ACCOUNTING TECHNICIANS IRELAND - YEAR 2 COURSE

(ET21R)IntroductionThis course is for people who have successfully completed the Accounting Technicians Ireland first year course. It’s for those who wish to pursue careers as accounts administrators. It offers participants the opportunity to develop a broad range of knowledge, skills and competencies which will allow them to work independently in a variety of office environments. They will learn how to carry out tasks in the areas of financial accounting, budgeting, costing, credit control, payroll and tax returns. The mix of subjects is designed to provide students with a solid grounding in business as well as a strong foundation in accountancy. The course modules are: Advanced Financial Accounting, Advanced Taxation, Management Accounting, and Integrated Accounting Systems (IAS). The learning outcomes are firmly focused on enabling participants to gain employment as accounting staff.

What you’ll study – Course Modules:• Induction - The planned outcomes and conditions attached to

attendance on the course; good safety, health and hygiene practices; the basic principles involved in environmental issues; and the meaning of equal opportunities.

• Advanced Financial Accounting – Demonstrate an understanding and proficiency in the application of legal, ethical and professional standards in accounting; prepare accounts from incomplete records, prepare accounts for partnerships and limited companies; prepare cash flow and financial statements for companies; critically analyse, interpret and communicate the contents of financial statements in a professional manner; and use ratio analysis as a tool in decision making and performance evaluation.

• Management Accounting - Demonstrate an understanding and proficiency in the application of management accounting, business goals and objectives, the business planning process, management accounting systems, marginal costing and decision making, and standard costing, budgetary planning and control.

• Advanced Taxation - Demonstrate an understanding and proficiency in the tax system in relation to Revenue, legislation, accounting technicians, tax payers, and ethical and compliance considerations; communicate effectively with individuals and Revenue officials; complete Revenue forms including Revenue On-Line forms; demonstrate an understanding and proficiency in personal tax management in relation to PRSI, Universal Social Charge, Capital Gains, residency rules and tax liability calculations; demonstrate an understanding and proficiency in business tax management in relation to communications and ethics, employment and self-employment, taxation of business profits, contracts tax, VAT, Corporation Tax and residency rules.

• Integrated Accounting Systems (IAS) -Demonstrate an understanding and proficiency in operating and maintaining computerised payroll

systems, computerised integrated accounting and double entry systems, and computerised spreadsheets and budgeting systems.

• Career Planning & Job Seeking Skills - Plan and achieve realistic employment goals.

• In-Company Training - Work independently, while under general supervision, in an organisation or specific vocational context related to either or all of the following: Accounting, Payroll and VAT.

Certification.• Accounting Technicians Ireland Diploma for Accounting Technicians.

Note: To obtain the Diploma for Accounting Technicians and full membership of The Institute of Accounting Technicians you must complete and pass all 1st year and 2nd year exams and have two years relevant work experience. The Integrated Accounting Systems exam is held in March or early April. It’s a half hour computer based exam. All other 2nd year exams are held in May over a two week period. The duration of each exam is three hours. They are all hand written exams.

Course Delivery Methods.

A combination of training methods is used to deliver this course. These include instructions, presentations, demonstrations, supervised practice, practical work training, discussion groups, role plays, and giving and receiving feedback. Participants are required to actively participate in the learning process and engage in course work outside of course hours. They must complete a number of written exercises throughout the course and keep up-to-date records of their progress. A number of methods are used to assess the participants’ progress and for certification purposes. These include internal theory exams, practical exams, learner records and skills demonstrations.

Entry Requirements. Do you meet the following criteria?

• Reached the statutory school leaving age.• A genuine interest in pursuing a career as an accounting technician.• Achieved a pass in at least 3 subjects in the first year Accounting

Technicians Ireland course, including both Financial Accounting 1 and Taxation 1. The pass mark is 50% for all subjects. Further details on www.accountingtechniciansireland.ie

• Good verbal, numerical and clerical aptitudes.• Good verbal and written command of the English language.• Previous experience in book-keeping and / or accountancy is desirable.• Computer skills are desirable• Good team working, communication and interpersonal skills.• Punctuality, full attendance and a commitment to study are essential to

successfully complete this course.• Previous work experience in an office or related environment is an

advantage.

They perform a variety of financial roles from financial accounting to budgeting, costing, credit control, payroll and tax returns.
