Kenya Connect
❖ Founded in 2002, Kenya Connect’s Mission is to engage and empower students and teachers in rural Kenya with 21st century skills
❖ We do this in a multi-pronged approach by breaking down barriers to education while providing enrichment and empowerment programs to students, teachers and parents
❖ Kenya Connect is located in rural Wamunyu, a semi arid community. Most of the parents are subsistence farmers, wood carvers and small business owners and live on less than $2.00 per day
❖ We work with 44 public primary and 11 secondary schools representing 18,000 students and 500 teachers
❖ In 2012 we built a solar powered Learning Resource Center (LRC) that has 30 computers and a library– it’s the hub of our programs
❖ Our Magic School Bus and Reading Rover Truck bring books to schools for library days and remote technology classes and also transports students to our LRC for enrichment programs
❖ Kenya Connect has a staff of 8 in Kenya with 3 interns including the Executive Director, Kenya and in the US we have an Executive Director and part-time accountant.
❖ We break down barriers to education through:Installing Water Tanks at all Partner Schools so students have clean water to drinkInstalling Hand Washing Stations with liquid soap that’s made by student health clubsProviding deworming medications at 30 partner schoolsProviding locally made Wings Poa Reusable Sanitary Pad Kits and menstrual health education programs to girl studentsInstalling composting toilets which replace unsanitary pit latrinesOffering Reproductive Health workshops for Secondary School studentsOffering a “rent-to-own” solar light program so students can read and study at their homesteads
❖ Enrichment and Empowerment Programs Include:Technology classes including basic computer skills and STEM classes
A robust library program with our team bringing books to partner schools through our library card and school library days program
Our library has over 9,000 books and close to 3,000 students have library cards
Teacher Professional Development that includes workshops on a number of topics and Professional Learning Communities (PLC) so teachers can learn from each other
Leadership programs for secondary school students
A Pen Pal program that connects students in the US with students in Kenya including art, poetry and story exchanges
So How Do We Attract and Maintain Donors?❖ We have a fabulous story to tell and we share it every day on all our social media
platforms including facebook, Instagram, and TwitterWe are able to do this by having staff taking pictures on a daily basis on the activities taking place and sharing them on Cluster, a photo sharing siteThe ED in the US posts what’s taking place in Wamunyu and also strives to celebrate our work on special days including World Hand Washing Day, The Day of the Girl Child, etc.We strive to make our photos impactful and we seek quotes by students and teachers about what they think of our programs
We Prep New and Recurring Donors for Upcoming Campaigns❖ In advance of an upcoming campaign, we begin to prep donors for the campaign
❖ We share specific stories about our work that coincide with the campaign theme to raise awareness
❖ We also send emails letting donors know about the campaign, especially if there is a match included
❖ We strive to let donors know the impact of their support and how it directly benefits our programs
Kenya Connect will highlight our Wings Poa Reusable Sanitary Pad program and other girl empowerment programs during campaigns focusing on the girl child
We Have Fun Thanking Our Donors!❖ The GlobalGiving platform makes it easy to write thank you notes. We follow best practice
and respond to donors within 24-48 hours.
❖ Each month we craft a NEW thank you note so our recurring donors receive a different thank you each month.
As we craft the notes, we highlight a different aspect of our program while tying it back to our missionWe also let the donor know how their donation is making an impact…. our hope it to make sure the donor knows that our work would not be possible without themIf the donor is a “one-time” or ”first-time” we make sure we invite them to follow us on social media and/or to visit our website to learn more
This month we’ve been highlighting our Level Up Village World Water Crisis Class that incorporates hands-on learning and digital content
We Send Monthly Donor Reports!❖ GlobalGiving’s platform to send monthly reports has been invaluable in helping us to maintain donor
relations.
❖ This year we are sending a donor report each month highlighting a different aspect of our program. We include 4-6 pictures and we incorporate quotes or short stories from our community.
❖ Since we are highlighting different aspects of our program such as literacy or technology it allows donors to see the breadth of our programs while keeping Kenya Connect on their minds
“Having beautiful picture books has opened the world of stories and art for our students. We would not have these books without Kenya Connect.” Teacher Catherine
We Send Special Thank You notes to KC Recurring Donors!❖ At the end of November/beginning of December we send our recurring
donors a special thank you for being a recurring donor
❖ If we have the donors address, we send a ”snail mail” hand written note on a Kenya Connect notecard thanking them for being a recurring donor
❖ If we do not have a ”snail mail” address, we send a special email thanking that donor for their ongoing recurring gift.

Project AppealsAn email tool for you to
segment communications to your donors!

notes
On the way! Keep an eye out in early
2020.
Let’s talk monthly donors.
$4,138,034The annual value of 9,601 monthly GlobalGiving
donors.
$35/monthOr $420/year.
So where do you start?
1 2 3
Don’t assume one-time donors will eventually make a monthly gift without prompting.
Don’t underestimate your supporters. Someone who can’t give $300 at once may be able to give $25/month.
Do’s and don’ts of a monthly giving program
Ask!
Be specific. “Will you give $25/month to ensure our classrooms are well-stocked with supplies?”
Know your audience. What is an appropriate amount of money to ask for?
Make monthly donors feel special. Can you send them special updates or unique opportunities?
Communicate the impact of a monthly gift.
Consider what you’ve learned today. Then, think back to
that donor who has supported you from the beginning.
Things might look a little different now! Your organization, your
community, the world.
Now think: How will you inspire that same loyalty from
new(er) supporters?
Share in the chat box! Send to “all panelists and attendees” so everyone can see.
Three Key Takeaways
One
Investing in a monthly donor program is worth the work.
Two Three
You already know what works. Your
current donors support you for a
reason—use those tactics!
Use tools available to you—like segmented
project appeals, custom thank you notes, and the
recurring match—to build relationships with
monthly donors.
