The EIT Health Accelerator

The EIT Health Accelerator creates an ecosystem where innovation can thrive. It gathers the best and brightest health entrepreneurs, and provides them with the support, skills and services they need to get their ideas off the ground and into the market.

The Accelerator is open to all business ideas from entrepreneurs connected to the EIT Health community. It supports entrepreneurs connected to our partners, learners emerging from EIT Health Campus projects and innovators from the EIT Health Innovation Projects. For individual support, please refer to the contacts section to contact your regional Business Creation Manager for guidance in choosing the most suitable activities for you In the INCUBATE! activity line entrepreneurial training and support activities, we help entrepreneurs create a business plan out of an initial business idea. These programmes vary in length from two to twelve months, and offer entrepreneurs an international perspective and the opportunity to build their network with leading health organisations. Furthermore, local training activities are organised to augment existing programmes at EIT Health Co-Location Centres (CLCs), with a focus on key skills in the healthcare sector. The VALIDATE! activity line helps start-ups and entrepreneurs to continuously improve their ventures with access to suitable living labs and test beds, mentoring and coaching expertise within the community, and to gain an understanding of local/regional regulatory and reimbursement schemes. The SCALE! activity line focuses on developing tools and networks that can provide financing for projects and smaller SMEs, as well as facilitating access to potential investors including angel networks, corporate financers and crowd funders. Furthermore, internationalisation programmes support European start-ups and scale-ups in the domain of Medtech, Biotech and Digital Health so that they can expand within Europe, the United States, Korea, China, Japan, and Canada. This business creation supply chain supports the acceleration of innovation projects and access to relevant facilities for start-ups and SMEs throughout the consortium. The Accelerator is open to applications from all entrepreneurs, start-ups, scaleups, and SMEs in Europe. .1 Activity Summary The table below includes a short summary of the EIT Health Accelerator programmes: The INCUBATE! activity line supports future entrepreneurs or scientists looking to develop start-ups or receive innovation training and assistance. These include activities such as the EIT Health Bootcamp programmes that help entrepreneurs develop and validate their business idea.

EIT Health Bootcamps: 5 Programmes offered in 2019! Who can apply: Post-docs, Master’s students, graduates, scientists, doctors and other

professionals working on ideas in Medtech, Biotech, Digital Health, Healthtech, scalable eHealth and diagnostics.

Applicants: All over Europe Deadline: Application Wave 1: January 11th to March 13th (3 camps available)

A Summary of the 5 Bootcamp Programmes:

CRAASH Barcelona is a 12-week programme that helps European research teams (of up to three participants) to launch successful device, diagnostic and Digital Health innovations that improve health and patient care. Teams move research to market through onsite and online mentoring with experts from CIMIT (Boston) – the most experienced health accelerator in the world. 1st Wave. Contact: Raquel Riera ([email protected]) EIT Health Bootcamp @Delft is a unique two-month pressure cooker that allows aspiring entrepreneurs from all over Europe to discover the business potential of their Medtech

The interdisciplinary focus of the Central Institute of Medical Engineering (ZiMT/FAU) and its broad network of health industry experts, healthcare practitioners, and digitisation research groups will allow the Medtech Bootcamp to provide focused support and matchmaking alongside the EIT Health Mentoring and Coaching Network (MCN). 2nd Wave. Contact: Heike Leutheuser ([email protected]) Trinity Digital Health Validator is a two-month Digital Health incubator hosted in Trinity College Dublin – Europe’s highest-ranked university for producing entrepreneurs (Pitchbook, 2017). The programme empowers Digital Health entrepreneurs to validate the technology and market potential of their early-stage business. 1st Wave. It is a unique programme consisting of a distance learning module and a Hackathon Cruise in the Baltic region to validate, develop and launch products in the European market. The VALIDATE! activity line places emphasis on validating products and services. Our network of living labs and test beds provides entrepreneurs with the means to test products throughout the value chain. Other activities allow entrepreneurs to gain understanding in local and regional regulatory and reimbursement schemes and provide access to market experts.

The Living Labs and Test Beds programme offers entrepreneurs access to the services of a network of living labs and/or test beds, which can support the innovation process throughout the different phases of the value chain (ideation, co-creation, validation and scale-up). The final goal is to enhance the conception of fully market-ready products with high added value and a high probability of success. Who can apply: Registered European start-ups and SMEs that want to test and improve their product. Headstart offers funding and support to emerging companies and SMEs aiming to develop new products and services and thereby shorten time to market. The purpose of the programme is to accelerate market entry and create new economic activity. The maximum funding granted is €50,000. Who can apply: Start-ups and SMEs from all over Europe, with regional selection. Deadline: March 27th, 2019. SCALE! activities focus on more mature start-ups and SMEs, to facilitate access to tools and networks for financing and market expansion. The European Health Catapult programme prepares promising ventures for investment by offering individualised mentoring and refreshing pitching skills. Our internationaliation programmes, like GoGlobal, support European ventures so that they can expand beyond Europe’s borders to the US, China, Korea, Japan, Israel and Canada. The Investor Network and the Crowdfunding Platform round out the Accelerator portfolio.

BRIDGEHEAD allows European startups and scale-ups individualised internationalisation support. It provides entrepreneurs who are active in the health domain support for soft-landings and facilitates their cross-border mobility and market entry beyond the home market. It also offers mentoring, services, resources and office space to start-ups that need them. Who can apply: Digital Health companies (eHealth, mHealth, Clinical decision support, Big

European Health Catapult is an individualized training programme that boosts the development and publicity of top-notch European health start-ups. The programme exposes Biotech, Medtech and Digital Health start-ups to high-quality experts, health industry leaders and international investors through intensive and multi-channel involvement of the whole EIT Health community. The programme is organised as a competition, with the finalists pitching at our Summit. Who can apply: Already incorporated micro- and small enterprises (<50 employees), spin-

offs from all over the EIT Health community that are active in the fields of MedTech, BioTech and Digital Health, operating in an EU Country. Participants should also be available to travel to the EIT Health Summit in Paris in December 2019 for the finals.

Investor Network addresses the issue of early-to-late-development stage fundraising across Europe to conquer health markets faster and more effectively. This is a European network which connects health-oriented investors and promising start-ups through cross-border financing and co-investments, making it the first pan-European, EU-driven network solely focused on financing health innovation. Who can apply: Start-ups seeking funding from €500k to more than €30m. Deadline: Ongoing, with quarterly cut-off dates for evaluation. It consists of four complementary programmes addressing different regions. Medtech, Biotech and Digital Health programs are available. We ask for all entrepreneurs and teams to commit to participating fully in any EIT Health programme. If full participation and commitment cannot be guaranteed an agreement must be made in advance with the activity lead. Innostars countries include Croatia, Hungary, Italy, Poland, Portugal and Wales. They will also accept countries from the RIS-Region which currently include: Czech Republic, Greece, Lithuania, Slovakia, Malta, Bulgaria, Cyprus and Romania. Each year more countries are added. Applicants from Austria are encouraged to contact the Germany/Switzerland node. Applicants from Israel are encouraged to contact the Belgium/Netherlands node. Funding: EIT Health can award a maximum of €50,000 in grants per start-up per year. This maximum refers to grants awarded as part of Headstart, prize money distributed within an EIT Health Accelerator programme, and reimbursements for travel and accommodation when invited to participate at an EIT Health event. This maximum does not include the commercial value of an activity. Promotion and Branding Start-ups supported by EIT Health agree to the EIT Health branding. Start-ups participating in Accelerator activities agree to use the “Accelerated by EIT Health” logo and display it in their partnership page. Start-ups agree to mention EIT Health in its press releases as a partner whenever appropriate. EIT Health supports start-ups participating in EIT Health programmes by helping to promote their “Success Stories” on the EIT Health webpage. To mark special achievements, EIT Health is willing to support by sharing the start-ups social media posts, publishing interviews, or writing other related articles on a case-by-case basis. How to join activities in the INCUBATE! Activity Line

In the INCUBATE! Activity Line, innovation training and support activities like ValidationLab and other Bootcamp programmes help entrepreneurs to create a business plan out of an initial business idea within a two-month programme. Furthermore, local training activities are organised to augment existing programmes at CLCs, with a focus on key skills in the healthcare sector.

.4 EIT Health Bootcamps In 2019, five Bootcamps and one Bootcamp Plus programme will provide intensive incubation programmes over a period of 2-3 months. The programmes are suitable for European teams that have the ambition to become entrepreneurs and explore the opportunities of their health business idea. The programmes help them to design and validate their business model and discover its market potential, competition, USPs and target customers. The Bootcamp programme targets teams of MSc, MDs and PhD students and/or Postdocs, and professionals who have a business idea for a product still in the research and development stage. The programme only enlists teams with at least two members. The commercial value of these programmes is an estimated €15,000, and no equity is asked for in return. What we ask from teams: ● A team of at least two people ● Ambition, drive and commitment to fulfil a dream and build a leading company around an

innovative idea with a potentially scalable business model ● Attendance at all sessions and workshops for the duration of the Bootcamp ● Willingness to interview at least 100 stakeholders about a business idea ● The ideal team profile features a combination of skills, such as business-lead and product-

development-lead ● Selection of teams is based on the quality of the business idea, their fit for the programme

and the team’s motivation and level of commitment Important dates: Applications will be accepted in two waves:

programmes. The committee will include diverse experts from each Bootcamp. ● Applicants may only choose one Bootcamp to attend ● Applicants must commit to the program attendance expectations

What we offer: If chosen for an EIT Health Bootcamp, you will receive training with a commercial value equivalent to approximately €15,000. Additionally, each programme includes financial grants to help support you in travel and other associated costs incurred during the programme. Your programme will also support funding for a field trip – an opportunity to pitch your idea across Europe. The funding is allocated by the specific Bootcamp and is intended to support 2-3 team members; however, the funding is not intended to be all-inclusive. Generally, a Bootcamp accepts 10 to 15 teams within one programme.

A. EIT Health Bootcamp: CRAASH Barcelona

➢ Submission Deadline: First Wave, March 13th 2019 Pitch CRAASH Barcelona is a 12-week programme over a period of six months designed to help European HealthTech research teams launch successful device, diagnostic and Digital Health innovations that improve health and patient care. Project teams move from research to market through mentoring with experts from Europe, and from CIMIT in Boston, USA – the most experienced health business accelerator in the world. CRAASH Barcelona is an EIT Health Bootcamp organised by Biocat in collaboration with EIT Health and CIMIT. Is it for me? CRAASH accepts teams in the health-tech and medical technology sector, including: ● Diagnostics ● Devices ● Digital Health projects for disease analysis or detection ● Delivery of health and healthcare ● Digital Health solutions within mobile health (mHealth) ● Electronic Health Records (I) ● Health information technology (IT) ● Wearable devices ● Telehealth and telemedicine ● Big data ● Social media ● Personalised medicine. Research projects that will not be accepted include drug development projects that specialise in developing compounds that deliver or improve the delivery of medicines to targeted areas in the body.

CRAASH supports research projects and soon-to-be incorporated or already incorporated start-ups at a minimum development stage of TRL 3 or TRL 4, and with a proof of concept or proof of feasibility. The Journey: This 12-week training programme (over a period of six months) will include on-site and off-site sessions in both Barcelona and Boston. Eight teams will have a kick-off week in Barcelona, after which they will be coached over a period of two months via eight webinars held every Tuesday from 16:00-18:00 CET. After the webinars, selected teams will visit other countries to validate their business concept in partner organisations in France (Medicen), The Netherlands (Yes!Delft), and the finalists will travel to Boston by the hand of CIMIT. The Programme CRAASH Barcelona is a 12-week programme over a period of six months that helps European HealthTech research teams launch successful device, diagnostic and Digital Health innovations that improve health and patient care. Project teams move from research to market through mentoring with both European and US experts from CIMIT in Boston – the most experienced health business accelerator in the world. CRAASH Barcelona is an EIT Health Bootcamp organised by Biocat in collaboration with EIT Health and CIMIT. The programme is divided into three main phases: Phase I: CRAASH Barcelona (Biocat and CIMIT) During this phase, teams validate their problem-solution and solution-market fit, specifically for the HealthTech market. The programme takes teams out of their comfort zone to conduct discovery interviews. Each team is assigned an experienced executive: a successful healthcare entrepreneur, commercialisation expert and investor that provides one-to-one facilitation throughout the programme. Phase II: European Market Validation (Medicen Paris and Yes!Delft) Selected teams will join for two different three-day road trips to investigate the market potential in France (Medicen Paris) and Holland (Yes!Delft), validate clinical need and verify appropriate regulatory pathways and reimbursement methods. Phase III: Boston Close Out Finalist teams will travel to Boston to pitch their deck in front of the CIMIT ecosystem and will also extend their trip to validate the market. This will be an opportunity for teams to meet different stakeholders that will help them validate or pivot the strategy defined during CRAASH Barcelona, while exploring collaborations and building their first network in Boston. Participants will be prepared to catapult their promising healthcare transforming ideas from sketch to market. Is it for me? The programme is aimed at teams of MSc, MDs, PhD students and/or Postdocs, and (young) professionals who have a business idea for a product still in research and development. Specifically, it targets technology readiness level (TRL) from around 2 (technology concept formulated) to level 5 (technology validated in relevant environment). The Journey: In this eight-week programme, the first month will focus on training. The first phase will take place at the start-up forge at UnternehmerTUM, based in Munich. Programme:

Throughout the MedTech Bootcamp, meticulously selected teams will transform their start-up ideas in medical technology into successful start-ups within an eight-week programme on business creation and validation. The first phase will take place at the start-up forge at UnternehmerTUM in Munich, where teams will be provided with a business design toolkit to develop and implement a sustainable future business plan. They will then create prototypes by applying proven methods from design and management.

In the second phase, at the FAU in Erlangen, teams will focus on validation through specific training in intellectual property, licensing, and medical product legislation. They will have access to testbeds and living labs as well as a broad clinical network provided by the entrepreneurial landscape of the Medical Valley. The Pitch The Digital Health Validator empowers Digital Health entrepreneurs to validate the technology and market potential of their early stage business. Each applying team will participate in a two-day problem-solution fit session. Fifteen teams will be selected to participate in a bootcamp based in Trinity to validate product-market fit and revenue model. The Bootcamp immerses teams in the powerful start-up ecosystem and matches them with a mentor. This programme will include a road trip to bring an international context. Is it for me? Digital Health start-ups are encouraged to apply, particularly in the two focus areas of bringing care home and value from clinical data. Connected health and health tech ideas are also welcome. The technology can be early-stage but must be beyond just the idea stage so that technological viability and market can be validated. The product solution should be scalable with the potential to be successfully marketed globally, not just in Europe. We seek start-ups with the passion to create a new healthcare future. Health is being disrupted from the outside in, and current availability of technological building blocks offer a unique potential for revolutionary innovation in health and wellness. The Journey The programme will start at the Trinity Business School in Dublin on 20 May and will run for eight weeks. The Programme: Validator is an eight-week high-intensity Bootcamp that allows 15 start-ups in Digital Health to road-test and validate their hypotheses with the help and guidance of a number of healthcare and start-up experts in Dublin. Programme: CaixaImpulse has been receiving support from EIT Health since 2017 and continues to focus on early-stage projects. The programme will award 25 projects to create and develop a valorisation plan and have access to experts and investors to generate new business opportunities. In addition to CI, “la Caixa” Banking Foundation (FBLC) will launch a new sub programme: CaixaImpulse Forward (CI-Fw). CI-Fw will be totally supported by FBLC and will award eight projects beyond CI that are in later stages of development (above TRL 4). The programme will assist projects in completing a commercialisation plan to validate their strategy and attract private investment. EIT Heath's support will allow the continuation of the line of projects specifically focused on healthy living, active ageing and improving healthcare. How to join activities in the VALIDATE! Activity Line

The VALIDATE! activity line start-ups and entrepreneurs with a variety of programmes related to validation activities. Entrepreneurs can use suitable living labs and test beds to support them in validation-related aspects during different phases of the value chain. The Mentoring and Coaching Network provides expertise within the European community and beyond. The EU Health Maps programme (run by the Campus pillar) provides access to specific knowledge, such as data biorepositories and analysis techniques, or understanding of local/regional regulatory and reimbursement schemes. The Bridgehead programme offers start-ups access to an infrastructure of Catalysers, Accelerators and Incubators all over Europe to assess the local market. VALIDATES programme provide access to a wide network of market and local experts to support your development and/or internationalisation.

The Project

The project must begin before November 2019 and the maximum duration of a project is 12 months from the date that the sub granting Agreement is signed. The funding is non-dilutive. It must be spent according to Horizon 2020 guidelines. The funding may be used for any activity necessary and relevant to reach the project’s objectives but cannot be used for pure basic research activities. The Pitch eMAPS (European Market Access for Partners) will contribute to the adoption and diffusion of innovation into healthcare systems by providing expertise and a clear understanding of how, when and who to engage in the innovation process. The programme will also provide specific knowledge about finance and reimbursements schemes of 14 European countries. How to join activities in the SCALE! activity line

The SCALE! activity line focuses heavily on developing tools and networks that can provide visibility and financing for projects and small SMEs, as well as facilitating access to potential investors such as angel networks, corporate financers and crowdfunders. Furthermore, GoGlobal programmes will support European start-ups and scale-ups in the domain of Medtech, Biotech and Digital Health so that they can expand in Europe, the United States, Brazil, China and other international markets. The European Health Catapult follows a three-stage procedure: Stage 1: Interested companies apply to participate at the regional level. The seven regional competitions will be organised based on the EIT Health regional structure. Start-up companies may only apply to one region. Companies are advised to apply to the regional office they are most likely to associate with. For instance, companies should self-identify with this region, have their company registered in this region, or have a second office in this region. Please be aware that attendance to local events in person may be required. The pre-selection of the nominated start-ups will be made by each region, based on a common set of criteria. Regions are free to define their individual selection process but are encouraged to run pitch sessions, workshops or other assessments to ensure that the quality of start-ups representing them are outstanding in an international context. by June 2019. The selected companies (42 in total, 14 per category) will be presented by their regional representatives during an informal consensus meeting. Stage 2: Centralised training and selection days (semi-finals) will be held for each of the three categories Biotech, Medtech and Digital Health. Those events will occur before October 15th, 2019. Each one of those days will have the following format:

● During a two-day semi-final, participating start-ups will be matched with mentors (experienced entrepreneurs, investors, experts in the field) to strengthen and optimise their business plan, and gain intensive pitch training to prepare their ability to perform for top-level investors.

● During a one-day expo immediately following the training and selection days, all participants will pitch to a jury and audience of subject-matter experts and investors. The top seven companies per category will be selected and invited to pitch at the EIT Health Summit 2019.

Stage 3: At the EIT Health Summit, winners will be selected, and prizes awarded by a panel of experts, industry stakeholders and investors (business angels, corporate VCs and crowd funders). Prize money and cost coverage: Stage 1: In total, 42 teams (14 per category) will be nominated from seven CLCs. This Investor Network addresses the issue of early-to-late-development stage fundraising across Europe to conquer health markets faster and better. This network connects health-oriented investors and promising start-ups through cross-border financing and co-investments, making it the first pan-European, EU-driven network solely focused on financing health innovation. Start-ups must be registered and at minimum seed stage with public grants and have money already raised to a significant level. The Programme The programme connects start-ups to investors to allow them to access funds for Seed to Series C rounds, It is a unique a networking programme that displays the start-ups funding need to a variety of investors, including private equity investors. It is also the first programme of its kind in Europe to offer a continuum of investment. Additional on-site programmes take place in Canada during the second semester. GoGlobal MedTech Exchange Accelerator The Pitch Starting with a workshop in the Nuremberg (Germany) area and concluding in autumn with a one-week immersion journey to China, this programme will give you first-hand insights about the country specifics of the healthcare market, as well as any major pitfalls and strong contacts to foster your business. The programme is a proven concept and has been running for the last three years and has many partners.

Is it for me? We are looking for start-ups and SMEs in the area of MedTech, Digital Health and life sciences. Sales and/or market readiness in your home country is required. Our Outbound Journey will be implemented through major events with our partners overseas (e.g. Sky 100 Elevator Pitch competition in Hong Kong) so you can get high visibly while you learn about your target country. constraints of SME managers. Participants benefit from a year-long e-learning tools, webinars, telcos, peer training and a roadshow to their target country. The training is demand-driven and user-friendly. Project outputs are individual market entry strategies, valuable new contacts, and a realistic evaluation of market potentials.

the BIOplus conference in Seoul) The Programme: Start.Smart.Global taps into existing successful networks and trustful business relations set up by mature cluster managers with established global networks. Building on experiences from Start.Smart.Japan (GoGlobal 2018), the project expands its scope and focuses on Japan and South Korea. Korea represents a new challenging market, where clusters can make a difference to their SME’s success. The cluster partners BioM (lead), Medicen, and Biocat bring in complementary expertise and provide excellence in SME training, offering networks in biopharma, medical devices, and e-health.

Start.Smart.Global aims to act as a best-practice service model for other clusters, contributing to the global recognition of innovative SMEs and strengthening Europe’s position in the global health sector. Building up the strength of EU innovators makes them globally competitive in the market, and attractive as partners for pharma and global R&D collaborations. Participants will become future peers, with the potential to train and positively influence regional networks and help them mature. Successful applicants will receive a prize money of 2500€ after full participation in the programme.

The Pitch The uniqueness of this programme is that every session will be hosted by a successful Medtech company with extensive experience to share. The programme targets Medtech and Digital Health companies that are searching for their first exporting market. Five sessions of two days each cover Europe, the US and China.

Is it for me? The programme targets Medtech and Digital Health companies that are hoping to identify their ideal internationalisation location. Ideally, they have launched or are about to launch their product in their home market and now are ready to start exporting within 12 months. Participating projects should be CE approved and product/services launched in home markets. Prior participation in Product Market Fit is helpful.

The Programme: The programme focuses on start-ups that are looking to identify the ideal international market for their businesses and will support you to first focus your current business offer and second explore the possibilities in US, China and Japan. The programme consists of five sessions of two days each (10 days in total). The first session focuses on challenging participants on go-to-market strategy and value proposition. Companies should also set up a clear goal for the programme, which will then be followed up. The second session focuses on the European area since this is normally the first export market for start-ups. The third session focuses on the US market. The fourth session focuses on China and Japan. The fifth and last session focuses on financing for internationalisation, exploring how to fund your export into other countries. During the second day of this session, the companies will present their plan for internationalisation to an expert panel and receive feedback that they can discuss within their

management or board. A winner will be selected by the panel based on the best elaborated plan.

The uniqueness of the programme is that every session will be hosted by a successful medtech company with lots of experience to share. The participants can ask questions and discuss important topics with the hosting company so they can expand their learning. In best cases, the hosting companies might find an interesting company among the participants that they would like to continue talking to about a potential partnership/cooperation.

The participating companies will receive an enormous amount of knowledge and experiences during the programme that they would not receive anywhere else. The best available experts will come to them during the programme. They will also get a lot of valid contacts, both from the speakers but also from the hosting Medtech companies. With the funding of EIT Health and the reimbursement of travel costs, this programme offers great value for money which is very competitive.

The Pitch The Gold Track is an intense tailor-made scaling programme that offers hands-on individual guidance to elite start-ups. Gold Track takes a global approach and provides promising start-ups and SMEs a deep dive assessment, an individualised roadmap built by their personal high-level advisor, implementation support and access to network resources and programs. This work will enable them to make advances in their internationalisation efforts. Is it for me? Start-ups in the scale-up phase that show promise of future high performance will excel in the Gold Track. Participating start-ups will be scouted and/or nominated by the local Business Creation Managers and selected by an independent panel of experts of high standing and recognisability. The Programme: The Gold Track will allow for high-potential to be supported with resources such as access to programs, mentoring and a grant to achieve immediate project goals. Start outcome-oriented advisory support for selected companies seeking growth in international markets. These start-ups will be fully assimilated into the EIT Health network. They will be allocated resources from the EIT Health portfolio, from collaborating partners and from external sources. Their one-year journey will be supervised by a senior mentor from the selection committee that will provide networking opportunities and advice and set high-level strategic goals. Sustainability vision Since 2016, the EIT Health Accelerator has offered its programmes as complimentary based on structured selection processes to determine company and merit. It has not asked for any contribution in return. In order to continue to support start-ups and the European economy, in the future, EIT Health may ask awarding companies to contribute commitment fees or share in the companies’ economic success. If EIT Health makes amendments to its current complimentary structure, participating companies will be informed in a timely manner and prior to signature.
