Director’s Message

Welcome to the fourteenth issue of the Australia-China Centre for Tissue Engineering and Regenerative Medicine’s newsletter. The purpose of this newsletter is to keep you informed of news and events happening within ACCTERM, including staff update, member achievements, Short-term Mobility Program, QUT MPhil Program, forthcoming TERMIS-AP+ABMC7 2019 Congress, ACCTERM Forum, collaborative grant applications and latest news.

I would like to take this opportunity to wish Dr Mengchao Shi and Dr Ying Yang all the best since Dr Shi took up a position as a Senior Officer at Microsurgery in May 2019 and Dr Yang will join University of Michigan as a postdoctoral research fellow in late 2019. Both of them joined ACCTERM in June 2017, and their contribution is much appreciated. Dr Lan Xiao is currently working part-time as ACCTERM Coordinator in assisting with ACCTERM activities. A full-time position for ACCTERM Coordinator will be open soon.

The forthcoming Tissue Engineering & Regenerative Medicine International Society–Asia Pacific Chapter and the 7th Asian Biomaterials Congress will be held on 14–17 October 2019 at the Brisbane Convention and Exhibition Centre. This year’s ACCTERM Research Forum will be held on 22-24 November 2019 at Shanghai, China. On behalf of the Local Organising Committee, I am pleased to invite you to attend these two exciting events!

Yours Sincerely,

ACCTERM Director

ACCTERM was invited to host a group pf students from National Youth Science Forum (NYSF) on the 15th of January 2019. For 36 years the NYSF has provided quality science programs to students entering Year 12. Mr Erik de Wit firstly gave a brief introduction of IHBI to showcase our research programs and capacity. Dr Daniel Broszczak, Dr Abbas Shafiee, Dr Jessica van Haeften and Dr Indira Prasadam were invited to share their academic career journey with the students, and presented their current research projects.

The students were divided into two groups to visit the lab after the lab induction by Dr Ying Yang. One group visited the Histology Lab led by Dr Andi Lee, and another group visited the Additive Biomanufacturing Centre led by Dr Onur Bas. It is expected that this visit to IHBI would provide young students with a sense of wonder at the scope, potential impact and creativity of scientific research. We received feedback from the students that they thoroughly enjoyed the visit.

Professor Yin Xiao was invited to give a plenary talk at the 2019 International Conference on Regenerative Biomedical Materials (ICRBM) held in Wuhan on 13-14 June 2019. Professor Xiao delivered the talk “Targeting Inflammation for Biomaterials Design in Regenerative Medicine” and chaired several sessions. The conference was organized by our ACCTERM member, Professor Shengmin Zhang from Huazhong University of Science and Technology.

Professor Changsheng Liu, a long-term ACCTERM Chinese partner, Academician of Chinese Academy of Sciences, was promoted as President of Shanghai University in June 2019. Professor Liu used to be President of East University of Science and Technology (ECUST). Currently, ECUST and QUT are collaborating on a QUT Master of Philosophy (Materiobiology) program whereby highly competent students at ECUST in their final year bachelor’s studies will be selected to apply for enrolment in QUT’s Master of Philosophy program.

Professor Chengtie Wu was recently promoted to the Deputy Director of Shanghai Institute of Ceramics, Chinese Academy of Sciences (SICCAS). There are great collaborative achievements between QUT and SICCAS, including joint publications, student supervision and collaborative grants. There have been more than 50 times of student/researcher exchange. Queensland Premier and QUT VC group visited to SICCAS several times in the past six years. The upcoming ACCTERM Research Forum will be hosted by SICCAS in November 2019.

Professor Yin Xiao visited Sun Yat-sen University in June 2019 and met with Professor Zhengmei Lin, Deputy Dean of Guanghua School of Stomatology, Professor Yan Wang, the newly appointed Associate Dean, and Professor Juan Xia. Professor Wang led a delegation to attend ACCTERM Strategic Meeting at QUT in November 2018. They discussed the 2019 ACCTERM Forum, student recruitment, joint research funding application and GDST 2019 International collaboration.

Professor Zetao Chen was promoted as Deputy Director of Department of Research Development, Sun Yat-sen University. He was awarded the Outstanding Doctoral Thesis Award in 2016 and also the Thousand Talents Plan—The Recruitment Program of Global Experts to China in 2018. Professor Chen received the Australia-China Outstanding Yong Alumnus Award in 2018. This award highlights the significant achievement of QUT’s HDR and postdoctoral training, as well as great collaborative outcome from ACCTERM partners.

The ACCTERM Short-Term Mobility Program provides funding opportunities for reciprocal exchange of higher degree research (HDR) students between QUT and Chinese partner Institutes/Universities on a short-term basis (maximum 3 months). The aim of this program is to support students and early-career researchers (ECRs) who wish to experience studying and working in either China or Australia.

Dr Yifan Wang from Huazhong University of Science and Technology (HUST) has worked at IHBI for three months as a short-term research fellow (January-March 2019). His project focused on promoting bone healing using smart hyaluronic acid (HA) hydrogel with hematoma-structure-regulating molecules. Dr Wang has been working with Dr Ying Yang and Professor Yuantong Gu’s group on an ARC Linkage Grant application. The research proposal has been drafted and is currently with Prof Yin Xiao and Prof Shengmin Zhang (HUST) for final correction before submitting to ARC.

East China University of Science and Technology (ECUST) and Queensland University of Technology (QUT) have been working towards a Bachelor to Master of Philosophy (MPhil) Program (agreement signed in November 2018). Highly competent students from ECUST in their final year of bachelor’s studies will be selected by ECUST academics to apply for enrolment in QUT’s MPhil Program in Materiobiology. If successful, these students will complete the MPhil at QUT’s Brisbane campus over a period of up to eighteen (18) months of full time enrolment.

QUT Academic Board and Degree Board has recently approved the MPhil Program. Student recruitment process will start shortly. Professor Yin Xiao is working with Ms Jacqueline Yuan (QUT), Ms Annie Liu (QUT), and Professor Changsheng Liu (ECUST) on the promotion of the MPhil Program in Materiobiology.
