How do we measure progress against the MDGs for water and sanitation?

• Joint Monitoring Program (JMP) of UNICEF and WHO conducts global annual reviews

• Figures are reported usually about the same time as World Water Day and the report is always for the situation two years before – as data processing and report writing and production take a long time.

• Baseline for MDG targets is 1990• JMP reports in access to water and sanitation

in urban and rural areas

Overall, the target to halve the proportion of people without access to water from improved sources was achieved in 2010! However, many challenges remain.

Page 10: Achieving the Water Targets for the Millennium Development Goals Keynote Speech World Water Day Seminar Miracle Grand Hotel 22 March 2012

For sanitation, the situation is not good. The target for access to improved sanitation will not be met by 2015.
