Research notable contribution to knowledge in the field: Major contributions are in the fields of Proteomics, Cancer Biology, Antioxidants, Chinese Medicine, Dietary Lipids and Cancer, Nutrition and Immunology.

(i) Research and development with proteomic technology for biomarkers discovery:My significant contribution goes to environmental research in the discovery of novel proteins as “biomarkers of toxicity” by proteomic and monoclonal antibodies technology. We have identified the “biomarkers of toxicity” of harmful algal bloom, which is a series matter for marine toxicology for human food. We are presently purifying the antibody raised against T1 to differentiate specifically the toxic algae from the non-toxic algae.

(ii) Chinese Medicine Research in Cancer Biology:We were the first to publish the detailed anticancer mechanisms of polysaccharide peptide (PSP), an extract of the Chinese Medicinal mushroom Yun zhi (Coriolus versicolor, spp). Flow cytometry and cDNA arrays technology were used to identify the cell cycle kinetics, cell death and apoptotic pathways in which PSP exhibits its treatment effect on human leukemia. PSP is currently used in China as adjuvant therapy. Our data show that PSP does not exert cytotoxic effect on normal healthy human cells thus further supports its potential development as chemotherapeutic drug in the west. An RGC grant ($736,000) was received in 2003.

(iii) Dietary Lipids and Cancer Research: During earlier research success (at the Harvard Medical School, USA and later HKU), I have made significant contributions to the relationship of dietary lipids and breast cancer. Detailed anticancer mechanisms (cell proliferation and cell death) on how omega-3 fish oil can retard breast cancer growth have been published. Mathematical models have been developed by us to express the mechanistic influence of the omega-3 and omega-6 fatty acids on cancer cells progression through the Go/G1 phase, DNA S phase, and G2/M mitotic phase of the cell cycle.

(v) Nutrition, Immunity, and Inflammation Research: Nutrition and Immunity is closely linked. My earlier published nutritional papers receive increasing citations (over 40 citations in this area in some). Significant contributions in the areas: (i) Specific nutrients for hospital nutrition, (ii) oxidative stress and dietary antioxidant (ii) lipids and immune function as well as (iii) shock and burn and (iv) nutrition and cytokines.

(vi) Natural products and antiagingNatural compounds from food and Chinese Medicine can prevent aging through at least the free radical and oxidative stress pathway. We are
