Therapy procedureThe scope of treatment and therapy procedure are dis-

cussed with the patient. Contact gel is applied to the ther-

Therapy duration and frequencyOn average, each cellulite therapy session takes about 30

What is »AWT« and why is it effective in cellulite treatment?»Acoustic Wave Therapy« uses acoustic sound waves which

are generated in an application handpiece and gently in-

troduced into the affected body regions. Acoustic waves

have been used in medicine with great success since 1980

for the disintegration of kidney stones and since 1990 for

the treatment of tendon and muscle disorders.

Modern cellulite therapy applies acoustic sound waves

to cellulite regions. Upon introduction into the body, the

acoustic sound waves propagate over a large area and ex-

ert their stimulating and curative action in the skin layers.

Cellulite only affects women owing to their genetic pre-dis-

position to the disorder. It typically appears on the thighs,

buttocks and upper arms. The connective tissue is soft and

elastic and exhibits a wide-meshed network of collagen

fibres to enable stretching during pregnancy. An imbalance between fat production (lipogenesis) and fat breakdown

(lipolysis) within the cells leads to the formation of large

fat cells that are typical of cellulite. Owing to the wide-

meshed, soft structure of the connective tissue, these fat

cells bulge upwards towards the surface of the skin, giving

the skin the typical dimpled orange peel appearance.
