Science and EngineeringComputing

Data Science MajorDAS01V1

Some students are combining the Data Science major with the Actuarial Studies degree which contains the Statistics units STAT272 and STAT271. Unfortunately, the Statistics requirements are incompatible because STAT270 (required in Data Science) is NCCW with STAT272 and STAT271.

This request broadens the Statistics 200-level requirement for the Data Science major to include STAT271 as an option to the current STAT270, so that combining Data Science with Actuarial Studies is feasible.

Dept of Statistics, FSE Email from Gillian Heller, Head of Statistics Department

The change is supported

Hi Christophe,

We're totally in agreement with this, so are happy for Tony to go ahead and make the change.

Hi Gillian,

We have a student enrolled in a double degree BActStud and BSc Majoring in Data Science. The student has to do STAT271 for his BActStud and STAT270 for his Data Science Major. Those two units are NCCW.

We can deal with that particular student through a deeming but as it would be great to have more students like this, weshould probably streamline it.Hence the proposal is to add STAT271 to the Major in Data Science, more precisely require students to complete STAT270 orSTAT271.

Please follow-up with Tony who will be able to submit the paperwork in case we all agree it is a good idea.

Cheers,Christophe

2017 – LATE CHANGES TO THE SCHEDULES OF PROGRAMS, MAJORS, SPECIALISATIONS

Faculty: Science and Engineering

Department: Biological Sciences

Program, major or specialisation name: Bachelor of Marine Science

Handbook code:

MARS08V2

Rationale for request (academic or administrative reasons)

Since submission of program changes early in 2016, changes / shifting of unit content (by new staff and owning Departments) have impacted attainment of program learning outcomes. It would be more efficient to have these program changes made for the 2017 intake as this will reduce various forms of this program. ENVS117 now contains substantive oceans content and it is recommended to replace GEOS112 at 100-level. BIOL227 no longer has an aquatic component to the field trip and the loss of BIOL121 has resulted in no unit teaching the PLO about marine organismal diversity. So BIOL228 is being swapped with BIOL227. This ensures coverage of the relevant PLO in the absence of BIOL121. GEOS384 is being added to the 300-level option set. Failure to include this unit in the original submission was an oversight. It is the EPS equivalent of BIOL326 and provides the option of 300-level GEOS research projects.

Consultation

Evidence of consultation is required where the change involves the addition or deletion of units owned by other Departments or Faculties. The Faculty requesting a change must consult with relevant Departments and Faculties before the request for a late change is considered. Please attach evidence of consultation (eg, written documentation of support, extract of FSQC/Faculty Board meeting minutes) and indicate outcome(s) achieved.

Does the change involve any unit(s) owned by another Department/Faculty? Yes

Department/Faculty consulted

Type of evidence provided

Indicate outcome(s) achieved

EPS, ENVS, BIOL. A meeting of the convenors of the core BMarSci units at the 200 and 300-level on August 2nd, 2016. Participants included: Matthew Kosnik, Simon George, Shari Gallop, Melanie Bishop, Jane Williamson, Grant Hose, April Abbott, Leanne Armand

Shuffling some units in the degree to account of staffing changes and changes to the content of specific units. Review of program learning outcomes given changes to unit content and staffing has resulted in key gaps in meeting the PLOs. The proposed changes resolve those gaps.

2017 – LATE CHANGES TO THE SCHEDULES OF PROGRAMS, MAJORS, SPECIALISATIONS

Faculty: Science and Engineering

Department: Biological Sciences

Program, major or specialisation name: Bachelor of Medical Sciences

Handbook code: MESC08V2

Rationale for request (academic or administrative reasons) I was informed in July, after the program for 2017 had been submitted, that CBMS would not be offering CBMS335 Medical Microbiology until 2019. As the number of 300 level electives has been steadily shrinking, at the suggestion of CBMS, I wish to add CBMS331 Molecular and Medical Biotechnology to the list of 300 level electives until CBMS335 is offered again.

Dear Jenny,

Sorry for the late reply but I have been away and I needed to discuss the issue of CBMS335 with Mark.

Unfortunately, the department will not be able to offer CBMS335 in 2017 or 2018 as we do not have the staff or resources to offer theunit again until 2019.

An alternative offering for Med Sci that has some microbiology is CBMS331, Molecular and Medical biotechnology. Currently this is notan optional unit in the Med Sci program and would need to be added as an option, or allowed to be substituted.

For students who have failed 100 level chemistry CBMS101 this semester. They may be permitted to enrol in CBMS103 in semester 2 orthey can wait until 2017 and enrol in the new CBMS107 which is the prerequisite for 200 level Biochem. This should not slow theirprogress either way.

Also, I think you need tell the Med Sci students that CBMS333 has been deleted in 2017 so this semester will be the last offering.

Dear all,

Once my marking is finished, I plan to send out an email to Med Sci students telling them of the changesto units for next year so that they can plan their S2 enrolment.  I have already had enquiries aboutCBMS335, and have told students that will be offered.  Are there other changes for 2017 that I should letstudents know about now?  What should students do who have failed a 100 level Chemistry unit thissemester?  Any other things you would like me to include from CBMS for the exis ng Med Sci students?

I hope to send this out by the weekend.

Cheers

Jenny

2017 – LATE CHANGES TO THE SCHEDULES OF PROGRAMS, MAJORS, SPECIALISATIONS

Faculty: Science and Engineering Department: Computing Program, major or specialisation name: Data Science Handbook code: DAS01V2

Rationale for request (academic or administrative reasons) Some students are combining the Data Science major with the Actuarial Studies degree which contains the Statistics units STAT272 and STAT271.

Yes

Unit Description:

This unit will explore and assess the ways in which history is created, practised and consumed in public. Students design a research project andundertake practical tasks in collaboration with their convenor and external partner. They identify the best way to achieve its objectives, find the relevantresearch materials and archives, and produce a professional piece of written work that communicates their findings in the most appropriate format.Students also work with people from different backgrounds, give and receive valuable feedback that improves their work, and communicate theirfindings orally in clear and concise presentations. Students will benefit from first hand engagement with public historians and the practice of historyoutside the university. The aim is for the PACE unit to encourage Modern History majors to evaluate how their discipline specific knowledge can be usedin a variety of workplaces and to encourage students in other disciplines to engage with public history using their disciplinary expertise.

1 All units at 200 level and above are required to have a prerequisite and/or corequisite. Refer to page 5 of the Faculty guidelines: unit proposals and approvalsdocument for full requirements.2 New unit to be listed as NCCW with former unit and any other units with which the unit is co-taught.3 Units are given designations to allow them to become part of a particular program. Modern History Major

To which program-level learning outcome does this unit most contribute?

The aim is for the PACE unit to encourage Modern History majors to evaluate how their discipline specific knowledge can be used in a variety ofworkplaces and to develop their transferable skills. It will allow them to apply their knowledge of modern historiography and historical research in theproduction of a public history project. It will also encourage them to hone their written and oral communication skills in a non-academic context. Theywill also learn how to work independently, with guidance, on a large pieced of work over an extending period of time. The unit will also encouragestudents in other disciplines to engage with public history in teams using their own disciplinary knowledge and expertise.

Outline the expected learning outcomes for the unit

1. Understand key developments in modern historiography;2. Formulate research questions about the past;3. Understand the kinds of research needed to answer these questions;4. Develop a range of skills in historical research in both primary and secondary sources;5. Structure their research into a coherent argument or thesis;6. Communicate their research in a range of oral and written forms, including (but not limited to)an academic essay;7. Give and receive effective, constructive feedback on their work and the work of other students in the unit;8. Work independently on a large piece of work over an extended period of time;9. Work effectively in collaboration with others.

Demonstrate how these are aligned with the level of the unit (i.e. undergraduate/graduate/postgraduate)

Students at 300 level are expected to undertake independent historical research with guidance from their teacher. This project is carefully scaffolded todevelop their skills over the course of the semester. Learning outcomes include understanding key developments in modern historiography, learninghow to formulate research questions about the past and the development of a range of transferable skills including written and oral communication. Theunit includes an introduction and orientation component, which is undertaken during the first face-to-face seminars, and supported through the onlineunit. Scaffolding for skills and knowledge development takes place throughout the unit, both in the face-to-face seminars and weekly onlinecontributions that are designed to develop students’ research skills and result in an independent research project. students are also encouraged toreflect on their participation and learning at the end of the unit in a face to face seminar and in a written report.

Clearly outline what benefits the partnerorganisation(s) and students will gainthrough the engagement. How will theengagement assist the partner organisationto achieve their mission and purpose?

organisations, as well as businesses/consultancies and community groups across NSW. Students willbenefit from first hand engagement with public historians and the practice of history outside theuniversity. Partner organizations will benefit from students’ expertise and knowledge in theirdiscipline areas, as well as helping establish history projects for future students to engage with.

The PACE activities will help the partner organisations to achieve their mission by fosteringengagement with and a deeper understanding of the discipline of history and its contemporaryrelevance. They will help organisations with limited resources and they should also help to bring newaudiences to history. The unit is also designed to foster active citizenship beyond the university forlife-long learners.

The history and museum sector is traditionally under-resourced and so student placements canprovide museums, government institutions, research centres etc. with invaluable assistance.Students provide an on-going source of highly motivated, emerging professionals with new ideas andfresh perspectives. At a basic level the placement of students within a public history organisationprovides an opportunity to complete projects that might otherwise never be accomplished while alsofreeing up regular staff to pursue more in-depth projects. Examples of work completed by studentson placement with public history organisations include:• Designing and conducting evaluation surveys• Cataloguing• Research• Assisting with writing and design of marketing and visitor publications• Conducting grant prospect research and assisting in completing a grant application• Designing and creating educational resource material• Creating and coordinating events programming• Website development• Digital archiving.Student placements can thus contribute to an organisation's education and outreach mission throughcareer mentoring and can provide organisations with invaluable insights into their targetcommunities.

Include a statement of how the choice ofpartner and activity reflects the ethicalstandards of the professional andcommunity engagement initiative.

The choice of partners is in line with the University’s ethical framework. The proposed partnershipsand participation activities also align with the PACE initiative’s stated aim of enhancing the well-beingof people and the planet by promoting a greater understanding of history and the community.

Identify the mode of engagement of theactivity (i.e in person or remotely or acombination of both).

In person, remotely or a combination (dependent upon the needs and location of the partner)

How does the unit fulfil the Learningand Teaching criteria?

Please ensure you briefly address all therequired learning and teaching components(i.e introduction, scaffolding, activity, assessment etc.). Please refer to thecriteria.

This unit is grounded within a rigorous academic framework that has been piloted successfully as astream of the Modern History Capstone unit (MHIZ300). Learning outcomes include understandingkey developments in modern historiography, learning how to formulate research questions about thepast and the development of a range of transferable skills including written and oral communication. The unit includes an introduction and orientation component, which is undertaken during the firstface-to-face seminars, and supported through the online unit. Scaffolding for skills and knowledgedevelopment takes place throughout the unit, both in the face-to-face seminars and weekly onlinecontributions that are designed to develop students’ research skills and result in an independentresearch project.

Identify mechanisms through which studentscan reflect/document/evaluate what theyhave learned during the PACE experience.

Students will be required to submit weekly online contributions, which are designed to facilitatescaffolded reflection on unit content and the PACE activity. Their final assessment is a reflectivereport on their PACE activity and learning.

Identify how you will monitor studentsduring the activity to ensure they areachieving the learning outcomes of the unit(e.g. tutorial attendance, iLearn posts, emails) and at what points (e.g. first week, mid way, upon completion).

Students will be monitored via face-to-face seminars or via weekly iLearn posts.

Please provide a brief description of yourevaluation plan for the unit.

The unit will be evaluated using the LEP or an updated version of LEP (or replacement survey) as partof PACE R&E Framework, complemented by peer review/staff and partner evaluation.

Describe the distribution of student workload for this unitTotal unit workload should be equivalent to 150 hours per 3cp: Academic Senate, 12/11/13. At least 50% of the total workload of the unit should bespent on the PACE components (ie, orientation, scaffolding, PACE activity, assessment, reflection and debrief), with a minimum of 20% of theworkload spent on the experiential component (i.e. the PACE activity). In the case of a 3cp unit, the minimum 30 hours of experience should involveat least 18 hours of two-way interaction between students and the partner organisation and/or the community it serves. (See criteria, 'MinimumHours').

Learning Outcomes

How does this unit contribute to the learningoutcomes of the program of study (whereapplicable)?

The aim is for the PACE unit to encourage modern history majors to evaluate how their disciplinespecific knowledge can be used in a variety of workplaces. It will allow them to apply their knowledgeof modern historiography and historical research in the production of a public history project. It willalso encourage them to hone their written and oral communication skills in a non-academic context. They will also learn how to work independently, with guidance, on a large pieced of work over anextending period of time. The unit will also encourage students in other disciplines to engage with thecreation of public history using their disciplinary expertise.

Which of the following graduate capabilities are developed in this unit?

Cognitive Capabilities (at least two)

Discipline Specific Knowledge and Skills Yes

Critical analytical and integrative thinking Yes

Problem solving and research capability Yes

Creativity and Innovation Yes

Interpersonal and Social Capabilities (at least two)

Effective Communication Yes

Student Engagement as ethical local and global citizens Yes

Student engagement as socially and environmentally active and responsible citizens Yes

Personal Capabilities (at least one)

Professional and personal judgement and initiative Yes

Commitment to continuous learning Yes

Provide brief supporting comments for the capabilities you have indicatedThe cognitive capacities of students will be developed as students work onand complete their individual and group research projects. Their personal and social capabilities will be honed when liaising with externalorganisations because students will need to make careful personal judgements about how they produce and practice history in the ‘real world’ withdiverse communities. They will need to learn how to present themselves and their ideas carefully and sensitively. They will learn how to use theirknowledge and awareness of the particular community with whom they are engaging as they practice public history. Students will learn how tocommunicate effectively in a range of different formats.
