St. Vincent de Paul’s HOPE Warming Place is in need of Volunteers to staff the facility on some of the coldest nights of the upcoming season. At this point we are most in need of Volunteers for Wednesdays, Thursdays and Saturdays. However, if those nights will not work for you but you are available to volunteer, we can schedule you on the night you are available. Please consider help-ing others in need in this effort to keep them safe and cold during the winter nights.

Lucia lived. Then on to Fatima, Portugal, the site
where the Virgin Mary appeared monthly from May
13 to October 13, 1917. Our journey will finish in the

Altar Society News: 1st meeting for 2019: will be Tuesday February 5th at 7:00 pm in the Altar Society room. All women of the parish are welcomed and en-couraged to attend. Dues: remain at $5.00 for the year and 2019 dues will be collected at our next meeting.
Quilt: plans are in the works for our 2019 Bazaar Quilt. Anyone who can sew a 1/4 inch seam is able to help with this group project, (including men)! Please contact Brenda at 541-296-4817 or Lois at 541-298-1748 for information.

Los estudiantes reunirán las Bolsas de cumpleaños con el dinero que habían estado recolectando durante las últimas semanas al traer el cambio, pagando $ 1 cada día para usar un sombrero y dinero del café y las donas. We thank the Lord for everyone who has so generously sup-ported St. Mary’s with gifts of prayers, time, donations, pur-chases, and attendance at our Family Carnival and Super Auction. The support given by our school families, parish and community is a testimony of the Holy Spirit working and of hearts open in the spirit of love and generosity. Thank you for your love and support for our school. Our students enjoyed many activities during National Cath-olic Schools Week with dress up days and helping with Mass. Thank you to all or our student helpers who served at mass, sang in the choir, played, read intentions, did the readings, brought down the gifts and helped usher. Our stu-dents do great things and we are happy to share them in our community. Students will be putting together Birthday Bags from money they had been collecting for the past few weeks by bringing in change, paying $1 each day to wear a hat and money from coffee and donuts. Be looking to find out how many Birthday bags we were able to put together for the St. Vin-cent de Paul Food bank. If you would like to donate items for the bags or funds bring them into the office and we will make sure another child has the opportunity to celebrate their birthday

From the Pastor’s Desk – Fr. Levine- The chief complaint that has come to my ears regarding the celebration of Mass facing the tabernacle is, “I no longer feel involved.” Fair enough, but let us use this as an opportunity for deeper reflection. What exactly are you involved in when you attend Mass? How has that changed? Are you open to learning a new way of ‘involvement’ that might lead deeper into the reality of the Mass? No one has told me why he no longer feels involved and perhaps people who feel this way are unable to articulate the reason. I will suggest some possible reasons and perhaps that will help people think the matter through. The first most obvious reason is that when Mass is celebrated facing the tabernacle a person is no longer able to see what he sees when the priest faces the people. Indeed, the only thing that has changed is in what is seen. When the priest celebrates towards the people his face is visible, the sacred vessels placed on the altar in front of him are visible, and his gestures are more visible. Now, I would suggest that if seeing the priest’s face is key to ‘involvement’ then something is wrong with the involvement because the focus has become the relation between the person of the priest and the people. The Mass is not about the priest; he is but a minister of Jesus Christ. He is in service of the altar and the gifts on the altar are more important than he is. How about the sacred vessels? Well there is really not much to see here insofar as they are just sitting there on the altar. Even more what is seen is just the container, not the bread or the wine in the container. Is it not enough to see the bread and wine brought up and placed on the altar by the priest, even if after it is no longer on the altar it has become ‘veiled’ by the priest standing at the al-tar? Or is this important to someone simply because it is a reminder, a point of focus? How about the priest’s gestures? When Mass is celebrated facing the people he can be seen actually placing the vessels on the al-tar. The gesture of hands and face at “Lift up your hearts” is more visible. The movement of his hands when he invokes the Holy Spirit before the consecration is more visible. He can also be seen holding the bread and chalice in his hands when he says the actu-al words of consecration. Likewise he can be seen holding chalice and paten when says or sings the words at the conclusion of Eu-charistic Prayer: “Through him, with him, and in him…” For myself, when I was a simple layman in the congregation, I never became habituated to participating in the Mass by visually fo-cusing on these gestures. Nevertheless, I can understand that for some people this might be an important point of focus that is tak-en away from them when the priest turns around and celebrates facing the other way. Nevertheless, if it is simply a matter of an accustomed manner of focusing, paying attention, and following what is going on in the Mass, this is something that can be changed. Three things might help here. First, since you have become accustomed to seeing these things, you actually know what it looks like, you know that what you used to see is still going on, even though it is now hidden by the ‘veil’ of the priest’s body. Two Sundays ago, I wrote about the meaning of veils in our worship. I wrote: “Veils remind us that in this life we still receive the divine light through the veil of faith, rather than the face-to-face vision of the heavenly kingdom.” The veil of the priest’s back re-minds us that all the things that are hidden from our sight on the altar are like veils that both reveal and conceal the mystery. The veil of the priest’s back reminds us that here and now we still walk by faith, not by sight. Second, if what is seen is a help in focusing and paying attention, the visible things themselves are secondary; that focus and that attention should be leading us to the invisible reality of the Mass. What is on the altar, in front of the priest and very visible to him, always looks like bread and wine. Nevertheless, before the consecration it really is bread and wine, while after the consecration it has become the Body and Blood of Christ. That change is not seen except by the eyes of faith, nor is the Body and Blood seen, ex-cept by the eyes of faith. Third, we can consider what is seen when the priest faces the tabernacle, not the people. By the way, the priest’s field of vision also changes. When he faces the people he sees the gifts on the altar and the people; when he turns around he sees the gifts on the altar, the tabernacle, and the crucifix. What do the people see? Desde el Escritorio del párroco El Padre José – La queja principal que he llegado a mis oídos con respecto a la celebración de la misa frente al tabernáculo es: "Ya no me siento involucrado". Justo lo suficiente, pero utilicemos esto como una oportunidad para una reflexión más profundo. ¿En qué estás involucrado ex-actamente cuando asistes a misa? ¿Cómo ha cambiado eso? ¿Está abierto a aprender una nueva forma de "participación" que po-dría llevar a profundizar en la realidad de la Misa? Nadie me ha dicho por qué ya no se siente involucrado y quizás las personas que se sienten así no pueden expresar la razón. Sugeri-ré algunas posibles razones y tal vez eso ayude a las personas a pensar el asunto. La primera razón más obvia es que cuando se celebra la misa frente al tabernáculo, una persona ya no puede ver lo que ve cuando el sacerdote se enfrenta a la gente. De hecho, lo único que ha cambiado está en lo que se ve. Cuando el sacerdote celebra hacia la gente, su rostro es visible, las vasijas sagradas colocadas en el altar frente a él son visibles, y sus gestos son más visibles. Ahora, sugeriría que si ver el rostro del sacerdote es clave para la "participación", entonces hay un problema con la participación porque el enfoque se ha convertido en la relación entre la el sacerdote y la gente. Sin embargo, puedo entender que para algunas personas este podría ser un punto importante de enfoque que se les quita cuando el sacerdote se da vuelta y celebra mirando hacia el otro lado. Sin embargo, si se trata simplemente de una manera acostumbrada de enfocar, prestar atención y seguir lo que está sucediendo en la Misa, esto es algo que se puede cambiar. Tres cosas pueden ayudar aquí. Primero, ya que se ha acostumbrado a ver estas cosas, realmente sabes cómo se ve, sabes que lo que solías ver sigue ocurriendo, a pesar de que ahora esté oculto por el "velo" del cuerpo del sacerdote.
