CHICAGO - The year 1974 willprobably be recorded by historians asthe year that the Honorable ElijahMuhammad was accorded some of theaccolades commensurate to thestruggle he has waged on behalf of theBlack man in America.

Some former critics now takingpart in the history-making eventsmaintain that the appreciation of theastronomical rise of the Nation ofIslam, by Blacks, under the leadershipof the Honorable Elijah Muhammadwill historically overshadow thesometime ideological and often selfishopposition to Islam and the rise of aseparate Black nation in America.

"The Nation of Islam is a powerthat has come," wrote Booker Griffin.

Page 6: Accomplishments of the Muslims

a reporter with the Los AngelesSentinel "Its appeal is racial and notracist. and it has the strength ofindependence and pride that is lackingin so-called practical movements."

Booker wrote that out of "ordealof stagnation, exploitation and despairthe only viable alternative visible tothousands of Black Americans is theNation of Islam, under the leadershipof the Honorable Elijah Muhammad.

He intimated that the honoring ofthe Honorable Elijah Muhammad inChicago last March 29 by no less thantraditional white ideological opponentsthe rise of Islam in America, pointed tothe appreciation and respectgenerated as a result of efforts to upliftthe so-called American Negro.

On that particular day, 1.900persons paid $50 per plate at ahospital fund-raising benefit and

testimonial dinner on behalf ofMessenger Muhammad.

That day, Illinois Governor DanWalker, and Chicago Mayor Richard J.Daley respectively declared it:"Honorable Elijah Muhammad Day" inIllinois and Chicago.

Messenger Muhammad's WestCoast Regional Representative (LosAngeles) Minister ,A.bdulKarriem said,"according to history, no messengerfrom God has received love, honor andcompassion from the people that hetaught while he lived, This..,is a first in

history. It is a first since the beginningof the sending of Messengers fromGod Himself,"

In June, some 70,000 personshelped Messenger Muhammad provethat with a constructive purpose inmind. Blacks can come together Inlarge numbers

Another 35,000 personsattended a similar Black Family dayrally in September, and the strength ofthe sentiment impelled New York'sGovernor Malcolm VIIilson to officially

proclaim "Black Family Day,"(Continued on page 6)

Similar rallies were held inPhiladelphia, Baltimore and incountless other cities, towns andhamlets throughout America.

An equally significant gesture ofappreciation and respect came in theform of invitations to theHonorable Elijah Muhammad to allowHis ministers to address such diversegatherings as the Black Law Chiefsannual convention, Black lawyersconventions. The National Business

League's Conventions and thecongregations of numerous radio andtelevision programs.

Further appreciation wasexemplified when thousands ofviewers tuned In wherever MessengerMuhammad's 1974 Saviour's DayAddress was aired.

Hlack policemen and other lawenforcement officials acknowledgedtheir respect for MessengerMuhammad especially for therehabilitating effect that His teachings, have had in re forming one-time

criminals and so-called socialundesirables.

In Indiana, Mayor RichardHatcher proclaimed December15-22 as the "Honorable ElijahMuhammad Week in Gary," whichpreceded by a few hours another eventwhich resu Ited in December 13 beingannually, "Honorable ElijahMuhammad Day" in CalumetTownship and the State of Indiana.

In Chicago, at years end, thea p pre cia t ion .0f M e sse n g e rMuhammad was marked by aMonth-long occasion' which sawwell-known celebrities such as th~Pointer Sisters, Muhammad AIL JoeWilliams, Carmen McRae and

numerous other personalitiesacknowledge the constructive andinspiring work of MessengerMuhammad.

Internationally, the praise camefrom foreign heads of state such asPrime Minister Michael Manley ofJamaica and Ambassador AldolphousTolbert of Liberia.

In receiving representatives of

the Honorable Elijah Muhammadrecently in Jamaica, Prime MinisterManley said:

" . . . I want you to convey back tothe Honorable Elijah Muhammad thatwe are proud of His work. Thatwherever people are oppressed in theworld we unite behind the purposethat inspires His work.

And you let Him know that thisprime minister of this proud countrywould be very honored to welcomeHim as our guest at any time."

These words of respect wereaccorded prior to officially welcomingMuhammad Ali to the Island.

Ambassador Tolbert of Liberiaissued a similar invitation but went abit further when he stated:

"I have a great respect for and honorthis man. I identify with this movementand with the brothers of thismovement. I'm going home to Liberiato carry the old tidings of the grandnews from the Nation of Islam and ofthe truth and of the light that we asfellow men will follow in years tocome"

Sultan Muhammad's distinction as

the youngest flight-Captain inthe country; while it is a loftyachievement; represents only aconsequential gain of his life - longobsession with flying. But by far themost cherished accomplishment ofthe 24 - year - old grandson of theHonorable Elijah Muhammad is hisrank as Personal Pilot to theMessenger of Allah.

"My grandfather alwaysencouraged me to fly," Sultan says.adding that a major incentive in hisquest for a pilot's license was theHonorable Elijah Muhammad'spromise that the aspiring aviator couldsomeday become his personal pilot.

Sultan first became interested in

flying when he was 12-years--old.and at 16 he enrolled in the flyingschool of Black aviator Emmett Stoval

at Chicago's Midway Airport. An avid student. Sultan bicycled 30

miles dai::y to and from his classes atMidway. "I tried to fly with aninstructor two hours a day, every Clay,"he recalls, and in less than twomonths, Sultan made his first solo

flight. A few months later, he made hisfirst actual distance flight. the50-mile stretch from Midway toKankakee. Illinois.

Sultan earned a private licensesix months later. and in 1970 receivedhis commercial license. In 1971 hewon a multi-rated classification,

including an instrument rating. whichauthorizes flight through cloudswithout visual references. He

completed Lear Jet training in 1972.

Sultan's single-minded fascinationwith flying, though applauded by hisparents, aroused their concern that hewould disregard a college education. The young pilot's "compromise" was adegree in Aeronautical Engineeringfrom the prestigious AerospaceInstitu te.

mathematics during childhood-hisstudies in computer science.meteorology. chemistry. advancedmathematics, and his proficiency In thetechnical aspects of flying.complemented the glamour 01 airbornetransportation.

CHICAGO - Many who arefamiliar with the discriminationpervading the printing industryconsider it a minor miracle every timeMuhammad Speaks newspaper'sgiant Goss Urbanite press roars andspins out its 900.000 copy weeklyedition.

When the Goss Urbanite waserected in 1968 for use in theMuhammad Speaks plant. it was themost advanced piece of printingequipment available. but no Black manwas qualified as web-offsetpressman.

Traditional discrimination of the

major print unions had barred entranceof any Blacks into apprenticeships inweb-offset printing. and the Gosswent up amid predictions of failurefrom veteran pressmen.

Knowledgeable advisers

estimated that it would requireapproximately six years before theM.S. crew - who had onlyrudimentary knowledge of printingfrom work on a small 215 modeloffset. some technical schooling. andtips from the Goss erectors - wouldbe sufficiently trained to produce aquality newspaper.

But remarkably enough. in 1969the printing of 400.000 top-qualitypapers for then Muhammad Speaksweekly circulation was close to reflex

At the Northwestern Associationof Printers and Lithographersconferences where the latestequipment and lithographic techniquesare displayed, Muhammad Speakspressman are conspicuously the onlyBlack attendants.

Relating the first Blackattendants' enthusiasm for knowledgeat the Printers and Lithographersconference, George 24X, aMuhammad Speaks shop foremanamong the conferees said "right awaywe wanted to know everything.

"It helped us a lot the first year"he continued, "but after that secondyear, we were beyond the stage of

most of them."

A steadily increasing circulationhad driven the M.S. pressmen intoareas alien to the comparativelysmaller pressruns of other conferees.

Problems of equipment reactionto extended 200,000 and 300,000pressruns experienced by the M.S.staff stumped participants in theconference's problem seminars andpressmanship clinics.

Forced by their own incredibleachievements to independentlydiscover solutions to extraordinaryprinting problems, the Black printerswere, by default, elevated to the statusof innovators in a highly technical, bigoted printing industry.

The Black pressmen'srevolutionary techniques in handlingunusual problems of high-volumepressruns aided equipmentmanufacturers as well as fellow

pressmen.Production Manager Majied

related how one manufacturer

prescribed a limit of 200,000impressions for a plate that he

produced. "Muhammad Speaks got400,000 or near an entire pressrun, which at that time was 500,000.

The M.S. print shop immediatelybecame the focus of study formanufacturers to verify this unheard-of achievement. Afterwards, theplate-maker boosted the price of hisproduct. "We learned from that"commented George 24X.

Alongside MuhammadSpeaks's progressive impact on theprinting industry as a whole, it issteadily revolutionizing its owntechniques and processes inanticipation of a one million copyweekly pressrun, a longtime goal ofthe Honorable Elijah Muhammad.

Some 70.000 Blacks gathered in New York last June at Black Family Day Bazaar sponsored by the Honorable ElijahMuhammad. The crowd above is proof of His teaching that Blacks can come together in large numbers for aconstructive purpose.

By Alonzo 4X

CHICAGO - After years ofslander and often outright abuse. thepopulation of this beleagueredcivilization is finally beginning to givecredit to a Messenger of God in Hisown time.

From Morristown, N.J. andSpringfield. Mass. to Philadelphia andLos Angeles, citizens and theirgovernment are giving officialrecognition to the accomplishment ofthe Honorable Elijah Muhammad inever increasing numbers.

The name Muhammad - aname that was once thought somehowalien and threatening - is being usedwith increasing frequency as asynonym of Black progress.

In New York City in particular, the Honorable Elijah Muhammad'sname has been indelibly etched intothe hearts and minds of the hugecity's populace.

In 1974, the concept of BlackFamily Day was one as a bazaartheme and the overwhelming successit enjoyed spurred the adoption of thetheme for Muslim bazaars heldthroughout the country.

The first Black Family DayBazaar, held on May 27, 1974 - thesame day Memorial Day wascelebrated - drew an estimatedcrowd of 70.000.

According to Joe Walker, M.S.New York bureau chief. the hugelysuccessfu I bazaar featured a total of515 display booths, and displays by 14foreign governments.

Shoppers were able to purchaseeverything from an exotic array ofherbs. spices. incense and jewelry. tothe more conventional items likephonographs. records. tapes, books.clothing, electrical appliances, etc.

Min. Farrakhan addressed themassive crowd and spoke about theremarkable longevity of the Nation ofIslam in the face of the destruction ofso many other Black-orientedorganizations.

"There is a Black man in AmericaAmerica that time has not destroyed,"the articulate minister noted. "There isa Black man in America who was herein the '30s. here in the' 40s, here in the'50s. in the '60s - and now in the

'70s. Elijah Muhammad is still on thescene and going strong." Min.Farrakhan said.

"Every Black person in Americashould have had the opportunity to behere today." declared Barbara Morgan

of Manhattan. The event and the tremenously

favorable reaction to it reverberated

throughout the entire New YorkMetropolitan area and on a Sept. 15

sequel - Black Family Day. Part II- then New York state Governor.Malcolm Wilson proclaimed "BlackFamily Day" in the state.

This second event. because itwas without the added consumerinterest and <,!ctivityof a bazaar. andbecause it was held on the same dayas the Black Solidarity Day parade.attracted a crowd of 35.000

Min. Farrakhan again deliveredthe major address. He directed hisremarks to the crucial problemsconfronting the very survival of theBlack family.

"We live at the most crucial timein the history of this world." he said."Messenger Elijah Muhammad isteaching us that the work we nowknow - the world of the white people.the western world - is now in thethroes of death."

In the midst of the fall of thiscivilization. the Black family must haveDivinely inspired guidelines to follow inorder to escape being crushed by theco Ilap se of the We st. theknowledgeable minister counselled.

"The Honorable ElijahMuhammad is the only man who canprovide us with a safety zone," headded.

A wide gathering of local andnational Black politicians were onhand for the rally as were UnitedNations diplomats and Black movieand television actors.

"I came to respect and honor.Messenger Muhammad and His greatwork for Black people in America,"

Most of the observations andrecommendations spawned by thevarious workshops held during the1l-ree-day gathering were equally asconcerned with maintaining an Islamicattitude in working relations as withprofessional excellence.

"We must get it out of our mindsthat we are experts because we holdvarious degrees from prestigiousuniversities, because there is only oneexpert and that's the Honorable ElijahMuhammad," declared Dr. OctaviousX (Rowe), president of the Roxbury(Mass.) Medical Training Institute.

was abruptly engulfed in a ragingthunderstorm.

Instantly the dense pattern ofstorm-clouds blotted his vision. Hard, battering rains and assaulting windcurrents delivered the light,twin-engine craft to the mercy of theelements.

Sultan skillfully manuevered theplane above the dark range of clouds, beyond the ravaging elements of thestorm as blinding flashes of lighteningand the rumbling din of thunderrecalled the bad weather below.

His big job, then, was recharting hiscourse to the Arkansas airfield thatwas lost in the storm; the proper windcorrections--the delicate settings onthe instrument panels....

"Flying through bad weather is achallenge," Sultan admitted, recalling

the experience. "I was a little nervousat first, but I made sure everything wasright and exact so Iwouldn't get lost."

Confident of his calculations, andthat the airfield lay somewhere in thevicinity, Sultan sped the aircrafttoward his charted destination.

Suddenly he spotted a break in theclowds-he dived; the airfield wasdirectly below.

The fulfillment of Sultan's dream tomaster the science of aviation is atimely compliment to the Nation ofIslam's entrance in air transportation, for air travel has always been vital tothe top level leadership in the Nationof Islam. As personal pilot to theMessenger of Allah, SultanMuhammad is constantly airborne.

But with greater business anddiolomatic contact with foreign

governments, and business enterprisesof the Nation of Islam spreadthroughout the North Americancontinent and beyond its borders, airtransportation figures as a more crucialelement in the Muslims operations.

The pride of the Muslim fleet is the4-engined Lockheed Jet Star, identical to the executive aircraft usedby the President and Vice-Presidentof the United States. This plush,10-passenger craft, which boasts allthe sophistication and comfort of the747, is at the exclusive disposal of theHonorable Elijah Muhammad, to becommandered by his grandson,Captain Sultan Muhammad.

Sultan piloted the Jet Star on a tour

throughout the country with landingsin San Francisco, Washington, D.C..Philadelphia, and New york, allowingfollowers of the Messenger to see thefruits of their sacrifice during thegO-day Jet Plane Drive to'make thepurchase.

CH ICAGO - More than 150college-trained Muslim followers ofthe Honorable Elijah Muhammad metin Chicago late last year to outline anational college program for theNation of Islam.

In addition to that number, in actual

attendance, the meeting - officiallycalled the Planning Meeting andSem inar Workshop - attractedpledges of assistance and supportfrom hundreds more who did notattend.

The coordinator of the historic

gathering, Arthur Majied Muhammad, the General Business Manager of the

Nation of Islam, said, "We're oniybeginning to do what the Messengerhas been urging us to do for manyyears.

"The Honorable ElijahMuhammad has taught us that the

implementation of the long rangeadministrative and technologicalprogram which He has planned for us

will require the. h,ighest calibre oftrained administrators, scientists, technicians and other laborers of all

levels and descriptions which we arecapable of produ cing," Bro.Muhammad noted.

According to him, the objectiveof the three day meeting was to makethe intial steps to "outline a NationalCollege program which embodiesshort and long range administrativeinstructional and academic prerequi-sites for aiding the implementation ofthe stated National goals of theHonorable Elijah Muhammad.....

He said the seminar was a totalsuccess in what it attempted to do.

Majied Muhammad, a formerauthor and holder of a masters degreein mathematics, said it is essential forthe Nation of Islam to educate our own

"national resources" for "immediate

projects which the Nation of Islam ispresently engaged in: e.g.. Templeadministration, international trade andcommerce. national and international

methods of modern transportation andcommunication, and national and

local businesses such as Muhammad

Speaks newspaper, the national fishprogram, farms, supermarkets.restaurants, etc."

Sis. Mary holder of a masters ofsocial work, degree said the

unprecedented meeting was a "verypositive step in the right direction."

Although most participants werecollege graduates, including many withpost-graduate degrees. they readilyacknowledged the limits of theiracademic training as it compared tothe knowledge given them byMessenger Muhammad.

Award-the familiar ringside jovialityof Muhammad Ali the boxer wasreplaced by the soberdemeanor of askilled diplomat.

When asked to exhibit the famous

"Ali shuffle" at the officialwelcomingceremony during the Jamaican visit.Ali responded, "Its time to be serious!I won't do the shuffle! We're talkingabout Black people being free,

respecting their brothers, respectingtheir women, and ruling themselves!"

Statesmen were awed by Ali'srespectful and polished demeanor

during the White House tour. Thoughhe was applauded throughout theworld as a great athlete, the noblecharacter oftheMuslim athlete provedequally praiseworthy.

Mayor Richard J. Daley of Chicagolauded the fighter for his "clean way oflife," and Jamaican Prime MinisterMichael Manley called Muhammad Alia "model for Jamaican youth."

Forever humble, wearing theaccolades of politicalkingmakers andinternational statesmen as easily as hegarnishes the heavyweight boxingcrown, Muhammad Ali told audiencesthat the secret of his success was his"deep religious conviction" and hisdevotion to the Honorable Elijah

Muhammad."I give all my credit and praises to

God: Allah: because I know that I amnot really that powerful or great."

But Ali'sstatus as the worldheavyweight boxing champion, andworld renowned personality is viewedfrom a religious perspective, and asmany writers have observed, hissupport among young Blacksincorporates a lively element ofrelig ious fervor.

"I believe I have a purpose to do allI can to help my people here inAmerica for decency, self-respect.uniting and cleaning themselves up,"
