HATMANU, Dan

Honorary Member (since 2007)

October 31, 1926, Scobinţi, Iaşi County – December 27, 2018, Iaşi

Romanian painter and graphic artist, in the first part of his creative work, he made portraits and landscapes in a realistic-traditional manner, which he later abandoned in favour of a constructivist formula with figurative shades and humorous nuances. In 1945 he enrolled at the Institute of Fine Arts in Iasi, where his teachers were, among others, Corneliu Baba and Ion Irimescu, and which he graduated in 1950. He entered a competition following which he received the Nicolae Grigorescu Scholarship of the Romanian Academy, which consisted of a year of study in Leningrad and another year in Paris. Thus he attended the courses of the Repin Academy of Leningrad (1962-1963) and of the Free Academy in Paris, whence he continued at the International Pedagogical Institute in Sèvres (1964-1965). Contemporary with Baba and other sacred monsters of painting, Dan Hatmanu since his lifetime occupied a prominent place in the gallery of honour of Romanian culture. He made his debut in 1948, participated in many collective and group exhibitions and organised dozens of personal exhibitions in Romania and abroad. Among his most important participations in international exhibitions let us cite: the 1954 Biennial in Venice, 1958 - Prague, Sofia, Teheran, Moscow, 1959 - Budapest, Vienna, 1962 - Cairo, Athens, Paris, Ankara, Istanbul, 1974 - Tokyo, Osaka, 1975 - Skopje, Havana, 1977 - Lisbon, Prague, 1981 - Vienna, 1985 - Stuttgart, Venice, Perugia. He illustrated books by Ionel Teodoreanu, Anton Bacalbașa, Petru Prânzei and Valentin Ciucă. His works can be found in many museums in Romania, such as the Municipal Museum of Huși, the Art Museum of Iași, the Art Museum of Piatra Neamț, the Art Museum "Casa Simian" of Râmnicu Vâlcea, but also in private collections and museums worldwide: Rio de Janeiro, Valletta, Poitiers, Ciudad de Mexico, Prague, France, Italy, Israel, Greece, Germany.
