machine,determined to be major sound sources. These machine compo-nents included: the motor housing, compressor housing and thecompressor discharge piping and isolation valve to the condenser.

Sound Pressure Level ReadingsTaken before and after INSULTECH Acoustic installation,

the machine was running at 60 % load at each reading. Anambient reading taken to determine the influence of outsidesources concluded that an HVAC axial fan contributed to thehigh ambient sound reading. All remaining equipment had littleor no influence.

Machine PositionSound readings were taken 2 LF from the machine surface

plane and 3 LF from the concrete floor. The machine waspositioned in the corner of the room with another Trane Chillerpositioned adjacent to the one metered. All readings were takenalong the same 2 LF surface plane around the machine in the Aweighting measurement.
