Hi everyone! Welcome to our Accounting & Finance CityChat! Today's session is for applicants interested in:
BSc (Hons) Accounting & Finance (N4N3 and NN43)
BSc (Hons) Accounting & Finance with foundation year (N3N4)
My name is Nikki and I work in the Cass Undergraduate Admissions team - looking forward to answering your
questions!:)
Some of you will have already received offers whilst many of you will still be waiting for a decision on your application.
Please be reassured that it'd totally normal to still be waiting on a decision at this time (although we appreciate how
nerve wracking the wait can be!).
If you applied by 15 January then we will aim to get a decision onto UCAS Track by 31 March (hopefully it will not take
that long!), and if you applied after 15 January then we will aim to get a decision onto UCAS Track by 30 June
(hopefully much earlier!).
Good afternoon, my name is Dr Danielle Lyssimachou and I am the Course Director of the BSc Accounting & Finance
degree at Cass Business School. I look forward to receiving your questions and I hope you find this chat useful!
Hi, I am Eni, a second year Accounting and Finance Student. I am very happy to answer all your questions. Thank you

I got conditional offer. I would like to understand how course designed especially term one of Accounting and
Finance. Anything academically to be prepared for it?
In term 1 of Year 1, you will have the following 5 modules: Introductory Financial Accounting, Introduction to Finance,
Professional Skills, Introduction to Business Law and Microeconomics. We will start from an introductory level with all
these modules, so there is no need to worry about having any pre-required knowledge .

Hi. Was just wondering, what is the likelihood of employability of graduates for the Accounting and Finance course?
Hi, a good starting point for this is to look at our destination of graduate leavers report which lists example
jobs, companies and salaries that our students go onto work for, as well as those who enter further
postgraduate study: https://www.city.ac.uk/careers/your-career/destinations-of-city-graduates

Hi, thank you for your question and I hope you are doing well. The majority of classes of year one and two will be held
at Northampton Square, City University of London, EClV0HB. However, in the third year, some meetings related to
Dissertation will be held in Bunhill Row, Cass Business School, and also an elective module in third year will be held
there too. I hope you find this helpful.
I am interested in N4N3 course with one year placement - is the placement guaranteed for year 3 students ?
Hey George, one of my concerns was the living cost in London. Would you please help me with the amount of money a
first year student spends (approximately)?
Hi!.:)
Hello! Glad to have you here. How can we help?
How is the process of applying for internships? and will graduation be delayed?
Hello, got a conditional offer. What are the chances of job placements after the course? Any indication what% of
students got placements?
Hi , approx. half the class completes summer internships (usually in the summer between 2nd and 3rd year), fewer
students complete 12-month paid work placements and a study abroad year (around 10-15% of the class). I very
much encourage students pursuing the 12-month work placement and study abroad options, so I see this o/o rising
over time .
Also is it better to live in the student accommodation or should we go for a private accomodation in london?
Hi ! Could you please explain your "flexibile offer scheme" in detail ?
Dr Danielle is there a reason why fewer students complete the 12 month paid work placements ?
What operating system is best for th is course? Does having windows or Mac OS have an advantage?

I am interested in N4N3 course with one year placement - is the placement guaranteed for year 3 students ?
Hi , students joining our BSc Accounting & Finance with placement year course are not guaranteed a placement. This
is because you have to apply for the placement opportunities and so have to put together a good application and
possible interview etc. However the advantage of starting on the placement course is that you will be invited to
placement related activities from the start. For more info I recommend having a look here:

In addition, we have a new university scheme available exclusively to Accounting & Finance students called
Microplacements. This is available to 1st and 2nd year Accounting & Finance students on a competitive basis and
involves working for SM Es and larger firms in London on a project for 3-5 weeks in the summer.
Hello, may I ask that is there scholarship provided to the first year students, it there is, how can we apply for that?
Also is it better to live in the student accommodation or should we go for a private accomodation in london?
Hi London is not incredibly cheap to live in but I would say student accommodations are a better option as they are
cheaper than Private Accommodation and also tend to be closer to the university buildings.
Hey George, one of my concerns was the living cost in London. Would you please help me with the amount of money
a first year student spends (approximately)?
Hi, thanks for your question! I would say it varies depending on which student accommodation you are living in etc,
but probably around £1000 - £1500 per month for living expenses and accommodation.
Dr Danielle is there a reason why fewer students complete the 12 month paid work placements ?
Hi , some students do not want to extend their degree to 4 years, so they would rather pursue a summer internship
instead of a 12-month work placement. I personally have a different view since I think you will benefit much more
work-wise from having one year of work experience, compared to a few weeks in the summer. Therefore, my
preference would be for the 12-month work placement over the summer internship .
Which student accomodation Hall is nearest to Northampton square for First year students ?

Hi ! Could you please explain your "flexibile offer scheme" in detail ?
Hi, the flexible offer scheme is available to conditional offer holders who have applied to Cass with either three or
more A Levels or the IB Diploma. It means that for those applicants if they Firmly accept the offer as their first choice
that we will guarantee their place on the course if they achieve slightly lower grades than we originally asked for. For
example the A Level criteria is AAA but using the scheme we would accept ABB, and for IB applicants we ask for 35
points with no less than 5 in each subject but can reduce the total to 32 (excluding bonus points). Unfortunately the
scheme is not open to other qualifications or those with a combination of A Levels and other qualifications (e.g. 1 A
level and 2 BTEC).

How is the process of applying for internships? and will graduation be delayed?
Hi, I hope you are keeping well today. Regarding you question, the process for internships usually includes: Cover
Letter & CV (stage 1), Online Tests (Stage 2), Video Interview (Stage 3) and Assessment Centre (Stage 4). This process is
mainly for big firms such as; EV, KPMG, Deloitte, Bank of America, Goldman Sachs and so on. However for smaller
firms, the process can be shorter, you can find specific information about the process in the career's website of each
company, as sometimes the process is different.
A summer internship will not delay your graduation as it usually takes place after first year(summer time) or after
second year(summer time).
If your interest will be in pursuing a placement year, which will take place after finishing second year, and usually lasts
9-12 months, then the graduation will be happening a year later.
Hopefully this helps.
Does first year count? And if so, by how much?

Hi, what times do lectures normally start and end? Also, how many days a week are lectures?
Does first year count? And if so, by how much?
Hi , thank you for question, year one does count 10% , second year 30%, third year 60%.
However, each year is very important regardless of the weight it carries, as every year builds up your skills and
knowledge.

I wanted to ask does city university help its students in preparing for job applications , CVs , interviews and all?I heard

Yes, we have a dedicated Cass undergraduate Placements Team that can help you with accessing the right employers
and placement/internship opportunities. Also, our Careers Service is excellent in helping you prepare: they run mock
interviews, mock assessment centres, they will check your CV. We also have weekly networking events with top
employers - they often run sessions dedicated to how to best prepare for summer internships and placements.
How soon should we apply for accomodations .. the minute we accept our offer on Ucas?
For accommodation I would advise applying as soon as you know that it is Cass that you want to study at :) For
information on the halls available have a look at the webpage https://www.city.ac.uk/accommodation and the

All you need to know about student accommodation at City, University of London.
Hi, what times do lectures normally start and end? Also, how many days a week are lectures?
Usually, the earliest lectures and tutorial lessons are at 9am and end at 6pm at the latest. Very infrequently will you
see lectures going on until 8pm (I've never had one of those so far!). Lectures are two hours long and tutorials are 1
hour long.
In the first and second years, you could see yourself going in for 4-5 days a week. This will likely reduce in the third
year, perhaps to about 3 days a week.

Hi I would like to know if I miss any classes which way would I be able to cover these classes will there be any extra
classes?
Hi, thank you for your question. If you miss any classes, there is no problem at all, because lecture capture is provided
for the majority of the modules and you will be able to access lecture capture anytime. Lecture captures are also
helpful for revision periods as they help to refresh the lectures and have a better understanding.
Hi everyone my name is yassine , i was subject to a conditional offer asking me a 15 in French baccalaureate and 15 in
mathematics, what if I got 14 per example
Hi I can't give a definite answer when it comes to narrowly missing the criteria. If you fully meet the offer conditions
then your place is guaranteed. Most years we have a small amount of flexibility on some grades but I cannot
guarantee this as it depends on spaces available and what grades you obtain. I'm sorry that I can't give a more
definitive answer but good luck for your assessments :)
Are first year students guaranteed accomodations? Plus if I hv a group of friends can we apply to stay in one
apartment unit in the same accomodation building?
First years are guaranteed accommodation so long as you firm Cass as your first choice and apply by the
accommodation deadline of June 30th. In regard to whether you and your friends can be assigned into the same
apartment, you will have to email our dedicated Accommodation team to get an answer for that: [email protected]
Hope that helps!

You can book a place here: https://www.city.ac.uk/applicant/visiting-us
It is also possible to visit on other days. The university has campus tours most Tuesdays at 11am and Thursdays at

Random question, but I also have interests in possibly starting my own business- does Cass provide any support in

There is great support from the University in that regard. There is a start up incubator which aims to help students get
funding and support in following their passions. It is called the City Launch lab and has a dedicated team and space for
this. There are different programmes run at the University during term time given by business professionals and there
are competitions where the best start ups can receive prizes.
Regarding text books .. is there a recommended list for Year 1 undergrads ? Is the library well stocked ?
Hi, yes. Once you join, during week 1 you will be informed about what textbooks to buy for your modules. Usually,
1 textbook per module {but some modules don't require a textbook). The library has a good number of textbooks,
but it also has e-book versions for some popular textbooks. There is also an opportunity to buy secondhand
copies of textbooks from students in older years.

What's the seating capacity of the library and opening hours ?
Hi ! We have 5 floors of the University Building dedicated to library seating at the main Northampton Square campus.
We also have the library at the Cass Building at Bunhill row and other informal and quiet study areas.
It opens at 8:30am and closes at midnight on the weekdays and from 10am to 10pm at the weekends. However, during
the exam period, it is open for 24 hours a day (although I would not recommend camping there overnight, do get
proper sleep!).
Is the library accessible during weekends and if so, till what time? Also if I have any extra questions regarding my
subject, how do I stay in contact with my teachers?
Hi you can contact your professors through weekly office hours, via email and via the module discussion forum. We
also run drop in sessions for some of the year 1 modules, whereby you can sit with a tutor to address your questions.
Is the library accessible during weekends and if so, till what time? Also if I have any extra questions regarding my
subject, how do I stay in contact with my teachers?
Hi, the library is opened during the weekend too, the opening times are as below:
Monday 08.30 - 00.00
Tuesday 08.30 - 00.00
Wednesday 08.30 - 00.00
Thursday 08.30 - 00.00
Friday 08.30 - 00.00
Saturday 10.00 - 22.00
Sunday 10.00 - 22.00
However, during the exams period, library is usually open 24 hours.
What makes accounting and finance at Cass different from other universities?
Hi Danielle. Can you tell me more about Essay project in final year. Thank you.
Hello, in which months will the exams take place?
Dr Danielle - my parents play a lot of emphasis on uni ranking by Times and CASS seems to be highly ranked for
Business MBA programs ..
How often does an international student buys a car by the time he/she is in their second year of undergraduation?
I would say its not very common for students to buy a car while studying at University in London, public transport etc
is very good and is much quicker! Parking is also at a premium, and can be an issue in central London. I drive myself
out of London, but could not envisage driving to and from University. :)
Hello, in which months will the exams take place?
Hi! Exams take place twice every academic year and normally run in January and in May. This year, it went from
the 7th-20th of January and the summer ones are scheduled from the 6th-30th of May. Hope that helps!

What makes accounting and finance at Cass different from other universities?
Cass is one of London's top business school with many world-leading professors. On the BSc Accounting & Finance
degree we have faculty teaching who have PhDs from Harvard and Yale.
There are 3 distinct features of the degree that makes us different:
1. We emphasise the applied side of the discipline, with many practical modules including Professional Skills, Visual
Basic in Excel, Econometrics and others
2. Almost every module is examined through coursework (20 to 30% weight} during the term and a final exam (70% to
80% weight). This incentivises students to work on a consistent basis and not to cram for an exam.
3. Every year of our degree carries 150 credits, which means 2 extra modules per year. This compares to 120 credits for
all other unis, so it is better value for money.
Hi if I had a health emergency during the month of final exams, how would I be able to cover any missing exams?
Thank you! Do we have exams for each module?
No problem! To quote Dr Danielle above, "Almost every module is examined through coursework (20 to 30% weight}
during the term and a final exam (70% to 80% weight). This incentivises students to work on a consistent basis and not
to cram for an exam." However, there are a couple of modules which are entirely coursework based, like Professional
Skills in the first term and Introduction to Visual Basic, which is an elective in the second term.
Hi if I had a health emergency during the month of final exams, how would I be able to cover any missing exams?
Hi, hopefully you won't suffer any ill health but should something happen we do have a mitigating circumstance
process which students should follow. Details on this are normally provided in your course handbook which you get
at the start of your degree. You would also be able to contact your Accounting & Finance course officer for
information on this.
Hi Danielle. Can you tell me more about Essay project in final year. Thank you.
Hi , the final year project is a year-long dissertation module in your final year. This is an amazing opportunity to work
on an original topic, to learn how to collect data, run statistical analyses and present your findings in a sophisticated
manner in a report of approx. 30 pages. You will have a supervisor who is an expert in the field. There is a structured
process which includes supervisory meetings where you will present your progress. Definitely a worth-while module!

require more work than other degrees.

I think learning experience is great anywhere, and it does not really matter if it is placed at big companies or
small/medium ones. Regarding micro placement, it is an amazing opportunity only available to Accounting and
Finance student. It is only available during summer time, and it usually lasts 2 to 3 weeks.Micro-placement is a choice
for both first and second year students and I would personally suggest you to consider micro-placement at the end of
year 1, as it will really help you when applying for summer internships after your second year.

Hi ! I would like to add to this answer as I am currently in the middle of applying for summer placements through the
Micro Placements programme. The placements normally take place during the summer, after the end of the
academic year and go on for 3-5 weeks. These mostly involve SME enterprises, but the experience gained from an
SME enterprise is just as valuable as one from a large business as you do pick up a lot of valuable skills. I'd strongly
recommend trying out for it!
Thanks! And in terms of becoming a chartered accountant, does the course provide any exemptions for exams?

I am under 18 years of age. Like accomodation, do I fall under any special category?
Under 18 applicants (and by this I mean those who are not yet 18 when the degree starts on16 September 2019) need
to have either one parent or two named guardians based in the UK until you turn 18. There used to be one halls of
residence that students could stay at if they were turning 18 by Christmas-time but I am not sure of current criteria so
you'd be best to ask accommodation at [email protected]. There may be events such as welcome parties in bars
that you wouldn't be allowed to attend or depending on the venue may be allowed into but not be allowed to drink
alcohol etc. but mostly you would study as normal.
Thank you so much for all the answers. This made a lot of thing clear for me.
Thanks! And in terms of becoming a chartered accountant, does the course provide any exemptions for exams?
Hi, yes it does! You can gain up to 8 exemptions from the ICAEW professional exams, 8 exemptions from the ACCA
exams and a similar level of exemptions from CIMA, CIPFA and other professional bodies by completing our degree.
Regarding finances, are there any scholarships that run throughout the duration of the degree? From Cass's website it
seems that scholarhips like the President's International Scholarship are a one-off deduction from my tuition in year 1
only.
