Report Highlights
The Austin Community College (ACC) District is the primary gateway to higher education and
training for residents in a 7,000‐square‐mile area in Central Texas. ACC is among the fastest‐
growing community colleges in the country, providing access to valuable programs and services
that change lives and benefit communities.
This report summarizes key characteristics of ACC and its nine peer institutions as reported in
The Higher Education Coordinating Board (THECB) 2018 Almanac.
General Enrollment Characteristics
In fall 2017, ACC was the 6th largest community college among the ten very largecommunity colleges in Texas (38,462 students enrolled in credit courses).
ACC serves more part‐time students (82.3%) than eight of its peer institutions in Texas,with only Lone Star College (82.5%) serving fractionally more part‐time students.
In fall 2017, 17.1% (6,578 students) of the total ACC enrollment were students enrolledin dual‐credit programs where high school students attempt one or more collegecourses for high school and college credit.
Successes
ACC’s disaggregated graduation by race/ethnicity data mirrors both the enrollment andservice area race/ethnicity breakdown. Approximately 7% of degrees are awarded toAfrican American students, mirroring the approximate 8% enrollment of AfricanAmerican students. Additionally, approximately 29% of degrees are awarded toHispanic/Latino students, which is an improvement, but slightly less than the 36%enrollment of Hispanic/Latino students.
ACC serves a larger percentage of students enrolled in technical programs (32.1%) thanits eight peer institutions in Texas, indicating that a higher number of students in theACC service area are seeking programs to prepare them for the workforce.
ACC is ranked 4th for success of Academic Program Graduates. For graduates of the2015‐16 academic year, 91.8 % are employed and/or enrolled.
ACC is ranked 7th for success of Technical Program Graduates. For graduates of the2015‐16 academic year, 86.9% are employed and/or enrolled indicating that TechnicalProgram Graduates are leaving ACC ready for the workforce.
First time in college students at ACC are entering more prepared for college. ACC hasthe 3rd lowest rate for students enrolling whose skills are considered below standards inmathematics (35.9%), the 3rd lowest rate for students whose skills are consideredbelow standards in reading (20.6%), and the 3rd lowest rate for students whose skillsare considered below standards in writing (20.1%).
ACC has the 3rd highest rate for students below reading standards successfullycompleting a college‐level reading‐related course within two years of enrollment(47.4%).

ACC also has the 2nd highest rate for students below writing standards successfullycompleting a college‐level writing‐related course within two years of enrollment(47.2%).
ACC has the 2nd lowest student‐faculty ratio (17:1) compared with its peer institutions.
Opportunities
ACC ranks 9th among its peer institutions in total number of degrees and certificatesawarded (4,287 awards).
ACC ranks 10th among its peer institutions in three‐year graduation rates for first‐timecredential‐seeking students enrolled starting in fall 2014 (8.2% full‐time, 2.9% part‐time).
ACC ranks 10th among its peer institutions in four‐year graduation rates for first‐timecredential‐seeking students enrolled starting in fall 2013 (15.4% full‐time, 6.6% part‐time). However, it should be noted that the graduation rates almost doubled for full‐time and more than doubled for part‐time students between year 3 and year 4.
ACC ranks 9th among its peer institutions for six‐year graduation rate for first time,credential‐seeking students enrolled starting in fall 2011 (27.6% full‐time, 10.0% part‐time).
ACC has the highest average credit hours attempted (104 SCH) for graduates in the2016‐2017 academic year. The institution with the lowest average attempted credit wasSouth Texas College (81 SCH).
ACC has the highest average time to complete an associate degree for graduates in the2016‐2017 academic year (5.4 years). This data, combined with both the averageattempted credits and six‐year graduation rates, is in line with the higher number ofpart‐time students enrolled at ACC.
ACC’s six‐year transfer rate for students enrolled in fall 2011 (16.8%) is ranked 9thamong its peer institutions in Texas.
ACC has the 6th highest rate for students below mathematics standards successfullycompleting a college‐level mathematics related course within two years (19.3%).
ACC has the 4th highest average tuition and fees for 30 semester credit hours among itspeers ($2,550). The highest average tuition among the 10 institutions was $3,740 (SouthTexas College), and the lowest average tuition was $1,370 (Collin County CCD).
ACC ranks 9th among its peer institutions for percent of semester credit hours taught byfull‐time faculty (51.8%).
5‐year Trend Analysis Highlights
The percentage of part‐time students has increased across the five years among thepeer institutions. The percentage of part‐time students has remained about the samefor ACC over the five years (from 80.0% in fall 2013 to 82.3% in fall 2017).
All ten institutions in the peer group appeared to have larger proportions of creditstudents receiving Pell grants in 2012, compared to later cohort years. This is consistent

with a lagged impact of the 2008 economic recession in Texas compared to the rest of the country.
All ten institutions in the peer group report increasing numbers of degrees andcertificates awarded from fiscal year FY 2013 to FY2017. ACC increased the number ofdegrees and certificates from 2,589 (FY13) to 4,287 (FY17), a 65.6% increase.
ACC has the lowest 3‐year graduation rates for first time in college, credential‐seekingstudents compared to its nine peers. This is true for both full‐time and part‐timestudents.
Six year graduation rates are similar for the ten institutions in the peer group. For full‐time first time in college credential‐seeking students, two colleges reported slightlyhigher graduation rates (Collin County averaged 37.6% across the five years, San Jacintoaveraged 37.5%). One college reported slightly lower graduation rates (Alamo averaged26.7%). ACC’s graduation rate averaged 27.6% for this group of students.
The percentage of first time in college students transferring to a four‐year institutionwithin six years has declined across the five years for nine of the ten institutions in thepeer group. The decline in percentage points ranged from 1.9 for Tarrant County CCD(25.2% for fall 2007 cohort and 23.4% for fall 2011 cohort) to 13 percentage points forACC (29.8% for fall 2007 cohort and 16.8% for fall 2011 cohort).
The percentages of academic and technical program graduates who were employed orenrolled in the fourth quarter in the year after graduation was uniformly high for all ofthe ten institutions in the peer group (85% or greater in AY16).
The number of first time in college students entering below math standard decreasedfrom 2010 to 2014 for the ten institutions in the peer group. The decrease was highestfor Alamo (54%), and lowest for Tarrant (9%). Austin decreased 34% from 2,435 for fall2010 cohort to 1,603 for fall 2014 cohort.
o The percentage of first time in college students entering below math standardwho met their TSI obligation within two years has increased for seven of the teninstitutions in the peer group between the 2010 and 2014 cohorts. The greatestincrease was at El Paso CCD (16.0 percentage points from 24.6% to 40.6%). Thehighest decrease was at Houston (40.8 percentage points from 83.5% to 42.7%).The percentage increased by 10.2 percentage points at ACC from 24.7% for fall2010 cohort to 34.9% for fall 2014 cohort.
The number of first time in college students entering below reading standard decreasedacross the cohorts from 2010 to 2014 for eight of the ten institutions in the peer group.The number of students entering below reading standard increased the most at LoneStar (85.7%, from 1,723 for fall 2010 to 3,200 for fall 2014) and declined the most atAlamo (69.3%, from 7,123 for fall 2010 to 2,187 for fall 2014). At ACC, the number ofstudents entering below reading standard decreased 13% (1,054 in 2010 and 917 in2014). ACC and Collin County CCD have the fewest students entering below readingstandard (917 and 747) for fall 2014 cohort.
o The percentage of first time in college students entering below reading standardwho met their TSI obligation within two years has increased for seven of the teninstitutions in the peer group between the 2010 and 2014 cohorts. The greatest

increase was at Alamo (18 percentage points from 44.7% for fall 2010 cohort to 62.7% for fall 2014 cohort). ACC showed a 17.5 percentage point increase from 33.5% in 2010 to 51% in 2014.
The number of first time in college students entering below writing standard decreasedacross the cohorts from 2010 to 2014 for seven of the ten institutions in the peer group.The number of students entering below writing standard decreased the least at ACC(6.8%, 961 in 2010 and 896 in 2014) and the most at Lone Star College (71.1%, 6,855 in2010 and 1,979 in 2014) across the five‐year period.
o The percentage of first time in college students entering below writing standardwho met their TSI obligation within two years has increased for 9 of the 10institutions in the peer group between the 2010 and 2014 cohorts. The greatestincrease was at El Paso (20.1 percentage points from 48.8% in 2010 to 68.9% in2014). ACC showed a 14.8 percentage point increase from 30.3% in 2010 to45.1% in 2014.
Average tuition and fees increased for the ten institutions in the peer group from FY13to FY18. The increase was greatest for El Paso CCD ($840, from $2,580 to $3,420), andleast for ACC ($87, from $2,463 to $2,550).
The percentage of SCH taught by full‐time faculty has increased for all institutionsexcept for Lone Star College and South Texas College. The largest increase was at ElPaso (10.9 percentage point increase from 60.4% in fall 2013 to 71.3% in fall 2016),while the largest decrease was at Lone Star College (21.6 percentage point decreasefrom 45.3% in fall 2013 to 23.7% in fall 2016).
The student to faculty ratio has remained steady or declined for seven institutions in thepeer group. ACC’s student to faculty ratio remained steady over the 5 years (16:1, 17:1,16:1, 17:1 and 17:1).
