ANNEX A - ENGINEERING COMMITTEE CODES

ANNEX B - ORDERING INFORMATION AND FORMS

This catalog is divided into discrete sections that denote thevarious Sectors and Groups that make up the entities of EIA.Both EIA and the Telecommunications Industry Association(TIA) are separately accredited as Standards DevelopingOrganizations (SDOs) by the American National StandardsInstitute (ANSI). Alliance entities such as the ConsumerElectronics Association (CEA), Electronic ComponentsAssemblies, Equipment & Materials Association (ECA),Government Electronics and Information TechnologyAssociation (GEIA), and JEDEC Solid State TechnologyAssociation all use the EIA accreditation when promulgatingAmerican National Standards and publications (ANSI/EIAdesignation). When developing EIA-only standards andpublications, these same groups may publish EIA-designated documents or publish their own, e.g., JEDECstandards and publications. TIA uses its own accreditation whenseeking ANSI designations (ANSI/TIA/EIA).

1) The initial section of the catalog is a master numeric index of all Alliance entities’ standards and publications. These entries are organized in numeric order, regardless of prefix.

2) EIA and TIA standards that are ANSI approved standardsare integrated with all of the bulletins and publicationswithin the same subject matter.

3) Each document listing provides the following information:• Document Number• Title• Corresponding ANSI Reference Number (if applicable)• Brief Document Description• Product Code• Date of Publication• Formulating Committee• Purchase Price

Searching for a document can be accomplished by using one of the two following methods:

1. NUMBER: If you know the document number, proceeddirectly to the master numeric index in the front and look up the document.

2. PRODUCT CODE: The catalog is organized into nineproduct codes. The Product Codes are divided into thefollowing categories:

Product Code 1 Department CommitteesProduct Code 2 Consumer ElectronicsProduct Code 3 TelecommunicationsProduct Code 4 Passive ComponentsProduct Code 5 Solid State TechnologyProduct Code 6 Electronic Display & TubesProduct Code 7 Systems & ProcessesProduct Code 9 Industrial AutomationProduct Code 10 Design AutomationProduct Code 11 Quality & Reliability

Searching for a document by using the Master Numeric Index, followed by an explanation for each part of the listing, isillustrated below:

1) PrefixThe prefix identifies which standards-writing organizationdeveloped the standard.

2) Document NumberThe document number will consist of an alphabeticalprefix followed by a number and, in some cases, a suffix.

3) Page NumberIdentifies the section and the page number within thesection that the standard is located.

4) TitleThe official title as shown on the standard.

5) ANSI Reference NumberIf the standard has been approved as an American NationalStandard, its ANSI number is listed in parentheses after the title. The last two digits of the sequence indicate theyear of approval or reaffirmation as an ANSI approvedstandard.

1) Primary Subject HeadingDocuments are initially identified by a primary subjectheading. This heading encompasses a large generic areaof information. Primary subjects that have few documentsnormally will not have secondary subject headings.

Secondary Subject HeadingTo assist more easily in the identification of documents, a secondary subject heading that more narrowly definestopics is included.

2) PrefixesSince TIA evolved from the Information TechnologyGroup of EIA, some of the telecommunications standardscreated before 1988 have a prefix “EIA.” After TIA wasformed in 1988, and before it became directly ANSI-accredited, TIA continued to issue standards using EIA’sstandards-making procedures. Standards issued duringthis period are designated “EIA/TIA.” TIA became anindependently ANSI-accredited standards-developingorganization in 1992 and all new or revised telecommu-nications standards are labeled “TIA/EIA.” Regardless of prefix, all standards related to telecommunications are developed and maintained by TIA EngineeringCommittees and Subcommittees. (Product Category 3groups all telecommunications standards together andserves as an easy reference.) Standards not related totelecommunications are developed and maintained by EIA Engineering Committees and Subcommittees andcontinue to have the prefix “EIA.”

Until 1986, some standards bore the prefix “RS” for“Recommended Standard.” Although this prefix has become obsolete, people may use the term RS whenreferring to standards. An example of a popular standardwhich is often referred to with its old prefix is RS-232.

As evidenced in this catalog, the correct title is:TIA/EIA-232-F, Interface Between Data TerminalEquipment and Data Circuit-Terminating EquipmentEmploying Serial Binary Data Interchange(ANSI/TIA/EIA-232-F-97). Any stock of documentsbearing the obsolete RS prefix was authorized to be sold since the content had not changed.

Joint StandardsIf a standard has been developed in cooperation withanother standards-writing body, that body is also listed inthe title of the document, such as “EIA/NARM Standardsfor Dry Reed Relays for Circuit Board Mounting” or“EIA/IPC/ANSI/J-STD” for the new joint series onsoldering.

Interim Standards, Bulletins and PublicationsAs previously described, the catalog contains a widevariety of documents in addition to ANSI standards.Within a subject heading, standards or specifications aregrouped together in numerical order and listed first, followed by a listing of any related documents such asinterim standards, bulletins, and publications. Theserelated documents will be grouped in alphabetical order byprefix, and then in numerical order within a given prefix.

3) Document NumberThe document number will consist of an alphabeticalprefix followed by a number and, in some cases, a suffix.

4) Suffixes

Revised DocumentsStandards and other technical documents are periodicallyrevised. When this occurs, and the revised document ispublished after issuance of any current catalog, it becomes

the current document—not the issued document listed inthe catalog. Revised documents retaining the same basicdocument number can be identified by their alphabeticalsuffixes; e.g., “A” for first revision, “B” for secondrevision, and so on. For example, EIA/TIA-455-48-Bwould indicate that it is the second revision of thisstandard.

Rescinded or Superseded DocumentsDocuments that have been rescinded or superseded arelisted in the Master Numeric Index with replacementinformation, if applicable. For example, TSB-28 is listedin the Master Numeric Index as having been incorporatedinto EIA-603.

5) AddendaOccasionally a standard or specification is released andmaterial relevant to the document has not been included in its content. An addendum or a supplement to thestandard or specification is prepared and maintains thesame designated document number, followed by “1” forfirst addendum, “2” for second addendum, and so on. For example, EIA-209-A-1 would indicate that it is thefirst addendum to the document EIA-209-A.

Series of Test ProceduresBoth EIA and TIA have developed a series of testprocedures for specific products. A group of testprocedures is linked together by the preassigned series-designated number. Then, within each series, the testprocedures are listed numerically. The actual assignednumber of the test procedure is indicated by the number inthe suffix. For example, in the Fiber Optic Test Procedure(FOTP) 455 Series, the listing for “TIA/EIA-455-99”indicates that this is the 99th FOTP in the 455 series.Another series listed in the catalog is the EIA-364 Series, which covers all connector test procedures published inEIA-364-B. Each test procedure in this series is known as“TP-xx.” The TIA/EIA-526 Series covers test proceduresfor optical fiber systems and each test procedure in thisseries is known as “OFSTP-xx.”

6) TitleThe official title as listed on the standard or document isshown.

7) ANSI Reference NumberIf the standard has been approved as an American NationalStandard, its ANSI number is listed within parenthesesafter the title. The number listed indicates its ANSIdesignation, such as ANSI/TIA/EIA-232-F-97 orANSI/EIA-431-92. The last two digits of the sequenceindicate the year of approval or reaffirmation as an ANSIStandard.

8) Document DescriptionA brief description extracted from the introduction of the document is provided, when available.
