− Money given from a donor to an organisation, groups of individuals or individual persons.

− Usually based on a formal proposal and an agreement on how the money will be spent.

− No repayment necessary, reimbursement might be required if agreement not honoured

− In Guyana, usually in the context of 'development aid

Donor – Any agency or organisation which offers grants.

Bi-lateral development agencies− USAID, AusAID, EU*, CIDA, Hivos, DFID, JICA,

etc Multi-lateral development agencies

− UN organisations , IADB, Global Fund for TB/HIV/AIDS

− Based on programmes agreed between agencies and Government

Government− Eg Clean Up Guyana, etc

Private foundations (Astraea, McArthur, Ford, etc )

Some are advertised publicly, some are discretionary

How do we meet the criteria? Preparing our organisations

− Registration Burial & Friendly Society, Trust Deed, Non-profit

Company

− Governance and accountability Annual Reports, Audit Reports, Minutes of meetings,

etc

− Implementation of activities related to your mission

− Visibility – all media including social media, advocacy

− Networking with donors

− Remember to keep electronic copies of everything

How do we meet the criteria? Checking donor criteria

− Is it our area of interest? Ca we make their area of interest our area of interest without losing focus of our mission?

− Is the grant in our geographic area? How will we reach the intended population? Is it outside of our constituency?

− Do we have the experience they require?

− Do we have the capacity to spend the money in the time allocated?

− How much money/contributions do we have to show?

− Should we collaborate with others?

− Are we guaranteed to get the grant? Is it worth the effort to write the proposal(s)?
