For Fisher Size 30 thru 87 ActuatorsDT: Westlock has merged absoluteencoder sensing technology withloop-powered analog transmission to create the Spectrum DT full-range position monitor. Establishinga new performance standard, thecommunication mode continues tobe the standard 4-20 mA analogsignal while actual sensing isachieved by a true digital sensor.

The Spectrum DT PositionTransmitter derives its operatingpower from the 4-20mA loop itself, with no need for an external powerconnection. This is a high-level signal not easily affected by outsidenoise. In addition to the advantagesof standardization, reduced fieldwiring costs and immunity frommost electrical noise, the 4-20mAtransmitter offers these benefits:

! Any number of signal receiverscan be series-connected into thesignal circuit without upsetting calibration.

! Multiple transmitters may sharethe same power supply.

! A 4-20mA signal is a "live zero"signal, which distinguishes aprocess condition (4mA) from anopen circuit condition (OmA).

! No position loss on power down.

! Operates in electrically noisy environments.

    Linear Valve Position Sensors

In 1981, a change appeared in theNational Electrical Code in the formof an exception for conduit runs of 1 1/2 inches and smaller:"Apparatus which may producearcs or sparks need not be sealedif the current interrupting contactsare enclosed within a chamberhermetically sealed against theentrance of gases or vapors." Thisexception in the Code offered largesavings by the elimination of costlyexternal seal fittings.

    Silver BulletTM

The utilization of Magnum SilverBullet hermetically sealed sensorsis not only cost-effective but addscircuit reliability in the form of corrosion resistance and contactintegrity. By utilizing hermeticallysealed sensors in lieu of pottedswitches, up-front costs arereduced $300 per single installation and extend to a totalsavings of $30,000 per one hundred control valves.

    Aero ❍ Sensor

All Magnum Silver Bullet Sensorsshare the same fundamentaltechnology as the aerospaceexpertise found in the positionverification systems of satelliteantennas and space shuttle TV cameras.

EnvironmentCareful consideration was given tothe environment in which the sensorwill operate. Caustics, acids, chlo-rides and saltwater can be a dailyoccurrence. The Silver Bullet, sup-ported by UL and CSA HazardousLocation, Division 1 & 2 certifica-tion, isolates these critical interiorcontact areas from moisture andcorrosion intrusion. Housed in a316 stainless jacket, the highly corrosion-resistant tungsten con-tacts are hermetically sealed in aninert atmosphere, then encapsulat-ed in a plastic coating to cushionthe sensor in case of shock andvibration and then re-encapsulatedin a premium grade polymerimpervious to moisture, chemicalsand solvents. Contact reliability is maintained against the adverseeffects of transients through thesensors inherent capabilities ofwithstanding momentary surges of up to 5 amps.

CommitmentOur confidence in this product isreflected in our decision to firmlystand behind the Silver Bullet withan unconditional five year warranty.A warranty that confirms our commitment to excellence in theperformance of your equipment.

    AdjustableTrigger

    Fieldset Arm

    FieldsetTM Triggering System

Start-UpAll of a sensors capabilities are made and broken atthe contact point. Sensors that are set for positionat the factory do not always remain that way afterarriving in the field or being connected to pipelinesand conduit systems. Final field adjustment is usually a difficult task when sensors are firmly heldin place by rigid conduit. A simply engineered slide-action FieldsetTM arm takes this fact into consideration by providing a unique double upper and lower trigger for ease of final field setting.

MaintenanceAll Silver Bullets are bolted to heavyduty stainlesssteel brackets. Sensor triggering is accomplishedby stainless steel encapsulated ferromagnetic actu-ators. Eventually, as valve seats wear, a slightreadjustment of position sensors becomes neces-sary. The FieldsetTM triggering system allows fastresetting by the simple turning of a bolt rather thanthe disconnecting of rigid conduit systems.

    OPERATINGRANGE

Non-Contact Position TransmitterThe EPIC® non-contact position transmitter represents a significantdeparture from previous attempts to reliably measure stem position of linear control valves. As opposedto conventional devices, no linkages, levers, rotary or linear seals are utilized. A static slide-by actuationassembly, attached to the valve stem,is the only "moving" part in the entiretransmitter. Sensing is performedtotally by non-contacting means, based upon characterization of fluxstrength as a function of axial position.

A solid state sensor is employed, whose output is a function of bothflux density and excitation voltage. That property allows the use of aninternal bridge circuit for highly accurate zero adjustment, where onearm of the bridge is comprised of thesensor, and the other comprised of aresistive divider for zero reference.

Transmitter output is 4-20 mA,2 wire, with compliance voltageranging from 14,5 to 35 volts.Output updating takes place 20times per second, allowing use of the transmitter for applicationsheretofore not possible with transmitters of other types. Theinherent reliability of the transmitterpermits use of advanced controlstrategies, where knowledge of valveposition can be used in predictiveand other algorithms.

Predictive DiagnosticsEPIC® provides operating personnelthe capability of bringing a higherdegree of intelligence to the final control element. On-board electronicsallow remote monitoring and diagnos-tics that continuously monitor controlvalve positioning performance, allowingcomparison with the ideal. Reportingof deviations affords plant personnelthe ability to detect problems beforethey become serious enough to trig-ger an alarm or shutdown.

Need For Diagnostic CapabilityIn terms of diagnostics, one of themost common problems in controlvalves is a form of "stickiness" developing in the packing or guidebushings.

In addition, most pneumatic actua-tors do not provide infinite positioning"stiffness". That is, a sudden decreaseof force required to stroke the valvewill cause the actuator to strokefurther than intended with the actuator air signal held constant.

In practice, the mass of actuator and valve moving parts is low enoughthat a rapid "jump" in position willoccur due to the fall in friction at theonset of stroking. The "jump" is rapidenough that the positioner cannot correct quickly enough to prevent theresulting overshoot.

As age, wear, and other factors taketheir toll, the "jump" effect often be-comes more pronounced. The resultingovershoot may become severe enoughthat the positioner continually tries tocorrect the situation, resulting in aconstant "hunting" condition.

Early Detection and DiagnosticsWith proper signal processing, theEPIC transmitter is ideal for detectingthe onset of such effects. Early diagnosis allows maintenance or othercorrective action to be scheduled;therefore avoiding a severe problem. The key in detection lies in determina-tion of maximum rate of positionchange, or alternatively, in a comparisonbetween rate of change of position signal and the actual position change of the valve.

Rate of valve position change may bedetermined by taking EPIC transmitterreadings at finite intervals, perhapsonce per second. The change in position during each interval may becompared with a maximum allowablevalue. In essence, the techniquedescribed here amounts to taking afirst time derivative of position bynumerical means.
