Adelaide is a very liveable city with a
cosmopolitan character and a population
made up of over 100 different ethnic
communities.
Adelaide is a busy and vibrant city, but unlike
some o the larger capitals, getting around is
quick and easy and trac jams are rare. With
a welcoming atmosphere and a mild climate,
Adelaide oers a relaxed liestyle with the
conveniences o city living.
The North Terrace campus o the University
o Adelaide is set in the cultural heart o the
city, minutes rom the central business andshopping districts.
There are many opportunities to live close
to University with a range o accommodation
options available within walking distance
or a short bus ride. Depending on the type
o accommodation you choose, single
students will generally need to budget between
$175300 per week or living expenses. I you
live in University-managed accommodation,
your ees will generally cover the majority o
your living expenses. Students accompanied
by amily members would usually nd private
rental accommodation more suitable than
other options.

of the city campus.

Accommodation option
The University enjoys a strong aliation withve independent residential colleges across
Adelaide. The University does not administer
residential colleges.
Our association with each college enables
the University to oer its students access to
a ully catered accommodation option where
most meals and a weekly room clean are
incorporated into the accommodation ee.
Residential colleges are located close to the
city within 1520 minutes walking distance
rom the North Terrace campus and 1525minutes bus/bicycle ride rom Thebarton
and Waite campuses.
Most college rooms are single study
bedrooms but some twin share rooms may
be available. Each has a bed, mattress,
wardrobe, mirror, desk, chair and bookshel.
Some provide ensuite bathrooms, air-
conditioning and desk lamp as well. Most
rooms are equipped with telephones, voice
mail and Internet access. Charges or
heating/cooling*, electricity and cleaning are
usually included in the price.
All colleges are co-residential. Three meals
per day (including a packed lunch, i
necessary) are usually provided and students
with special dietary needs may be catered
or upon request.*Please note: charges will be made for excessive use.

Homestay
Living or boarding in a home with a local

Private rental and shareaccommodation
The University Accommodation Service can
assist you in nding accommodation through
the Rental Database, which lists privaterental property and shared accommodation
options available or rent.
The database, which is updated daily and
ree o charge, is available to enrolled students
with a University username and password.
An average house or apartment usually
consists o a lounge and/or dining room,
bathroom, toilet, laundry, kitchen and one to
our bedrooms. The cost depends on actors
such as location, quality and size, and
whether it is urnished or not.
Most houses and apartments areunurnished so you need to buy or rent
urniture and other household items.

Students are advised not to secure
accommodation in the private rental market
without having had the opportunity to
inspect the property o interest.
Most property owners require a
12-month lease.
Initial expenses are high, as it is necessary to
pay a minimum o two weeks rent in advance
and a security deposit equal to a maximum
o six weeks rent (always obtain a receipt
or these payments). You may need to pay
charges or connecting electricity, telephone
and gas.
Signing a lease imposes certainresponsibilities so you need to ensure you
understand these obligations. Inringements
could lead to legal proceedings and expense.

Sharing a rented house or apartment with
the other people is generally the most
economical and fexible orm o student
housing.
Usually, each person has their own bedroom,

cost o household goods, security bond and
connection o services.

SUBSIDISEDACCOMMODATION
This housing is accommodation subsidised by the University oAdelaide. It is provided primarily or frst-year students who are
assessed as experiencing fnancial or special needs. The scheme is a
way o assisting students beore they move into the private rental market.
Receipt o an Austudy/Abstudy/Youth Allowance by itsel is not a
qualication. Special need can cover students who are homeless,
students moving rom interstate with no amily support or students
moving rom a rural area.
The scheme oers a range o o-campus houses and fats convenient to
the Adelaide and/or Waite campusesgenerally within a 5 km radius.
Students are oered an initial term o six months with some opportunity
or an extension or a urther six months.
Rent varies depending on the type o housing, location and utilitiesincluded. Students are required to pay an up-ront bond and two weeks
rent in advance.
