TRINITY COLLEGE ROME CAMPUSCommitted to urban, place-based learning, the Trinity College Rome Campus offers students the opportunity to spend a semester or full year of study in a dynamic European cityscape. Established in 1970, the Rome Campus is based on the Aventine Hill, the southernmost of Rome’s seven hills. The neighborhood is elegant and residential, surrounded by ancient churches, monasteries, and spectacular views. The program is designed to immerse students in language and culture, combining academic rigor with hands-on, real-world learning. Students are challenged by renowned faculty inside and outside the classroom and are encouraged to adopt the city of Rome as their laboratory. Ancient and contemporary history, politics, art, culture, language, literature, and the economy come alive through regular academic excursions and city-based research projects.

The Rome Campus welcomes approximately 50 participants per semester, drawn from Trinity and other top U.S. colleges and universities. Visiting students have been an essential part of the program since its inception.

ACADEMICSThe Trinity College Rome Campus offers a broad liberal arts curriculum with courses taught in a wide range of disciplines. As much as possible, all courses make use of the resources of Rome and of what can be seen and experienced directly:

The City as a ClassroomCourses are designed with an experiential component in the city at large and present students with the opportunity to become immersed in their host city through site visits, walking tours, and academic excursions throughout Rome and Italy.

Liberal Arts Courses in EnglishAll courses are taught in English, except for those in Italian language and literature. Subject areas include art history, economics, classics, history, international relations, social sciences, political sciences, psychology, and more.

Small Class SizesCourses are deliberately small, with usually no more than 15 students per class. Classmates are North American students from the nation’s most prestigious colleges and universities.Language RequirementAll students must enroll in an Italian language course at appropriate levels. Students also may study Greek and Latin.

World-Class FacultyCourses are taught by faculty and adjunct professors of the Trinity College Rome Campus and are approved as a regular part of Trinity’s undergraduate curriculum. Visiting faculty from Trinity College in Hartford, Connecticut, also may teach on the program.

Ease of Credit Transfer Trinity College in Hartford, Connecticut, issues transcripts for all courses taught at the Rome Campus. Most institutions accept Trinity College Rome Campus courses for transfer credit; visiting students should arrange this in advance of the program.

WHERE YOU WILL LIVE AND STUDYAventine HillLocated in the heart of Rome just steps from the Coliseum and Circus Maximus, the Trinity College Rome Campus is situated atop the Aventine Hill, one of the famed Seven Hills of Ancient Rome. The Rome Campus offers students unparalleled access to a variety of historic sites, as well as cosmopolitan and lively neighborhoods. Despite its proximity to sublime monuments, beautiful piazzas, and busy markets, the Rome Campus’s location among the peaceful gardens and villas of the Aventine offer students an oasis amid the hustle and bustle of modern Rome.

Campus FacilitiesThe Rome Campus is a shared space and continues to function as a working convent. HousingThe Rome Campus offers two housing options: • On-campus at the convent: single rooms with private bathrooms en suite • Off-campus at a hotel (a five-minute walk from campus): double-occupancy rooms with private bathrooms en suite

MealsAll students receive 14 meals per week: • Breakfast and lunch Monday through Friday are servedfamily style in the dining hall on campus. • Students receive meal coupons for four dinners, redeemable at several local restaurants, each week.

ACADEMIC LEADERSHIPOn -Site director Stephen Marth has extensive knowledge and experience in the field of international education and Italian studies which hehasacquiredoverthelast two decades. Motivatedbythedesireto have an immersive cultural exchange

experience in Italy, he first moved there to teach English in private and public schools afterfinishinghisB.A.inarthistoryatthe UniversityofGeorgia.HeholdsaPh.D.in ItalianStudiesfromBrownUniversityand aM.A.inItalianfromMiddleburyCollege. Stephen’sresearchandteachinginterests include twentieth century Italian visual arts and literature, and in particular Italian Futurism. He is currently researching the intersection between Futurism and popular science at the turn of the century.

STUDY TRAVELAcademic excursions are an integral part of the Trinity College Rome Campus curriculum, bringing students in direct contact with the people, landscape, history, and civilization of Italy. The Rome Campus is committed to helping students explore Italy’s must-see locations during the program.

STUDENT EXPERIENCEInternship ProgramThe Trinity College Rome Campus offers the opportunity to take part in hands-on, experiential learning through internships in a mix of settings throughout Rome, including museums, human rights organization, schools, government, and nonprofits. • Internships are available to students at all levels of Italian language; students are placed according to language level. • Internships are unpaid and earn academic credit; they are taken in conjunction with a seminar about Italian workplace culture (1 Trinity credit = 4 semester hours). • Unless otherwise noted, internships require a minimum weekly commitment of eight hours (generally spread over two to three days).

Group ExcursionsEach semester, all Trinity College Rome Campus students participate in one overnight group excursion: • Southern Italy: Capri, Naples, and Pompeii (fall only) • Venice and Adriatic Islands (spring only)

Course-based ExcursionsIn addition to the group excursion offered to all partic-ipants each semester, Trinity College Rome Campus students have the opportunity to participate in a wide variety of course-based academic excursions including: • Florence • Lombardy and Lake Garda • Ravenna • Torino
