Broadband stimulus (BBS) has been a hot topic for the past several years. With the three-year milestone approaching where do things stand in the market?

There is no doubt ADTRAN was a major winner in the BBS arena. Over the past three years, ADTRAN has gained over 140 new Fiber-to-the-Home (FTTH) customers, making it the fastest growing vendor for FTTH deployments. More importantly, ADTRAN’s success is not only attributed to the depth and breadth of its FTTH oering, but to the exibility and multiservice capabilities provided by the Total Access 5000.

ADTRAN’s full-featured multi-service edge platform has been its single biggest advantage in FTTH technology. None of the competitors support the breadth of copper and ber technologies and services from a single platform that are supported by the Total Access 5000. In fact, this platform can even provide wavelength services utilizing both Ethernet and Optical Transport Network (OTN) service constructs (as defined by ITU G.709) that support both the uniquely high capacity, ultra-low latency and specialized protocols required to support next-generation mobile backhaul applications. Whether the need is for point-to-point GPON, redundant GigE, fiber rings or wavelength services, ADTRAN is unique because this can all be ac-complished from a single platform.

ADTRAN has leveraged this strength to grow the number of Total Access 5000 systems deployed to exceed a 50 percent average quarterly growth rate.

Active Ethernet has emerged as a key area of product dierentiation for ADTRAN. The FTTH market is in the early stages of fiber-optic penetration and will see continued investment as service providers around the world roll out high-bandwidth, packet-based, premium services for residential, business and backhaul applications using fiber-optic connections.

ADTRAN believes that FTTH is one of the staples of the access network and, to that end, has worked to understand what has to be done to become a true leader in this space in the global market. ADTRAN is committed to the FTTH market, not only with the advent of new features and functionality, but with signicant research and development investment aimed at technology enhancements that will further development, improve operations and increase network reliability.

As networks continue to get more sophisticated, the need for advanced features including enhanced trac management, higher density, and increased bandwidth are driving new Optical Line Terminals (OLT) and switch fabrics to support them. From a technology perspective, ADTRAN continues to monitor the market to make sure it is pursuing the correct technologies.

FTTH has long been viewed as the final frontier in terms of delivering ultra-high speed services. However, deployment has been challenging due to a number of factors, with cost being at the top of the list. FTTH also hit a stumbling block in browneld applica-tions where environmental conditions simply make it cost prohibitive. According to the FTTH Council there were nearly 75 million FTTH sub-scribers worldwide at the end of 2012. Of that number, Europe had only 10.3 million subscribers with North America at 9.7 million. That being said, there is still a long way to go before reaching the all-fiber frontier.

The latest solution for high-speed service delivery over existing fa-cilities is VDSL2 vectoring. This technology, simply put, eliminates the crosstalk between binder groups of copper pairs, allowing the high-est service level to be achieved. With VDSL2 vectoring, speeds of 100 Mbps and beyond can be achieved. Vectoring can also be used to ex-tend the reach of 50 Mbps service.

Yes, I said vectoring can be a migration path to FTTH. So, how does this work? Because the network has evolved over time, there is a massive installed base of copper plant. Many think that copper is dead, but vectoring is reinventing the network. Through vectoring, you breathe new life into copper. Vectoring is enabling service providers to reach their customers with high-speed services at a fraction of the cost of laying fiber all the way to the home. But it can also be used to deliver 50-100 Mbps services to a wider service area for those same service providers oering FTTH.

The real goal is to extend high-speed broadband services to as many customers as quickly as possible. As a service provider, why not use vectoring to extend 50 Mbps services to the bulk of your customer base now while you implement your FTTH plan? FTTH rollout is not quick or cheap, but augmenting with VDSL2 vectoring can allow you to retain the customers you have today while competing against cable operators and DOCSIS 3.0. VDSL2 vectoring is here. It’s here to stay. FTTH and vectoring are not the arch enemies they have been painted to be. Instead, they are two means to an end, existing in parallel.

Is this a replacement for ber? No. It is a transition to an all-ber future.

So, is vectoring a replacement for FTTH?

Will vectoring slow the adoption of FTTH?

Are these two approaches bitter enemies or can they happily co-exist?Well, I contend that rather than competing they are actually complementary. Here are a few facts:

Fact: Operators cannot aord to rollout FTTH through their entire network in the short term.

Fact: There are some areas that are simply cost-prohibitive and will likely never be served by FTTH.

Fact: Service providers already have an installed base of copper which can be leveraged at a fraction of the cost of ber.

Fact: VDSL2 vectoring can be used as a migration path to FTTH.

  • GET SMART

The emerging reality of the Smart Home is not only foreseeable; it’s unavoidable

  • “It’s just inevitable. We don’t see any scenario in which the need for capacity will decrease.” - Heather Burnett Gold, President of the FTTH Council Americas

    ACCESS | Fall Issue 2013 11

Now, as you read this article, the FTTH Council has already hosted its premier North American event, the FTTH 2013 Conference & Expo in Tampa, Florida. Perhaps you were there, among the approximately 1,500 attendees, to participate, interact and learn about the exciting new technologies that will open up new, all-encompassing economic and social advantages for consumers, as well as major new revenue streams for service providers and vendors.

Of course, this sea of change will come at a cost. The question is: Will telecoms and cable companies respond quickly enough to reap their share of the rewards?

The investment in broadband ber deployment can be sizeable. But few can argue with the logic or the need, now that a strong case is being made for more fully connected homes, leading to Smart Homes reminiscent of The Jetsons cartoon depictions.

At the most basic level, a Smart Home is one in which there is a connection between various wired or wireless devices and appliances via a common platform that enables them to com-municate with each other and with the consumer. The home networking evolution has already begun to occur with the proliferation of gaming and entertainment systems, computer downloads, streaming and more.

A look at what the very near future holds.A couple of weeks prior to the conference, we spoke with Heather Burnett Gold, President of the FTTH Council Americas, to explore this move toward expanded, ultra-high speed broadband fiber that will empower innova-tion. What she had to say was both promising and somewhat daunting.

The conversation started with Gold announcing that, during the conference, Corning is going to demonstrate a 60 GHz internal home wireless connection that is optimized by FTTH-enabled networks. This seemed an appropriate prelude to the topic of mass market demand, access to more sophisticated home networking and the all-but-inevitable migration to integrated Smart Homes, where security, remote surveillance, entertainment systems, IPTV, Internet radio, computers, thermostat, lighting and electrical usage are all controlled from a smart phone, tablet computer or similar device.

Gold continued, “I think the interesting thing is, in this country in particular, there has been a lot of focus on wireless and not as much on ber to the home. But that is rapidly changing as people and the industry are realizing that multiple wired and wireless devices in the home need increased broadband in order to operate eectively. To accommodate an entire family, who are all using their own separate devices for dierent purposes, simultaneously, it is very apparent that more bandwidth will be required. It’s just inevitable. We don’t see any scenario in which the need for capacity will decrease.”

In fact, the trend is moving like a torrent in the other direction. Con-sider that only a very few years ago, “triple play” service was thought to be the big up-sell opportunity for service providers. Now it’s the price of entry. The same scenario is happening with IPTV and IP Vid-eo on Demand (VoD), along with the explosion of new applications accessible via cloud-based solutions. Of course, as the adoption of new devices increases, so naturally will service providers be encour-aged to take a hard look at FTTH deployment and the substantial revenue that new product bundles can generate.

  • A vast array of video applications and devices have pushed the limits of broadband usage. There are many growing areas and exciting possibilities for home networks, but access and capacity will contin-ue to be the keys. Gold pointed out that, “Video, in and of itself, has been an amazing accelerator of broadband demand. I recently read that Netix, alone, carries over 30% of the world’s Internet trac at any given time.”

“It’s also worth noting that 40% of U.S. and Canada subscribers are accessing the Internet for video, and when you look at the under 35 market, the number jumps to 70%.”

Surprisingly, Gold noted that bandwidth requirements for homes are generally higher than for small businesses. This phenomenon is driven by all of the additional devices and applications in use in the home. Usage will only ratchet up as energy eciency of Smart Homes begin to translate into cost savings from lower utility consump-tion as lights are set to turn on and o at certain times… temperatures are adjusted to conserve energy when homeowners are away...or any device can go to sleep and wake up on command.

It has already gotten to the point where buyers of houses and condos are willing to pay a premium if the home is connected to ber.

Future-proofing networks using fiber can result in less maintenance, better return on investment.By deploying FTTH, service providers don’t have to continually worry about how to get the most out of what they already have, which also means less patchwork, maintenance and repairs. “They won’t have to go back every few years and upgrade the system. Also, only ber can provide unlimited bandwidth, because providers merely have to change out the electronics on the subscriber end if they need to deliver faster speeds,” said Gold.

Fiber has also proven to be very reliable over time compared to alternative high-bandwidth options. However, demand and the threat of competition are what will ultimately force service providers to make the decision in favor of FTTH. Gold observed, “The real driver of FTTH deployments in the U.S. to date has been in Tier 2 and 3 markets. For these service providers, this has become an economic and social imperative. It isn’t a matter of competition, because a lot of these entities are the incumbents. But they understand that to remain economi-cally viable and to continue to oer their customers a better quality of life, this is something they have to do.

“Video, in and of itself, has been an amazing accelerator of broadband demand. I recently read that Netflix, alone, carries over 30% of the world’s Internet traffic at any given time.”- Heather Burnett Gold, President of the FTTH Council Americas

  • Communities are also coming to understand that they have a role to play in making FTTH a feasible solution, and many are willing to bring some of their own resources to the table to make it happen.”

Service providers have many critical decisions to make – not just when and how to upgrade – but juggling upgrade costs, speed of deployment, and balancing optimal performance and customer satisfaction. Compli-cating the decision are things like the underlying design and testing criterion required to construct and certify FTTH networks that accommodate ultra-broadband services.

Gold concluded, “I really believe that service providers will recognize the amazing potential of FTTH and the Smart Home, and they will embrace the technology as many of them already have.”

Partnering with KGP Logistics and BlueStream can help ease the burden of FTTH deployments.KGP Logistics and BlueStream Professional Services, together, have extensive experience in helping to assess, plan, engineer, supply and implement ber broadband networks.

Both companies work with a multitude of industry-leading manufacturers and have the systems, advanced capabilities and practical know-how to reduce installation times, and more importantly, cut costs.

About the FTTH Council AmericasThe Fiber-to-the-Home (FTTH) Council Americas is a non-prot association consisting of companies and organiza-tions that deliver video, Internet and/or voice services over high-bandwidth, next-generation or direct ber-optic connection, as well as companies that manufacture FTTH products. • With control of the local broadband loop, many service providers are in an enviable position that allows them to oer advanced services such as centralized HD video surveillance to subscribers with almost no incremental operational cost. In most ber, cable, and DSL deployments today, the majority of subscribers vastly underutilize the full capacity of the upstream path in the local loop. This presents a revenue opportunity for many providers that are able to oer new recurring revenue services that take advantage of the excess capacity between the premise and the datacenter or central oce – without inating Internet costs.

Service providers often restrict upstream access rates in order to benet from more protable advanced service tiers for customers that demand higher bandwidth capacity and Internet access. Customers with high upstream requirements may be serious gamers or businesses that deliver high volumes of data to customers. Although this sector may represent a small segment of the subscriber base, oering enhanced services with a broader appeal to subscribers can increase demand for additional bandwidth and expand the revenue opportunity for service providers.

However, not all cloud-based solutions are equal. If the new service significantly increases Internet traffic and the associated costs, or delivers mediocre performance due to factors beyond the control of the provider, the anticipated prots may never materialize (Figure 1). Hosting a private cloud for video surveillance in the datacenter helps manage the cost of Internet trac and increase monthly recurring revenues.

We have all seen grainy do-it-yourself surveillance solutions that some businesses purchase for self-monitoring. Although these oerings have a market, many customers shy away from the relative poor quality. By oering subscribers the opportunity to purchase HD-quality video surveillance—at a competitive price—both the service provider and the subscriber benets from superior quality. In addition, when deployed as one element in a comprehensive set of smart-premise services, the value to the business, farm, or residential subscriber increases exponentially.

Delivery of these high-value services can be accomplished through a private or hybrid cloud architecture (Figure 2) that eciently uses application and storage servers in the datacenter, a simple gateway, IP cameras and other smart devices at the customer premise and the cloud to satisfy the on-the-go-subscriber with access to video playback (Figure 3) and administration. The elimination of complicated and costly equipment, such as NVR, DVR, servers, and storage arrays at the customer premise can also dramatically decrease installation costs and reduce the need for onsite service calls.

today, the majority of subscribers vastly underutilize the full capacity of the upstream path in the local loop. • With the private cloud approach, managing customer video archive requirements is easily accomplished in the datacenter with simple partitioning that is common in cloud and network based storage solutions. The shared pool of resources gives the service provider the exibility to expand a customer’s storage capacity with a simple command process as needed. This eliminates the need for truck rolls and installation of additional on premise equipment that would be required for premise based solutions. And adjusting the upstream bandwidth limits is a simple command as well.

The datacenter-based cloud approach gives the service provider the advantage of storage eciency and reduced operational expense while tapping the excess upstream network capacity. Using this model, the provider can leverage the existing infrastructure to deliver new value-added services like HD video to generate greater prots with only minimal incremental costs. Any way you slice it, it’s a winning combination.
