Hello Everyone,

When you receive the Kibitzer it will be during the Regional in Sacramento. I hope many of you will play a day, two or three. It is at the Doubletree Hotel and so close to so many bridge players. There are many different types of games you can play in, many free lectures that can be attended and much more.

Our Sectional in May was down a little in attendance. Hospitality was done a little differently and many seemed to like the changes. Good news for many we have a new site for future Sectionals; the La Sierra Community Center in Carmichael. The facility is wonderful. Brightly lit, nicer chairs, bigger kitchen, all events will be in one area, so no one will get lost or confused as to where to play, plenty of free parking and a little closer for those players from the Bay areas. Hopefully, this will help our attendance for those of you who have opted not to play in Orangevale will now want to attend. We also have not one but two Host Hotels nearby giving a bridge rate, so please tell your out of town friends there is a place to stay. There also are many more “eateries” available within driving distance, something not available at the old site.

We did not have a Board meeting in May but will on June 11th at the Folsom Bridge Center, directly after the bridge game. Anyone interested in attending our Board meetings may do so. The Unit Game will be June 19th, Father’s Day, at the Folsom Bridge Center. I hope many of you will make plans to attend the Unit game. In our family this is a day “Dad” gets to do what he wants and it is playing bridge. Hope many of you feel the same way.

Our Unit Board members have been very active in making your Unit better. Please, if you notice them, many wear a name tag which says Unit 505 Board member, please give them a big hello and thank them for all they do. They deserve it.

Happy Summer, katherine

15 Words Allowed With only 15 words allowed during an auction and just 13 cards in each suit, bridge players have invented dozens of special bids, called conventions, to describe their strength and hand patterns. The ACBL textbooks, “Commonly Used Conventions” and “More Commonly Used Conventions” contain detailed chapters on the use of many of today’s popular treatments. More at:

ACBL.org/conventions

The ACBL, however, has added several words that alert opponents to unusual bidding: Stop — Bidders say “Stop” prior to jump-ing the bidding (such as with a weak 2 or splinter bid) to give opponents time to consider their bids. Alert — A warning to the opponents that the last call by your partner has been assigned a conventional message. Announcement — A word or phrase that directly describes the meaning of partner’s call. This is part of the Alert process and is used primarily in three cases: to describe partner’s range when opening 1NT (such as 15-17 or 16-18 high-card points); when the partnership uses a Jacoby transfer bid following an NT opening; when the partnership uses a forcing 1NT response.

Editor’s Note: I know these don’t add up to 15 . . . It’s what’s on ACBL.org! Click on the link above for descriptions of the Conventions.

Bidding slams that depend on distribution rather than HCP is one area where experts have the advantage over average players. Here is an example from a recent local club game. The auction began:

East South West North P P P 1H 1S 2H 2S 4D P ?

What would you bid with the South hand holding S-T84 H-AQ5 D-Q854 C-874? South bid 4H, reasoning that the hand had too many losers to bid more. This logic fails however to take account of North's bidding. North's 4D bid says, "I know you have only a single raise, but I am still interested in slam. I have a red 2-suiter, so bid slam if you have fitting cards and length in my suits."

South has the perfect hand, with 4 card diamond support, and all 8 HCP in hearts and diamonds. South should have bid 6D, a high percentage contract which is cold on the actual layout:

Not one of the 15 pairs that held the North and South hands bid a slam, so bidding it would have earned a top. If you look for opportunities to bid distributional slams where you can be confident that the odds of making are favorable, you will be well rewarded.

The month of May was a very quiet month for SBC. We all have thoughts of

moving to our new center. Each day brings the question: “Do you know when we are moving yet?” Albert took me over Monday, May 23rd and there really is going to be a new club. Keep in mind they are waiting for an OK from the fire department before they can move on. They were running three weeks behind on their inspections of the wiring, light-ing, and the insulation. You can see piles of already cut materials for the walls and once they get the go ahead, things are going to move pretty fast. Below are pictures that I

took.

Many have asked if there will be a library and

the answerer is YES! Here at the end of the lesson room is your new library. Yes, it will have shelves and room for all of the books you are used to.

This will be our private lesson room. Most of these walls will be

covered with white board. As you can see there will be a great deal of insulation for sound protection. There will be one glass wall. This room holds four tables and can, if needed, be used for the main game.

And this is where the kitchen will be. You are looking at the wall where there will be a sink

and TWO dishwashers. At the end will be an oven with a microwave above. Along the wall to the left will be TWO refrigerators. Also a beverage center – hot water – cold water faucet with the hot water ready for tea and the cold water very cold - coffee serving containers like you find at Starbucks. There will be plenty of cupboards below with REAL coffee/tea cups and glasses. When you are through, you can just pop them into the dishwasher. This will be just like a “home” kitchen. Joy can hardly wait for this room! And the players will enjoy it, too.

From being squeezed into this room, we will be moving to a much larger playing area. Even

though we have been able to play bridge and still enjoy some food and the company of our friends, I doubt very much that any of us will miss playing is these tight quarters.

Finally - here is the new playing area. This is one huge room that will hold 25 tables with

plenty of room to move around. There will be nice carpet that comes in squares and if a certain place gets really soiled, we can replace that square. On the back to the left where you see a wooden wall is where you hang coats. The wall you do not see in this picture will have a large amount of white boards. The rest will be a new kind of treatment that not only helps sound, but can be used for bulletin boards. You need to ask Albert what this finish is called. It will be used in areas that are not covered with windows, cupboards, or doors.

T here will be Bidding in the 21st Century lessons starting on June 11th. If you have friends

wanting to learn duplicate bridge, this is the class for them. Also there is a Review of Bidding and Play of the hand starting June 14th. For players needing to refresh their minds on bidding or playing then join Sam on Tuesday mornings. For information on these two lesson series see the flyers in this issue.

Don’t forget the Sacramento Regional starts May 31st through June 5th. We will be closed during this time. Have a great tournament! Our doors open again on June 6th.

SBC is intending to add many classes to our schedule. Teaching will be a big thing at SBC. It is our desire to have lessons of some type continuously throughout each year. I will be doing a beginning class with extras starting Sat, June 11th. See the flyer on page 11. Since all of you are most likely beyond beginning bridge, unless you just need to reinforce your skills, I would appreciate it if you could share on your Facebook page or contact your friends and perhaps help me get new members for the bridge club. Flyers will be available.

Have them call me at 916-965-7695.

Sam Sandusky is beginning a Bidding and Play of the Hand class on June 14th. See flyer on page 11. Please feel free to share this class information with friends, too. More upcoming plans include: A mini-class for our Invitational players on Mon, Wed, and Fri. This will be a short 30

minute lesson with answers to questions from the participants or on a topic the teacher feels would be helpful to the participants.

A one hour workshop on Tue and Thu or even on one of the other days, forgoing the mini- class on occasion.

More master classes. Sam Sandusky and I intend to have a mentor/mentee program and A Partnership Directory to help everyone with finding partners where available. None of this happens overnight, but it will be done as quickly as possible. Thank you all for your interest in lessons and helping SBC to grow. Without new members, bridge would slowly fade away. Any help you can offer is always appreciated!

The Saturday and Sunday afternoon games currently pay 3-4 times as many

That is possible because the directors contribute $4 per table to an ACBL-designated charity.

The California Capitol Regional Tournament is now in progress. If you are interested in competing in tournament play, grab your partner, or get a partner there at the DoubleTree Hotel, Sacramento, through June 5, 2016. You won’t have another chance for tournament play during the rest of June and July without a long drive to the Bay area or farther. Also, the next regional, the All-Western Championships in Santa Clara won’t begin until Aug. 30 2016. Have you heard about the new game in town? It seems that the Bridge Works game being held in Rocklin on Tuesdays for the last few months will be more comfortable being played in Lincoln. So beginning on June 7, 2016, the Tuesday game will be played at the Granite Springs Church at 1170 E. Joiner Pkwy, just across the street from SCLH. Registration for the day’s game begins at 11:00 am and play will start at 11:30 am. Meanwhile our club will continue to operate our usual games open to all residents of Sun City and their invited guests. Games are played in the Kilaga Springs Lodge on Wednesdays at 12:30 pm (also includes a 199er section), Fridays at 5:00 pm, and Saturdays at 12:30 pm (also includes a 299er section). Wednesday games are usually preceded by a half-hour lesson beginning at 11:45 am. The schedule for June follows:

June 1 − Panel Discussion – Laurie Vath /Doug Murphey June 8 – Director Call –Lead out of Turn – Marvin Arnold June 15 − How to Fill Out Your Convention Card, Pt.3. − Denise Morgan June 22 – Michaels Cue Bid/ Unusual 2 NT – Gayle Koedel June 29 – No Lesson – 5th Wed. Social A reminder to players: when your section goes on break, please leave the room quietly as others may still be playing.

JUNE AT FOLSOM BRIDGE CENTER

Your friendly venue for Duplicate Bridge!

Dave Willmott Some good news and some bad news. The bad: Barbara Morman announced her retirement a couple of weeks ago, see pictures of her from May 27th party. The good news: We did convince her to stay on the board and to run the Swiss Team games the last Thursday of every month, thus ensuring we will also have a caddy. Barbara likes to play bridge so she will always be available as a partner and can come in to play with 30 minutes of notice. So please give her a call if you find yourself without a partner one day.

The arrangement for directing in the future will be as follows: Al Beckner will direct on Monday, Friday and Saturday Susan Haynie will direct on Tuesday, Wednesday and Thursday (last

Thursday of the month—Barbara Morman—Swiss Team) Roz will direct the NLM and Mentor/Mentee games on Sundays Dave Willmott or Susan Haynie will direct Special event games on

Sunday We have 3 other directors who can fill in as needed. Please call the club early to arrange partnerships.

Friday, May 27, 2016—A retirement party was held with 20 full tables and lots of food. Val supplied the pulled pork, Dave the ribs and Barbara Wylie the cake. Barbara and her Husband, John were an important component of the Sacramento Bridge World 30 years ago. They were both active in the District, the Unit and the Citrus Heights Bridge Club. With the passing of her friend Jo Geissler who used to help make the lunches it has been a bit of a strain, even though we have tried to help her. So it must be comforting for her to be able to say goodbye to managing of the club, supplying the food and arranging partnerships.

The club has given her a beautiful award, perpetual free plays and a monetary gift as a token of our thanks for 33 years of service to the local bridge scene.

Katherine Ewing, Unit 505 Board President along with friends, Nellie Curdy and Val Williams joined all the players who showed up to honor Barbara!

The brilliant escutheon shadowing my life with bridge is strikingly lovely and simply perfect. I will share it proudly along with my wonderful memories. I always knew I was having a good time with a great group of competitive bridge players; and now, I’m looking forward to more times with partners and continuing the challenges for fame and glory - getting it right! Thank you for the scintillating trophy and a most enjoyable celebration at my retirement. Barbara

Mario Peter Grande, 75, died unexpectedly and peacefully on May 1, 2016 at Sutter Medical Center in Sacramento. Peter was born October 20, 1940 in La Paz, Bolivia. His parents fled Nazi Germany at a time when only Bolivia would accept Jewish refugees. The family immigrated to San Francisco when Peter was in his teens. Speaking both Spanish and German he was admitted to

prestigious Lowell High School and continued his education at San Francisco City College. He moved to Sacramento in the 60’s with the love of his life, Ron Perkins, who sadly preceded him in death many years ago. Peter had a 39 year career with Wells Fargo Bank. In addition to bank management, he was integral in the establishment of the Wells Fargo Museum in Old Sacramento. Peter was active in many organization, clubs, and civic endeavors. He loved theater, especially musicals and was a regular at B Street Theatre and Sacramento Theatre Company. Peter was an avid reader and always was ready to discuss his latest find. He was a prominent and valued member of the Sacramento chapter of the American Contract Bridge League and played in many national tournaments as well as online. He had weekly standing bridge dates with his close friends. Peter has many relatives all over the globe. The local Sacramento friendships he developed and cherished became his immediate family and loving support. Peter was a kind and generous soul who wore his heart on his sleeve. He always saw the best in everyone and wanted everyone to be their best. He will be deeply missed and leaves a hole in the hearts of everyone he touched. At Peter’s request there will be no formal memorial service. The game will benefit his choice of charity: Loaves and Fishes in Sacramento
