Richard Ingersoll and Lisa Merrill : “Whose teaching our kids?”
This article is not so much a commentary on who is teaching our kids, but a collection of datathat shows trends in who becomes a teacher. For example, there has been a 111% increase in thenumber of teachers in schools for elementary education. The authors call this effect “ballooning.” There
is also an increase in younger teachers but also, surprisingly, an increase in older teachers, with adecrease in teachers between the ages of 35-55.
Marilyn Cochran-Smith: New Directions for Teacher Preparation
This article discusses both issues with current teaching preparation, and also suggestseducational reforms that may remedy the issues. The article has tensions between the problem and
solution but also in the disparity between how some schools evaluate teachers and others do not.
The “teacher -quality g ap” is a difference in the quality of teachers based on economic class. Trendsshow that low-income students are more likely to have inexperienced teachers. This is a main
reason why teacher preparation is in question. Overall, Cochran-Smith suggests that frequentteacher-evaluation with performance review and practice-based learning at the university level
(note: Music education majors, in my observation, learn mostly by observation).
