For the fourth time in the course of her long and prosperous reign the Queen of England has.been made the object of ?>.n attack by a madman— for it appears that the wretch Mc- Lean, like his predecessors in crime, is a crank, and will probably be dealt with as such. The telegraph give? us little more than the bare state- ment that on Thursday last, the Queen wfta, -I-^avWigr-W for the Castle, McLean fired one shot, at the royal carriage, and attempted to fire a second, when a bystander wrenched the pistol from his hands. Fortunately the ball, although aimed in the right direct-ion, traveled too high to achieve the miserable wretch*? object, and through the intervention of a wise Providence the Queen of England is yet spared to guard and watch over the interests of her sub- jects who love her so well. The in- cident has been promptly utilized by the President and his Cabinet to show our relatives on the other side that we arc not insensible to the kind sympathy evinced for us in our great sorrow, and the press of the country has more than seconded the action of the higher powers. Darling, of Oak Valley, to Miss Emma McMahn, of this place. Congratulations, and a ball at the Lake House to-night (March 6th) in honor of the event. F. MANTBR, CASS COUNTY. Weather is warm and snow nearly gone. II. 13. Morrison is now booming Shell Lake, preparatory for driving season. A railroad to start from Brainerd and pass through our section of country to Red Lake, is the principle topic just now. Rawson & Hocfcing's machine house is now under construction, which adds much to the looks of our little vil- lage. S. P. A couple of would-be darkies on >ur streets to-night, artistically ar- rayed; Sambo and Pete, apostles of Oscar Wilde, we anticipate. A. R. Gill's school closed out last Friday and li# is a free lad again. A release from four month's hard worjc in the school-room seems very good and acceptable. We are p.lmost disgusted with the March climate here, but we reckou it is owing to the mean temperature. It is quite generally understood that' some of our young Stowe Prairie girls are about to leave the state. Well, good-by, ladies. We neglected to say that they simply intend to enter tlier state of matrimony. Ta, to. Men are returning to the tie camps. Now, if it should turn in and rain all the snow off to-morrow or yesterday, wouldn't somebody "be tear?'' We should always love our sisters better than anybody else's, but how unnatural it seems to us*. Well, we suppose you folks are all a-courting now. Doesn't it remind you of earlier days and rorae sweet circumstances? We are just now informed that tito thunder last Saturday went south. So you may expect milder weather pret- ty lately. Life should be a constant growth. Growth in wisdom, virtue, culture, mental and moral as well as physical, but be careful not to develop the head too much, as a moderate-sized head is I preferable to the "big head." A lecture at the school-house last Thursday evening on "The Way to be Happy," phrenological. The lec- turer felt of our "bumps,'* and as the delineations were rather complimen- tary) we suppose he knew something about us. VERNON. Excerpts. Good House and Good Barn attached. Graham went out to Fergus and proved up on his claim, and is now quite happy, Harry Presson is around with his organs. Mr. Shaw has bought an instrument. It is a fine one. We understand he has sold one also to Mr. C. F. Mason. Commissioner Crocker has gone to Fergus with a crazy man, of Oak Val- ley. We have been unable to learn kis name. Next Tuesday is our town meeting, but as this will not be printed until it is over, we will not write anything about it this week. Next week we will tell the result of the election. Well, here I come, fresh again. We have just about astonished the natives. Why? Because we have bid farwell to whiskey, and come down to tea, coffee, and such. Per- haps some think "Skimy" will back- slide, but if he does it will not be be- hind a wood pile, nor in the back room of some saloon. There is one thing, I do not throw any blame on the saloon keepers for my bad bum- ming, for some of them have advised me to let strong drink alone, and one told a friend of mine if I would let it alone for a year he would give me ten dollars. Now I am not going to lecture on temperance, for every man knows his own business when sober, but when I took off my coat, vest and hat, and hung them on a hitching post and danced around it, I was not sober. I could tell more about my- self, but I want to put it in by littles so it will last longer. At this you must not whine, It's farewell to whisky and wine. HUB. V ERND AIIK. Dear Mr. Vennojr: Won't you please send us a warm wave now? This is too cold for anything. The 4th "of March, 1881, the day of Garfield's inauguration, was a cold and stormy one. Just one year from that date, Saturday, was another. We suppose superstitious folks will shake their heads at thought of this. That new company of Montanaites will light out next week. Bully for the Yellowstone, and good luck to all the fortune-seekers in that far off land. Mrs. Rosbrook has been quite ill, but is a little better at this writing. Dr. Babcock is attendiag physician. More business changes are liable to occur at anv time. A Hartford (Coan.) man was de- nouncing newspaper advertising to a crowd of listeners. "Last week," said lie, "I had an umbrella stolen from the vestibule of the church. It was a gift, and valu- ing it very highly, I spent double the worth in advertising, but I have not recovered it." "How did you word the advertise- ment?" asked a merchant. "Here it is," said the man, produc- ing a slip cut from a newspaper. The merchant took it, and read: "Lost from the vestibule of the church last S nlay evening, a black silk umbrella. The gentleman who took it will handsomely re- warded by le?ving it at No. Sare Fernando street." "Now. said the merchant, "I am il- liberal advertiser, and have always found it paid me well. A great dear depends upon the manner in which an advertisement^ is put. Let us try for your umbrella again, and if you do not then acknowledge that advertis- ing pays, 1 will purchase you a new one." The merchant then took a slip of paper from his pocket and wrote: "If the man who was seen to take an umbrella from the vestibule of the church last Sunday does not wish to get into trouble, and have a staii* cast upon the Christian character which he values so highly, he will return it at once to 2fo. San Fer-- nando street. He is well known."' This duly appeared in the paper, and the following morning the man was astonished when he opened the front door of his residence. On the porch lay at least a dozen umbrellas of all shades and sizes, while the front yard was literally paved with' umbrellas. Many of them had notes attached, saying that they had been taken by mistake, and begging the loser to keep the little affair qniet.— A'. II. Scnlin?!. The man who tra - . els on the rail- road and sits down by the side of lone females, while laboring under the im- pression that he recognizes a likeness in their faces to his wife's aunt's cousin, met his match on one of the roads in this vicinity lately. He sat down in the half of a seai. the other half of which was occupied by a pleasant-faced young lady. His first question was: "Pardon me, Miss, but is your name James? I have a cousin of that name whom you greatly resemble." "No, sir," was the reply, "my name is not James^ But, pardon me, is your name Zinc or Copper?"' "Zinc or Copper? No, said the astonished man. "What fed you to suppose I had such a name?" "Excuse me," was the quiet reply, "but I thought you must be ffrsfc cousin to a brass foundry."' The man fell over two seats am* kicked a bird cage linlf way down tire- ear in his haste to get into t!i« smok- ing car, while the young lady smiled a gentle smiled behind her lianc'ker~ chief.—N. H. Sentinel. To PUT A GLOSS ON LINEN^—Put t-rro ounces of fine white c«m arabic powder in a pitcher and pour over it a pint or more of water; then cover it and let it stand over night. In the morning pour it carefully from the dregs into a clean bottle, cork and keep to use. A teaspoonful of tbis gum water, in a pint of starch, made the usual way, will five to linen, white or printed, a look of newness, when nothing else can restore them, after they have been wasfied. It will also give a fine polish to linen. =T APSA mmit liSii ^ " x&m&pz

For the fourth time in the course of her long and prosperous reign the Queen of England has.been made the object of ?>.n attack by a madman— for it appears that the wretch McLean, like his predecessors in crime, is a crank, and will probably be dealt with as such. The telegraph give? us little more than the bare statement that on Thursday last, a« the Queen wfta, -I-^avWigr-W for the Castle, McLean fired one shot, at the royal carriage, and attempted to fire a second, when a bystander wrenched the pistol from his hands. Fortunately the ball, although aimed in the right direct-ion, traveled too high to achieve the miserable wretch*? object, and through the intervention of a wise Providence the Queen of England is yet spared to guard and watch over the interests of her subjects who love her so well. The incident has been promptly utilized by the President and his Cabinet to show our relatives on the other side that we arc not insensible to the kind sympathy evinced for us in our great sorrow, and the press of the country has more than seconded the action of the higher powers.

FROM THE HUB. Well, here I come, fresh again.

We have just about astonished the natives. Why? Because we have bid farwell to whiskey, and come down to tea, coffee, and such. Perhaps some think "Skimy" will backslide, but if he does it will not be behind a wood pile, nor in the back room of some saloon. There is one thing, I do not throw any blame on the saloon keepers for my bad bumming, for some of them have advised me to let strong drink alone, and one told a friend of mine if I would let it alone for a year he would give me ten dollars. Now I am not going to lecture on temperance, for every man knows his own business when sober, but when I took off my coat, vest and hat, and hung them on a hitching post and danced around it, I was not sober. I could tell more about myself, but I want to put it in by littles so it will last longer. At this you must not whine, It's farewell to whisky and wine.

HUB.

V ERND AIIK. Dear Mr. Vennojr: Won't you please

send us a warm wave now? This is too cold for anything.

The 4th "of March, 1881, the day of Garfield's inauguration, was a cold and stormy one. Just one year from that date, Saturday, was another. We suppose superstitious folks will shake their heads at thought of this.

That new company of Montanaites will light out next week. Bully for the Yellowstone, and good luck to all the fortune-seekers in that far off land.

Mrs. Rosbrook has been quite ill, but is a little better at this writing. Dr. Babcock is attendiag physician.

More business changes are liable to occur at anv time.

A Hartford (Coan.) man was denouncing newspaper advertising to a crowd of listeners.

"Last week," said lie, "I had an umbrella stolen from the vestibule of the church. It was a gift, and valuing it very highly, I spent double the worth in advertising, but I have not recovered it."

"How did you word the advertisement?" asked a merchant.

"Here it is," said the man, producing a slip cut from a newspaper.

The merchant took it, and read: "Lost from the vestibule of the

church last S nlay evening, a black silk umbrella. The gentleman who took it will b» handsomely rewarded by le?ving it at No. — Sare Fernando street."

"Now. said the merchant, "I am illiberal advertiser, and have always found it paid me well. A great dear depends upon the manner in which an advertisement^ is put. Let us try for your umbrella again, and if you do not then acknowledge that advertising pays, 1 will purchase you a new one."

The merchant then took a slip of paper from his pocket and wrote:

"If the man who was seen to take an umbrella from the vestibule of the

church last Sunday does not wish to get into trouble, and have a staii* cast upon the Christian character which he values so highly, he will return it at once to 2fo. — San Fer--nando street. He is well known."'

This duly appeared in the paper, and the following morning the man was astonished when he opened the front door of his residence. On the porch lay at least a dozen umbrellas of all shades and sizes, while the front yard was literally paved with' umbrellas. Many of them had notes attached, saying that they had been taken by mistake, and begging the loser to keep the little affair qniet.— A'. II. Scnlin?!.

The man who tra-. els on the railroad and sits down by the side of lone females, while laboring under the impression that he recognizes a likeness in their faces to his wife's aunt's cousin, met his match on one of the roads in this vicinity lately. He sat down in the half of a seai. the other half of which was occupied by a pleasant-faced young lady. His first question was:

"Pardon me, Miss, but is your name James? I have a cousin of that name whom you greatly resemble."

"No, sir," was the reply, "my name is not James^ But, pardon me, is your name Zinc or Copper?"'

"Zinc or Copper? No, said the astonished man. "What fed you to suppose I had such a name?"

"Excuse me," was the quiet reply, "but I thought you must be ffrsfc cousin to a brass foundry."'

The man fell over two seats am* kicked a bird cage linlf way down tire-ear in his haste to get into t!i« smoking car, while the young lady smiled a gentle smiled behind her lianc'ker~ chief.—N. H.
