Here at The American University in

Cairo, we take academic integrity

very seriously. We set a high

standard for ourselves and for each

other to conduct ourselves with

honesty and responsibility. Fostering

such behavior is both an individual

obligation of each member of the

University to himself and his

community, and a collective

undertaking of the institution.

To that end, the University has

developed the Code of Academic

Ethics described in this booklet.

We invite you to read the code,

take time to understand and reflect

on it, and to sign the pledge to

uphold its principles.

Welcome to The American University in Cairo, where academic integrity matters.

President Lisa Anderson

Academic Integrity

Academic integrity is a commitment, evenin the face of adversity, to five fundamentalvalues: honesty, trust, fairness, respectand responsibility. From these valuesflow principles of behavior that enableacademic communities to translate idealsinto action. All activities at The American

University in Cairo, from teaching toadministrative and support functions, servethe process of learning. Together, theUniversity’s faculty, staff and students forma cohesive academic community that sharesthe Code of Academic Ethics outlined inthis document.

Statement of Intent

The American University in Cairoaffirms its commitment to the guidingprinciples of academic integrity.

Academic integrity matters. It isimportant not just for an institution ofhigher education and the members ofthat community, but has an impact onhow the institution is perceived bysociety and how it trains its futurecitizens and leaders of society, as well asthe global community. The AmericanUniversity in Cairo’s faculty, students, administrators and staff are committed tothe highest standards of academicintegrity throughout the University.

Statement of Values

The American University in Cairoencompasses a community of scholarsand students who are engaged in theenterprise of learning and are supportedin this process by administrators and staff. The process of learning requires an openexchange of ideas between scholars andstudents, and can only be based on trust

in each other. This trust does notnecessarily come naturally to everyoneengaged in the learning process, andfaculty, students and staff need toconstantly re-establish and confirm it. Itallows participants in the academiccommunity to feel that their ideas willbe respected, discussed and evaluated inan atmosphere free of prejudice and bias.It also makes a moral demand on everyparticipant in the academic community:that the ideas which they have expressedverbally, in writing, in papers, books andlectures are their own, or that if they aresomeone else’s, they be honestly andclearly acknowledged.By committing ourselves to the

highest standards of academic integrity atAUC, we also reaffirm our commitmentto the larger communities of Egypt andthe world so that it can be said that theentire AUC community is respected forits honesty and integrity.

In order to cultivate such acommunity founded on trust, academicintegrity and social responsibility, AUCneeds to: • Promote an atmosphere of academicintegrity by constantly reaffirming itsvalue in all the forums of interaction atthe University, involving students, faculty, administrators, staff and parents.

• Clarify the responsibilities of eachmember of that community.

• Promote an understanding of theseriousness of violating the principlesof academic integrity as a violation ofthe AUC community.

• Make it clear that violations ofacademic integrity will not betolerated, and that the punishmentfor such infractions will beappropriate to the act committed.

• Clarify exactly what constitutes aviolation of academic integrity.

The sacredness of a community based ontrust and social responsibility is reflected incultures and religions:

“Whoever cheats us is not one of us.” (Saying of the Prophet Muhammad)

“Whoever can be trusted with very little canalso be trusted with much, and whoever isdishonest with very little will also be dishonestwith much.”

(From the Bible - Luke 16:10).

The Ethics of AcademicIntegrity

Academic integrity is a part of our ethicalstance in life. Our conduct in an academicsetting at AUC can foster an atmosphereof truthfulness and trust; or foster doubtand suspicion, and a desire for success atany cost, even personal integrity. TheAUC Code of Academic Ethics remindsmembers of AUC of their commitmentnot only to their own personal integrity, but to that of the entire Universitycommunity, their countries and the world. The implications of that commitment are:

Personal Ethics

We learn early in life that ethical peopletell the truth and keep promises, and thatlying, cheating or stealing are

dishonorable. We know, however, thateveryone can be tempted, and that thefear of failure and the prospect of comfortor future success can lead us to betrayprinciples of truth, honesty and integrity. We also know that social pressures, pleasures or personal problems cancompromise our values. Thoughtless actscan cost us our integrity. Codes and promises cannot change

who we are, but adherence to them canhelp to ensure every decision we make isone that upholds those values. Conscienceand character are shaped and maintained bydecisions and actions. Clear commitmentsregularly reaffirmed keep the need forethical behavior present in our minds.Honesty, integrity and truth are not justvalues; they are decisions that we make andmust continue to make despite temptationand the lure of the “easy way out.”

Social Responsibility

The Code of Academic Ethics emphasizesthat students, faculty, administrators andstaff are citizens at AUC, and that civicresponsibility here, as anywhere, meansgoing beyond a purely personal concernfor ethical behavior. The commitment toethical conduct at AUC is not just anindividual matter, but a social contract; aconsensus in support of academic honestyis the minimum requirement foraccomplishing the aims we share. So the Code of Academic Ethics requiresopposing what we know is wrong. This

may mean, for example, speaking outagainst plagiarized papers or prohibitedcooperation, advising an instructor not toreuse an earlier year’s exam, or advising acolleague not to take advantage of theUniversity’s resources for personal use. Itsurely means considering dishonestyopenly and talking about it with others, informally or in class.

Awareness

There are instructors unaware of cheatingin their classes, and there are courses sooversubscribed and understaffed thatadequate evaluation is difficult and theresultant temptation to cheat is high. Itcould be that University policies, procedures and services are not appliedconsistently by certain administrativeofficers. Better information about suchincidents will help faculty, deans, studentsand administrative officers reduce theopportunities for dishonesty, and willidentify patterns that urgently requirecorrective action. The community as a whole needs to

be more alert to whatever problemsexist. If members of the AUCcommunity tell the appropriate personresponsible when cheating or a policyinfringement is occurring, then all of uscan know how widespread the problemsare and whether they are getting worseor better. This knowledge is essential ifwe are serious about trying to achieve amore honest community.

Directness

The Code of Academic Ethics chargesmembers of the AUC community to relyon their conscience to communicatedirectly with anyone they have strongreason to believe has acted dishonestly. This is the most demanding requirementof the code; yet it also holds the greatestpromise of promoting academic integrityacross the whole University. What one should say to dishonest

friends, classmates or colleagues is notprescribed by the code. When improperconduct is identified in this way, violatorswill know that they have been observedand that to continue will result in seriousrepercussions — knowledge that, by itself, could effect immediate constructive change. The requirement to confront others

about their acts of dishonesty may triggerviolators to re-evaluate their decisions. Not every person will feel comfortablewith confronting a fellow member ofAUC, whether he or she is a student, administrator, or faculty or staff member, about academic and professionalmisconduct. However, consider thatcorporations, government agencies andsmall businesses all depend on thewillingness of their people to recognizeand take a stand against all breaches inethical conduct. Employees who do notconfront wrongdoing within theirorganizations tacitly condone behaviorthat could ultimately compromise theirown positions and security.

Choice

The Code of Academic Ethics emphasizesthe choice that witnesses to violationsalways face — whether to inform theappropriate authorities. To weigh thatchoice means to think about the costs ofdishonesty both to individuals and to themorale of the community. It means, aswell, to think about individuals who lie, cheat or steal, and whether facingdisciplinary action might help them cometo terms with what they are doing. There are never good reasons for

ignoring dishonest acts and the harm theydo to an educational institution.Communicating directly to those who actdishonorably will sometimes be sufficient. But there will be times when consciencerequires you to do more.

The soul is dyed the color of its thoughts. Think only those things

that are in line with your principles and can bear the full light of

day. The content of your character is your choice. Day by day,

what you choose, what you think, and what you do is who you

become. Your integrity is your destiny . . . It is the light that

guides your way.

States are not moral agents, people are, and can impose moral

standards on powerful institutions.

Noam Chomsky

Try not to become a man of success, but rather a man of value.

Albert Einstein

On matters of style, swim with the current; on matters of principle,

stand like a rock.
