June 16th to 18th, 2019
Program
“Discovering Scholarship and Research
in Academia”
Hosted by:
- 2 -
The oral health problems facing our nation extend beyond primary disease or developmental pathologies, but are complex
and multi-factorial including genetic, social, cultural, behavioral and environmental factors. In order to effectively define and
manage oral health problems and challenges, their multi-factorial nature needs to be addressed through rigorous and
reproducible research. The objective of the Association of Canadian Faculties of Dentistry 2019 biennial meeting is to focus on
the role of Canadian’s ten dental school in addressing these oral health needs through the continuum of oral health research
and scholarly activity spanning basic science, translational and clinical research, faculty career development and student
training.
The era of individual or “ivory tower”-based science programs has passed and highly effective research involves teams of
clinicians and scientists through multi- and inter-disciplinary collaborations. Addressing the oral health and oral health care
needs of the nation will require interdisciplinary teams: a uniquely trained group of scientists who not only have a firm
understanding of the multi-factorial components of the complex oral, dental and craniofacial diseases, but who can also be
effective leaders or members of interdisciplinary teams.
The goal of today’s event is be begin a dialogue to foster increased research and scholarship collaborations across the ten
Canadian Faculties of Dentistry that will impact oral health while developing a new cadre of students who can serve as
research leaders in academic dentistry to address the nation's health care needs in dental, oral and craniofacial research.
”Ensure that a strong and diverse research workforce is dedicated to improving dental, oral, and craniofacial health”.
