Well Done to all the runners from Ackworth Road Runners Club who participated in the Snake Lane race on Sunday 22nd February. I was there (I was one of the non club runner’s) and set my pb however, still managed to come 108th out of 113 in my category—maybe some room for improvement! Ion a more positive note, there was a good atmosphere and we missed the worst of the weather thank goodness!!

The Arrow will again be delivered to Badsworth village from this month onwards, please keep in touch and let me know what is happening in your villages so I can keep everyone informed through the Arrow.

School articles are always welcome so if any of the local primary schools wish to share their school news, please contact me on the details below.

The deadline for the April issue for advertising and articles is Wednesday 25th March. The April Arrow will be delivered the first weekend in April.

Debbie Harrod the Owner of Ackworth Flowers has seen the business grow and flourish over the past two years and believes the Arrow, which goes into over 3000 local homes, has assisted in publicising her shop and all she has to offer.

The shop is a virtual treasure house of delights offering a wide variety of homeware and gifts, supplying the extra individual items to support and enhance the floral tributes they create. The variety of homeware on sale would complement any house, whatever the decor or style.

Fresh flowers are delivered 3 times a week, direct from Holland. The shop has a purpose built, air-conditioned, temperature controlled flower store and preparation room to ensure flowers are kept as fresh as possible. Debbie Harrod and her shop manager Debbie Braidley have, between them, almost 50 years of experience and produce a wide range of spectacular floral decorations, bouquets, wreaths etc to suit every taste and pocket.

Debbie is currently awaiting a delivery of new stock to replenish her shop after a very successful Valentine’s Day weekend. Her excellent gift assortment will be available for Mother’s Day and many of her floral tributes will, this year, have a Vintage theme. This month, once again Debbie will be hosting a flower demonstration at The Kings Croft Hotel Pontefract. Tickets £17.50 including a hot buffet, proceeds towards Dr. Jackson’s Cancer Trust.

Debbie has her own web site and delivers flowers locally and nationally through the e-florist network. She gives talks and demonstrations to local ladies’ groups. She will also be running flower workshops throughout the year, to be held at the Ramsden Hall in Thorpe Audlin.

For further details and information consult the web site, call in at the shop on the Wakefield Rd. or ring 01977 619944.

All Saints

St Cuthberts &

Durham It may seem strange to be writing an article about Durham, in a magazine devoted to Ackworth. But there is an obvious connection, which many people will know. St Cuthbert. The Parish Church is St Cuthbert’s Church. The body of St Cuthbert resides in Durham Cathedral.

I have recently visited Durham, and the cathedral there, and of course visited the shrine to St Cuthbert, along with many other displays around the cathedral. On arriving at the Cathedral we were met by several guides who were more than willing to tell all about the cathedral, and its history. They were obviously very proud of a building which they considered to be their own. When I mentioned York Minster, they became very defensive and eager to tell us that Durham is a much older building and a fine example of Romanesque architecture, except the later developments which are in the gothic style. As a past minor student of church architecture, I knew what he was talking about. And indeed Durham cathedral is a fantastic example of architecture, and I was able to appreciate that, and also much more.

There was a sense of spirituality about the place. The shrine of St Cuthbert was given greater respect than the rest of the building, and I noticed that the people who visited and walked through there were silent, as I sat silently and watched the candles flickering gently, and looking at the artwork on the banners which display something of Cuthbert’s life. The shrine is much simpler than it used to be before the reformation, something that Cuthbert, who desired only to live a simple life, would have approved of. Although he probably wouldn’t have wanted a shrine at all!

However, the thing that caught my imagination was the opportunity to build the cathedral in lego. Part of the fundraising efforts of the Cathedral staff is to build a scale model of the Cathedral in lego. You pay a pound, and you are given a brick, and told where to put it. At my visit, I was able to place a brick contributing to the construction of the north tower. It’s a great and fun way to raise money. But my imagination was caught in the vision of hundreds of thousands of people all working together to build a church. Albeit a lego church.

I believe that is what church is all about, and probably society too. Everyone contributes their own part and builds the whole. It doesn’t matter what others are doing elsewhere in the building,, just as long as the whole works together. It doesn’t matter if someone else is a decorated Romanesque arch in the nave, but you are a plain faced pillar in the crypt. It doesn’t matter if someone else is the slab coving St Cuthbert’s tomb, but you are a stone tile in the vestry. What matters is that you are part of something, and without you, that something is not complete. Everything and everyone is important. We should all value what others do more than valuing ourselves. Ackworth Road runners Had their largest turnout ever at the Snake Lane Race in Pocklington on Sunday 22nd February with 25 runners taking part.

Despite cold (and eventually sleety) conditions with a cold wind breeze blowing down Snake Lane itself, there were some superb performances - many off the back of marathon training. Sarah Rose put a marker down for the most improved this year knocking almost 15 mins off her pb. This was bettered by Clare Hill who knocked an unbelievable 17:58 off her best - pity she didn't do a 10m last year! Andrew Parkes improved by 8:14, Diane Widdowson by 6;38, Vic Adams by 3:14. Other excellent pbs by Richard Smart - our first home, John Knowles, Jeff Denton and Karen Youel (decade pb). Aleks Kubasiak and Nicola Holmes set pb’s for their first runs - both excellent times. Well done to everyone.
