In 1961 ACFS admitted its first female member, Ann g. rotramel, a 1948 graduate of theIllinois school who practiced in New Ulm, Minnesota. In 1965, the first African Americanmember was welcomed, Peggie r. roberson, a California college graduate who practicedin Los Angeles.

The movement of a separate certification board started in 1960 but the American Boardof Podiatric Surgery (now ABFAS) was not finalized until 1977. In 1979 the first formal andshared offices of ABPS and ACFS opened in San Francisco. John Bennett served as thefirst full-time executive director of both organizations.
