Earth and Animal’s Day May 3rd, 2013
On May 3rd, the Access students had their first cultural activity of the year. In order to
celebrate Earth Day and Animal’s Day, commemorated April 22nd and 29th respectively, met in
the auditorium of ARICANA headquarters to carry out some activities related to these special
days. The students watched the documentary "Earth" by Disney, which shows and describes
the journey of some animals in their quest for survival. At the end of the film, students were
divided into groups according to the different topics of the movie: polar bears, the boreal
forest, caribous and the forest, the rainforest, elephants, birds’ migration, humpback whales
and the Antarctica. They worked on some activities to check their understanding and discussed
the different issues. After the group work, students wrote individual promises to show their
commitment to protect the environment and all of them were then displayed on a poster.

Earth and Animal’s Day May 3rd, 2013
For this activity we saw the movie Earth and some volunteers were given roles with activities
about the movie and we also wrote in a round piece of paper a promise to take care of the
environment. I had to work in the group of the jungle. It was interesting because I learned a lot
about the animals in our planet and their characteristics and habits, among other things. I really
liked the movie. It is a very beautiful film and shows how awesome our planet is.

Cordoba Immersions Camp May 29th to 31st, 2013
From May 29th to 31st, in Tanti, Córdoba, the US Embassy organized a camp called Cordoba
Immersions. Students from the Access program from the 14 Binational Centers in our country
attended this camp and ARICANA was represented by the students Tamara Merello, Sebastian
Merino and Brian Salazar (Access 2A), Nicolas Cianni and Franco Coraglio (Access 2C) and
Yazmín Pollo, a former Access student.
Apart from the integration and work team activities, the camp’s main project was to carry out
a silent movie simulating Back to the Future. The students were able to act, dress and makeup
as real actors. The experience also allowed them to practice their English not only with other
students of the program but also with members of the embassy who participated in the camp.

It was an important opportunity to learn, to integrate and to have fun. It’s worth saying that
these students had the chance to participate in this camp because of their performance and
commitment to the program Access they have shown.
The best activity I did was to participate in the movie Back to the future. The place was very large and beautiful
with great natural surroundings. What I liked the most was to make new friends and participating in the movie.
This experience helped me improve my English because we were most of the time speaking English.

Democracy Lesson June 3rd to 4th, 2013
n June 3rd and 4th, Access students from second year had a special class about
democracy. This was part of the contest organized by the US State Department and
the US Embassy in Buenos Aires, which had the objective of having students learn and
discuss about democracy and other values that this implies. First, students watched a video
explaining the meaning of democracy and worked with some listening comprehension
activities. After this, they completed a mind map with the main concepts related to democracy
and then, discussed some situations in which democracy was present or not. Finally, they were
assigned a piece of writing for homework, which then participated in the contest. Students
were able to reflect upon very important values such as justice, freedom and opportunity.
Good luck to all the students who participated in the writing contest!

Paige LaPoint’s visit June and July, 2013
Access students received the visit of Paige LaPoint, an intern student form Wisconsin,
who stayed in Rosario and worked at A.R.I.C.A.N.A for about a month. Paige showed
students a Power Point presentation about her life and told them about the lifestyle in
the US. Before this, students were given some words and phrases related to Paige’s life
in order to predict what they meant and then check their predictions by listening to
her. After the presentation, they started a discussion comparing and contrasting the
lifestyles in Argentina and the United States. The students had a great time listening
and practicing their English with a native American girl. Thanks for sharing Paige!

liked the visit because she told us a lot about her life and we learned how they live.
Narella Butice – Access 2A.
I remember something about her favorite food, she loves peanut butter. And she also
loves the chocolate cake. The life in the United States is similar to the life in Argentina,
but in other aspects it is different. For example, the American parades are big and a lot
of people attend. One similarity is the people because in both countries they are helpful

The life in the US is quieter and safer. The most interesting thing was life in the University. We have some

and told them about some of the programs the US Embassy has to offer to them.
Gabriela Venesia, Access Program General Coordinator, also spoke with students and
congratulated them for having this scholarship and encouraged them to give their best
during these two years. We really hope you will enjoy this experience and make the
most of every moment in it. Congratulations and good luck!
In the opening ceremony, when Gabriela

Access Winter School July 8th, 10 th and 11 th 2013
During the first week of Winter break, Access students in the first year had the Winter School
and attended special classes on three different topics: American and Argentinean
Independence Day, Friendship Day and Culture (TV shows, sports, music and education). They
worked with the computers in the Lab, with videos, Power Point Presentations and the E-Beam
tool. The purpose of the Winter School is that students don’t lose the contact with the
language for so long and they can practice it using different engaging tools. One of the most
interesting activities consisted of sending letters to e-pals from other cities and countries such
as Palestine, Sri Lanka, Lebannon, Uruguay and Mendoza. Let’s see what they tell us about
their experience at the Winter school.
During the Winter School we learned about
Independence Day and Friendship Day. We

children’s rights. They met on Friday August 23 at ARICANA to plan the activities they would
carry out on Sunday August 25 at a local park. The activities involved cutting out hands made
with eva foam, writing messages on them and preparing a banner. On Sunday, at the park,
everyone was invited to leave their hand print on the banner and was given an eva foam hand
with a message, encouraging everyone to help promote children’s rights. The students showed
a great commitment with the activities and worked all together in order to make the project a
real success.

Mary McBride. September 24th 2013.
On September 24th, Access 2D students had the chance to meet a famous
country music band from the United States - Mary McBride and her band.
They played a couple of songs and then talked with the students about their
lives as musicians. In the evening, they attended a concert the band gave at
Sala Lavarden and they took a picture all together. The students were really
excited about having the opportunity to talk to Native Americans and real
musicians.
Mary McBride was born in Louisiana
but raised in the Washington, D.C.,
she took to music at an early age.
Mary McBride and her band have
realised four albums: “Everything
Seemed Alright”, “By Any Other
Name”, “Every Day Is a Holiday”
and “The Way Home”.
I’m excited for the visit. I have never heard of them before.
They play country music and sound really well. Before the show we did an interview and asked them questions
about their careers, for example “Why do you play country music?” It was a really good and funny experience.
I love learning new things!

Country music is a genre of American popular
music that originated in the rural regions of
the Southern United States in the 1920s. It takes
its roots from the southeastern genre
of American folk music and Western
music. Country music often consists of ballads
and dance tunes with generally simple forms and
harmonies accompanied by mostly string
instruments such as banjos, electric and acoustic
guitars, fiddles, and harmonicas.

Youth Citizen Program. October.
Students participated in the Youth Citizenship Program, organized
by the NGO OAJNU (Argentinian Youth Organization for the
United Nations). The program consists of 4 special classes
delivered by members of the NGO in which students learned
about citizenship, values and human rights. Then, they have to
plan and organize a project to deal with a problem they find in
their city or community. The three courses decided to work on the
topics of bullying, environmental pollution and garbage classification.
Access 1A: Garbage classification.
Access 1A carried out a project to encourage people to classify garbage in order to make the
recycling process easier. They decorated trash bins with paint and ribbons and made posters
with information about the importance of classifying and recycling garbage. Then, they divided
into 3 groups and put the trash bins in their schools and in the Binational Center. They also
visited some the classrooms to tell the students about the project and to encourage them to
use the bins.

This project had the aim of raising children’s awareness about bullying. They invented and
acted out a situation in which a boy was suffering from bullying. The short play was shown to
fifth graders in a public school. After this, the students talked to the kids in order to reflect
upon what they had just seen and upon their own experiences with bullying.
We ran a project together with OAJNU. We decorated some garbage bins to recycle paper, plastic and
cardboard. We put 2 bins in each school. Our school is Zona Parque and we showed them to the
